Let's discuss the price of gas and SUVs

Consumer Reports has said that most of the gas savings on a hybrid will be null and void after replacing the batteries, which needs to be done after 5 years or so. They called buying a hybrid over a regular fuel friendly car purely a feel good move.

As a kicker, it will become a problem to dispose of these batteries once they start needing to be replaced.

I love it when people get the sticker shock when they are told how much it cost to replace the battery on a hybrid.

some guy used to leave his shed open so we used to lift gas all the time from his lawn mower shed

good thing it was never gas/oil mix

I can only get Gas out of Steve's car up at the shop, because all of the other cars require that the driver opens the Gas cover.

Dispose? Heard of a river? i kid i kid

Dennis, on those batteries......5 years is no problem. Buy new, you get a warranty.

" Although no one can predict exactly how long the hybrid batteries will last, the manufacturers stand behind their products. For example, on hybrid components, Honda provides a 8 year/80,000 mile warranty; Toyota provides an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty."

My wife has an SUV hybrid it gets decent mileage. We got it for $3000 more than the non hybrid version. All electrical components (including batteries) are covered under warranty for 10 years unlimited mileage. The tax credit on the car was close to $2500 dollars. That was a dollar for dollar credit not a tax deduction which means if you are getting back $1000 for a tax return for buying the car you get $2500 added to your return amount. The hybrid SUV gets better mileage and it will not take 10 years to recoup the additional cost. The only thing is you must research which hybrid and what you get exactly for your investment.

Hey, it could be worse. I'm on a business trip in Hamburg, Germany right now and gas here is over $6 a gallon. About half the cars are diesels and manual transmissions to cut down on fuel costs. On top of that, your auto tax is based, in part, on the fuel rating of your new car - so you are penalized from the start.

Its also 430AM right now and I'm on RC. Gotta like jet lag.

Auf Wiedersein.

Oh, but beer is cheaper here. So it all evens out. :D

Make sure you try the spargel. I like mine with salmon and the cream sauce. You can get that stuff over here. Aus Anblick heraus!

What kind of car did you get? I had a BMW 750 when I was over last year.

No BMW. I have a driver who takes me around in an E class Benz. It sounds impressive until you realize that even the taxis are Benz's.

You can't find an SUV, pickup truck, or minivan anywhere I've travelled in Europe. It probably has less to do with gas prices than the fact that the streets are so narrow and you can't park anything large.

You'd definitely go broke in Germany if you were an SUV, air conditioner, or ice maker salesman. None of those things exist over here.

My second night in Hidelburg I took a taxi down town instead of my rental because I was scared to death of scratching the 750 in the parking garage. The first night the attendent looked at me with bemusment, look at the stupid american. I thought for sure I was going to scratch the paint pulling out. We ended up with the 750 because it was the only automatic they had. I can drive a stick but the guy with me only could drive an automatic.

Pricing the gas by litre makes it cheaper. :)

Well, even though I'm not excited about the gas prices I don't complain about it.

Main reason I don’t complain is how can I? Inflation on gas since 1980 has been lower than almost anything Electric, Natural Gas, Food and other household items.

Just a few inflations on the last 27 years (March 1980-March 2007 most updated one) from didn't go back 30 as stats are not available that far back.

Bacon- 168%
Eggs- 101%
Electricity- 106%
Utility Gas- 231%
Unleaded Gas- 83%

Fact remains; there are literally thousands of reasons for increased gasoline prices and it drives me crazy to constantly hear people complaining about 2!

However, I think everyone here could probably look at there day to day lives and find a way to simply cut down on their usage with not only gas, but all our resources (NOT excluding myself)

That is exactly it man... Being what it is, compared to the rest of the developed world, we have pretty much had a free ride on Gas for a long time. I do think that in our situation here, that the gas prices seem to climb every time there is a big holiday, or summer approaching. Smacks of profiteering....

Gas prices will go back down again in Sept. when the kids are back in school, and there is less travel going.. Then come spring they will go right back up.

