Let's discuss the price of gas and SUVs

Consumer Reports has said that most of the gas savings on a hybrid will be null and void after replacing the batteries, which needs to be done after 5 years or so.

FALSE. (kind of)

they may have said that several years ago. It is no longer true.
Hybrids are more advanced now. The honda civic hybrid comes with an 8 year warrenty on the batteries.

Comparison:
Honda Civic Hybrid Sticker: 22,600
Honda Civic EX(most of the same features): $18,710
Federal tax credit for buying a hybrid: $2,100 (from what i found)

If you compare the hybrid's gas mileage to the gasoline civic, assuming:
If gas is at $3.00 a gallon for the next 5 years
You only drive highway miles
The gasoline civic gets 40 and the hybrid gets 51
You only drive 60 miles a day.
Then the hybrid saves you $1,771.

Then you've lost $19 by buying a hybrid.
But!
Over the next 5 years we can assume gas is going to get way more expensive. The savings add up reeeal quick if gas is at $4.
Most of us drive more then 60 miles a day (the more you drive the more you save)
And they hybrid gets 49 miles to the gallon in the city compared to 30 for the gas civic. And most of us drive at least some city miles.

Not to mention the lost time it takes to stop and fill up your tank all the time. My time is worth money. and i just wasted a lot of it by making this post....

You are also making the mistake of basing your equation on the stated EPA mileage estimates. I am not sure about the Civic Hybrid, but I know of one Toyota Mech in our group (cough, Fade32, cough) who has not seen them average over 42 mpg when they come in for service.

Don't get me wrong, that is nothing to sneeze at, but when you compare that to the 30+ mpg you can get easily in a gasoline engine now... hybrid makes less sense.

then i'm comparing bad apples to bad apples.

i get better then EPA mileage estimates in my 03 civic.

my uncle had one of the first waves of priuses (i'm not sure how to pluralize that word...) he got near 60 mpg.

let's skip forward to the fact that our cars don't need to run on gas. well the current ones do, but there are several other ways of powering an engine! we don't need to accept the fact that gasoline is the only thing that transports us.

CHelsey could get us al good deals on horses... of course they produce a different sort of waste to deal with....

Leighton - they have plenty of ice cream here in Hamburg - they just don't have ice. The first thing I always do on my trip back is get an ice tea at the McDonald's in O'hare. All drinks here are warm and carbonated.

One of these days I'll have to check out the reef stores. Maybe german equipment is cheaper here.

The EPA is reworking the calculations they use for hybrids. The current calculations are WAY overstating hybrid mileage - even more than gas only EPA figures.

In any case, I'm not against hybrids - I think it is great to make alternative technologies available. I'm less interested in hybrids that are geared to gas savings and more interested in the larger Lexus and Toyota hybrids that are faster than their gas counterparts. Unfortunately - they are too expensive so I'll be looking instead of buying.

Yesterday on MSNBC there was an article about this topic and why a single day boycot would not work. Pretty much the whole idea of a single day boycot is a flawed process. It is a fairly interesting article and if you can spare a few minutes it would be worth reading.

Article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18492185/

One aspect of these increased gas prices that know one has touched on is the "08" elections around the corner.

Bare with me on this....... From the Dept of Energy website on Retail Historical Gas Prices for the Midwest Regular Conventional Retail Gas Prices data.

11/16/92 $1.089 gal.
11/11/96 $1.23 gal. or 14% increase from previous election
11/13/00 $1.508 gal. or 23% increase ""
11/15/04 $1.869 gal. or 24% increase ""
05/07/07 $3.00 gal. or 61% increase "".

So from the time that Bill Clinton was elected in 92 until the time he left office. Gas prices went up 40% for the 2 terms. 14% for his first term.

Since George Bush was elected in 00 through to day gas prices have gone up 100%. $1.508 to $2.999. During his first term they went up 24%.

This fall when gas prices drop and the debates begin you will see the Republican side explaining how they have dropped fuel costs and saved you money. The other side, will tell you how fuel prices have sky rocketed over the past 8 years and do you want more of these high fuel cost.

Just a thought.

Guys,
I've been following this thread as I could smell it's potential to turn into a political argument. You've surprised me by how well most of you have avoided taking the political road, but a few posts today made it necessary for me to stop in and warn you. Political discussion never goes well, and for that reason, it's banned here. I think most of you already knew that, but this little memory refresher can't hurt anyone.

Here is a little something to think about that I cut and pasted from another forum.

Just got this in an email... Might put a bit of perspective on things...

"All these examples do NOT imply that gasoline is cheap; it just illustrates how outrageous some prices are....

Compared with Gasoline......

Think a gallon of gas is expensive?

This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective.

Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ... $10.32 per gallon

Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ..........$9.52 per gallon

Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 .... $10.17 per gallon

Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ......... $10.00 per gallon

Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ......... $33.60 per gallon

Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 ... $178.13 per gallon

Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 .. $123.20 per gallon

Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ....... . $25.42 per gallon

Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 .....$84.48 per gallon

And this is the REAL KICKER...

Evian water 9 oz $1.49..........$21.19 per gallon!

$21.19 for WATER and the buyers don't even know the source.

(Evian spelled backwards is Naive.)

Ever wonder why computer printers are so cheap?

So they have you hooked for the ink.

Someone calculated the cost of the ink at................

you won't believe it...................

but it is true.........................

$5,200 a gal. ( Five thousand two hundred dollars !! )

So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, Pepto Bismol, Nyquil or God forbid, Printer Ink!!!!!"

For comedy sake...my 10 year old Firebird with 108k miles on it gets 30-32 mpg on the highway, my 3 year old Accord gets 30-32 mpg on the highway. Now how can a 10 year old car with twice the cubic inches that is heavier get the same mileage as a new car that is so much more technologically advanced than my old pushrod Pontiac? FWIW they both get about 20-25 city mpg but the Bird is so much more fun to drive.

Keep the Hybrids out of my way, I will be the one rocketing past you with the t-tops off and Def Leopard cranking. :D

LOL...yeah but if you grew up with them you would understand. You will also find me listening to Korn, Tool, Metallica, Stabbing Westward, Nine Inch Nails, etc. But I still have a love for old school stuff and anything from the 80's. LOL I will listen to anything but Country Music which is an oxymoron. :D I won't be listening to anything in a Hybrid.

I was just kidding Jack, I love 80s

metallica is my favorite band

also like poison

but I also like country too

As soon as you pull up in it you are on, until then it is just a dream. :D

We should make the race to KC and back...oh wait...you can only go 350 miles on a charge, you can only go about 25 mph faster than me so while you are recharging a couple of times I will be having pizza with Capo and Nook.

Cool car though, just not practical.
