Consumer Reports has said that most of the gas savings on a hybrid will be null and void after replacing the batteries, which needs to be done after 5 years or so.
FALSE. (kind of)
they may have said that several years ago. It is no longer true.
Hybrids are more advanced now. The honda civic hybrid comes with an 8 year warrenty on the batteries.
Comparison:
Honda Civic Hybrid Sticker: 22,600
Honda Civic EX(most of the same features): $18,710
Federal tax credit for buying a hybrid: $2,100 (from what i found)
If you compare the hybrid's gas mileage to the gasoline civic, assuming:
If gas is at $3.00 a gallon for the next 5 years
You only drive highway miles
The gasoline civic gets 40 and the hybrid gets 51
You only drive 60 miles a day.
Then the hybrid saves you $1,771.
Then you've lost $19 by buying a hybrid.
But!
Over the next 5 years we can assume gas is going to get way more expensive. The savings add up reeeal quick if gas is at $4.
Most of us drive more then 60 miles a day (the more you drive the more you save)
And they hybrid gets 49 miles to the gallon in the city compared to 30 for the gas civic. And most of us drive at least some city miles.
Not to mention the lost time it takes to stop and fill up your tank all the time. My time is worth money. and i just wasted a lot of it by making this post....
