Let's discuss the price of gas and SUVs

Ok, so on other forums lately there have been threads asking how high gas prices would have to go for you to change your driving habits. I particularly like this thread . So, I'm wanting a civilized discussion on how much gas prices suck and if you think owning and SUV in times like these is sane. Here is another interesting link on SUVs. I am not an SUV owner, though sometimes it would sure be easier to have an SUV than my scion tC (such as when hauling tanks and horses around), but I do entirely too much driving for it to be logical. I'm in an arguing mood tonight, and there really isn't anything going on so I figured that this might be a good thread to start (albeit pointless, since we won't really be able to change anything, but hey, I'm done with finals and have nothing better to do  )

yeah the Gas prices sink! The part that sucks is it cost me and my wife $150 a week just to drive back and fourth to work, that does not include if we want to run here or there. And neither one of us have a SUV Wife is getting close to landing a job working from home so that will help us out a ton. Because It only cost me $50 a week.

Actually Lonnie they have been on the rise.:D
Gotta love how they start to rise when eveyone gets ready to do more driving and other outdoor activitys as summer aproaches.

Ashley plans on getting a new car within the next 6 months or so. She's wanted huge things that get about 5 tire rotations to the gallon. She then saw a Vue and likes those, and I explained to her that she can get the Hybrid for a reasonable price. It gets the best mpg of all SUV's. I think it was 20/28.

I've been saying I want to get a big ol truck when I get a career after school. (about 10 months away) Then gas went over $3 (and the trucks I wanted only got 18 and 20 highway mpg) and now I decided I'll get something fun and sporty like an RSX or a GTI Mk V

Here are the steps I take when filling up my SUV.

1 - Drive until the little red light blows up.
2 - Push SUV into gas station area...
3 - swipe credit/debit card
4 - start bit#$%ing

Repeat in 4 to 5 days.

I need to get a new ride and was looking into hibrids but I just can't get myself to buy one. I would feel like I'm driving a toy.

How's the tc fearing up in the real world? I was looking at that and the 350Z. Good thing about the Z is that it would be parked for 3 or 4 month in the winter lol.

Chelsey, you probably know this but when I took my son back to Columbia last night, gas was only( ) $2.85 at QT. Why is it $3.11 at QT in St. Peters? Same gas, an hour away, to me this seems like a blatant rip-off!!!

IMO, it's all how you drive

I drive a hatchback hyundai elantra, supposedly 30+ mpg

the only time I see 30mpg (I have a dash computer thing) is when IM on the highway with cruise on

the way I drive in the city, Im lucky to get over 22

so the point is, if you drive like an idiot (me) you wont get any mileage

lucky for me I live 3 minutes from school and dont travel around the city a lot

cant do this discussion makes me mad that politicians can turn their head and let gas prices get this high right now there isn't a high demand and there not even shipping as much but supposely the production at refineries are down so its up high now but in summer when demand is higher which they say 5 percent higher demand i'm sure price will be more than 5 percent higher. On other hand my wife drives an HHR chevy which get 450 miles per full tank probally about 30 mpg, and of course I have a new f-150 so i spend some money so now we do things closer to home and don't go camping alot or any vacations will be close by gas prices have affected on how we do things. Me and the wife both got new 2006 models hers in december 2005 mine in january 2006 so she has 16,000 miles now and i have 9,000 miles so not bad considering they are both 2006 models but it shows that we drive car as much as possible cause i work and wife don't.

well when you drive a hundred plus a day 100+ that is and have a 28 gal tank v8 there's no solution. carpool would be cool but who lives in hazelwood and works in belleville,il besides me ya know?

i drive a honda civic. i get about 37 miles to the gallon and it ****es me off. i drive a lot of highway and i don't accelerate quickly.
i don't know how someone with an SUV is tolerating this at all.
my wife wants an SUV. there is no way.
my next car without a doubt will be a hybrid.

The problem with hybrids is that you usually can't justify them based on the gas savings. They seem to run at least $3-4k premium over their gas-only counterparts. If you save 20% on gas then it would take you 5000 gallons of $3 gas to recoup your investment.

That means a payback period of . . . check my calculator . . . well over 100,000 miles.

A small, gas only car driven at the speed limit is your best way to cut gas costs.

That particular QT and the BP down the street from them are usually the last ones to change their gas prices over. Everywhere else the price of gas was $2.95. It's just a matter of time before QT and BP make their prices go up too :(

i think it's better then 20%, and you can also factor in the hybrid tax credit. (don't know how much that is)

they don't look that great and plus no one could survive a crash in that little thing. thats why when we got rid of our jeep liberty cause of gas prices we went with chevy HHR

Id' rather pay for gas than drive an aveo

Shoot, I'd rather walk than drive an Aveo.

I rented one once...I couldn't even stand to drive it for three days.