And what is sad the price of bacon that went up 168% will have to increase again probably double that, along with everything else, at the stores. It takes gas to get everything to the store.. Trucks need more money just to keep the trucks running, that will cause everything to cost more. Min. wage will go up, are pay may go up 3-4 % if we are lucky. But the oil companies rank up with billion $ profits.. We go broke, they roll over in wealth.

I understand that everything needs an increase as times change. But why would the gov. let something continue to raise that high that everyone needs, and the oil companies are still making billions? They wanted to slap Bill Gates, because everyone was buying his computers saying it was a monopoly... Not really True.. I didn't have to buy a computer.. I have to buy gas. JMO

With the gas prices going up that will cause everyone to stop doing the extra things they did, shop, vacation, or what ever they spend their extra money on, (mine being this hobby). When people stop buying is when the economy will start hurting, and even more people start loosing there jobs, and the smaller maw-paw shows close. So I guess that will give the gov. another reason to send more of our jobs over seas, to get things made/done cheaper so business don't have to close doors. But wait.. the unemployment rate is down.. Does that mean more people are working.. Nope, that just means the government has one less person claiming unemployment so the % makes them look good.

wow I feel better.. Not!

Ive never been more jealous of you, Mike

Germany is my favorite, too bad you're there working

when I was in Germany I coudlnt believe how many ice cream shops there were...maybe youre just missing them

part of living in America is that we get to enjoy this lifestyle that many others dont, paying a little extra and some "convenience" fees is worth it to me to have a sweet home theater, a boat, a big truck, etc (even though I dont have any of that.......yet)

Two things on that... I have as little money left for hobbies and stuff as the next guy, so my cash is dear to me. I don't like the price of gas, but I would like to think I'd be one of the first people who would say that we cannot tell a business how much they are allowed to charge for their product.

There are already laws against profiteering. Many undeveloped countries have low gas prices because of heavy government subsidies. It is extremely hard to compete against situations like that here at home. If our government did something like that, it would have to be at the expense of some other service that people would cry about losing to cutbacks.

Lonnie I do agree with you in that this cuts both ways. People drive less and have less disposable income due to gas, so it does indeed effect the whole economy, not just the oil and gas industries.

The second thing is if you and Stupid would quit buying bacon by the truckload, the prices there would ease up a bit...

We used to have a Durango that got about 14 MPG. Wife always wanted a VW bug so we the Durango started burning oil we traded it in on a bug. I got the diesel engine and am really happy with the car. AI get almost 40MPG inthe city and I took it to Chicago a couple of weeks ago went 560 miles and it used 12.5 gallons of gas. I miss the extra room but figure I will get a truck when the other car goes south. Neither of us, luckly, dive much for work. i work for the city we live in and she walks out our back door and rides the Metro link to work, which her work pays for her monthly pass. I am happy that diesel is actually cheaper than regular right now.

wow this gas thread has really taken off.

I think the oddest thing said so far was this, "So I guess that will give the gov. another reason to send more of our jobs over seas, to get things made/done cheaper so business don't have to close doors."

did the government ever force a company to send jobs overseas? people need to realize the global economy we are living in changes everything we have done since the end of WWII when we became "a great nation". Our government is screwed but not that screwed. They should make higher MPG requirements than they have. The government and this country should not be spending two years to pick the next presidential candidates.

On gas. Simple enough. Move closer to work. Drive less. Get a more fuel efficient vehicle. I drive a Hyundai and drive 80 miles roundtrip to work each day. I share rides and have started walking more for things when in e'ville. If it could I would ride the metrolink. Prices are not going down. They may dip back below $3 as happened yesterday/today but dont count on seeing $1.99 gas anytime soon. Short of people in this counrty realizing they do not need an SUV for their daily commute not too much is going to change.

Honestly I would rather have the federal government work on something that fits the following criteria. Something they are not being lobbied for. Something that hasnt contributed to their campaign. Something that actually produces results. They will. When they all go fishing or work on their tee shots over that 2 month break they all get over the summer.

On a side note I wish they didnt sell beer in the U.S. 3 hours of sleep is not enough. What a rant I just had, sorry all.
