Let's Count the Broken RIOs

rio = 0
rainbow lifeguard quiet one = 1

still have 3 rio's going strong after 4 years. but I think they are best used for non critical areas. waterflow ect. still wouldn't use it for a sump pump or anything..

ReefMon, very nasty pic. I feel like paying someone to blow that picture up to billboard proportions and putting it on a billboard outside of the TAAM/Rio headquarters. Maybe after awhile of looking at it every day they might decide to start making a better quality pump. Then again, maybe they won't...

1/1 Rio 2100 in sump blew up and fouled tank
0/5 maxijet and 402/302s

don't mind if a pump goes every once and a while, but when one
ruins my tank I'll say there's something wrong. Won't ever buy
Rio again.

So has anyone sent a link to this thread over to TAAM (makers of the RIO) I want to know what they think about all of this.

1 rio 800 that makes tons of noise and won't start back after you plug it in unless you shake the darn thing.

I had to replace it with another rio 800 because nothing else fits in the overflow box that came with my Remora Skimmer.

i've had several 800's stop working after 2 years or so of service (driving a bakpak). i don't consider that too bad, though my hagans and maxi-jets are all going strong after 5 years.

i did have a 2100 explode in my tank. i was using it for in-tank circulation. one night i heard a bang from the other room, looked around and didn't see anything. figured the cat did something. *a few days later* i was moving stuff around in the tank and noticed a piece of plastic the size of a 50 cent piece. it had been blown off the end of the pump and across the tank. i quickly extracted my hands from the water and unplugged everything. pulled the pump out and it was all burned up with exposed copper wires. nothing tripped, and as far as i could tell it was still live. everything was fine though, no short or long term problems that i could notice.

Funny stuff Pseudo Boy!

Ok, let's see...2 Rio 600's, 3 or 4-1700's, at least 4-2100's and 2-2500!
I have had great life out of the 3100's though...a solid pump.

Most of these were the "older" pumps (some dying as quickly as two weeks) before Rio claimed to have made some fixes but the fixes were less then adequate cause the #%@! is the same. No buy no mo!

Forget anything from Otto! Hagen's 802's are everlasting. I have one that is more than 8 yrs old with little maintenance. Good success with Quite One's on circulation only.

I had a 2500 that was in my 50 gal reef when I was just starting out and somehow managed to short out the breaker while I was away. came home to 20 gal of water on the floor and lots of dead dried up coral

2 Rio 2100's. One dang near fried me!, Nothing like looking in your sump and seeing smoke rising from the water!

Thank goodness I read as many threads as I could before buying my hardware. I have 6 maxijets (4 on a wavemaker) and never had one problem. Just glad I read about Rio's beforehand.

Two Rios

Two Rios

I had a 3100 and a 2100 fail! No melt downs but really nasty electrical shocks. My 1700 is still going after 1 year but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I spoke with the owner of my LFS about the RIO dilemma. He apparently knows the owner of TAAM pretty well. He's told me that the owner knows that rio meltdowns have been happening and said that he really doesn't even seem to give a crap!! Now thats customer service!
