Well, I have been following this thread for well over a year now, but I don't think I have ever said anything yet...
Great setup you have there. It is awsome that people like you are willing to spend the time, energy, and money to propagate corals. This will only help to strenghten the hobby and for that, I thank you.

This quote is from way back on page 20, but is "iron bacteria" the same thing as "bacterial iron?" Our well in Florida produces water with the same rust-colored crud that you were dealing with. The University of Florida tested it and said it was bacterial iron. They also told us about the filtration options, which were...nothing. It clogs RO/DI and other particulate filters too fast to be removed that way (exactly like you were experiencing). It looks like this unit may be the answer. Can anybody shed more light on this?

I don't know if they are the same thing or not. As far as I understand, iron bacteria is bacterium that lives deep down in the earth where the water comes from. It uses the iron as a nutrient source. As it multiplies, it forms the clumpy gooey muck that you saw in my sink back on that page.
Just as a semi-educated guess, I would say they mean basically the same thing. To my ear, "bacterial iron" sounds like it would refer to the iron itself, but likely after the bacteria process it. Whereas "iron bacteria" would refer to the bacteria that processes the iron. (all speculatioin on my part).
In any event, I am satisfied with the system I have set up which appears in that link. For me, it was worth the investement.
The issue for my water was that most of the iron is dissolved, the particulate filterrs won't catch it unless/until it is oxidized into rust. Appearantly, the particulate filters will catch the bacteria along with any iron they have processed. Like you stated, all of the iron, in any form, will plug up an RO membrane. Even the dissolved iron gets trapped on the surface of the membrane, rusts, and clogs the pores in the membrane.
That filter is a two tank system. The first tank oxidizes the iron, which turns it to rust, along with being under pressure and elevating the pH (both of which accelearate the oxidation process). The second tank has several different types of media to filter out the rust. It flushes automatically. I can set the system to flush whenever I want it to. The time can be set, as well as being able to set how many days out of a 12 day cycle it flushes. It trully has been a "set it and forget it" system.

I believe what we have in FL is iron oxide. It is soluble until it hits O2 which makes it an oxide. It may be the same thing as bacterial iron/iron bacteria because that is the way to get rid of it here. Another way is to pump it into a open top tank and let it settle. The iron sttles out and you pump from the mid level to leave the iron residue.
The filter you bought may not work for irrigation which is what I need it for due to the high volume.

echoplex- that was very thoughtful of you to take your own time to assemble that index. it is all very organized. simply amazing and i really appreciate it, as i'm sure others will too.
Rick ....Wow!!! just finished reading your thread and have to say you are very dedicated . Thanks for not giving up and hope you succeed in making a profit. In the future Apiculture may be the hobbyist only choice in purchasing corals and fish. I myself would prefer apiculture over wild collected. When do you think you will begin selling and will it be mostly mail order from a website?( are you not aloud to say here on RC if so ignore that question) I'm a few hours north and would love to come down a check out the GH and make some purchases when my 120g Is finished.
