Lets see those 5' Tanks!

I have the same tank you do and was wondering about the sides being tempered to. Mine had a tag on it that said do not drill and a sticker on the bottom that said tempered do not drill. So I'm not sure if its just the bottom or all sides. Are you possitive that the back is not tempered?

Well... Im not 100% positive... yet. I sent Marineland (who now owns Perfecto) an email a few days ago asking this question and have not heard back from them yet. MSU Fan said that he was told that the only piece of glass that is tempered is the bottom. My tank only had the sticker on the bottom that says "Tempered Glass, Do Not Drill". In my experience, the bottom is usually the only glass thats tempered. I also noticed that my Perfecto tank has the beveled glass corners (like the Oceanic tanks). Im thinking that this is a sign that they are UNtempered (unless the bevel was made before they tempered the glass).

I think Im going to call them tomorrow and get it strait from the horses mouth. I will post my results.

I just bought one of these tanks (the Top Fin tank at Petsmart, but it's still made by Perfecto), and I even called them. They only temper the bottom according to them.

AZ, Did you DIY your stand/canopy (and what the HeCk are you feeding those green zoas?!?:spin2: :spin2: :spin2: )

Yep, I built the stand, canopy and the side stand that hides the chiller. The tank is a LeeMar Diamond Edge with a custom offset center overflow, I wanted something a little different and they were glad to do it. I also had them drill all 5 holes at the factory and provide the bulkheads for a good fit. Since they are in the San Diego area shipping to Phoenix was really reasonable.

I superglued about 5 polyps on the overflow and they just took off! I also have zenia on the far right back too. For some reason when I switched from XM 10k bulbs to Reeflux 10k the zoas have declined? I thought XM was brighter than Reeflux but the zoas think otherwise. I plan to switch to Reeflux 12k in the next few weeks, hopefully the zoas will like that!

Very well done. Im going to be building a stand and canopy later this spring / early summer. I hope it comes out as 'furniture grade" as yours!

As far a the lighting, Im currently using (2) 150W Phoenix DE bulbs on my 30. I will have to use these for a while on the 120, mainly because Im cheap... and because I just changed the bulbs 3 days ago! I like the DE type of bulb for some reason, and the Phoenix has proven to be a nice all around bulb (IMO/IME) so I will likely set my sights on a pair of the 250W Phoenix DE bulbs down the road.

My main concern initially will be F L O W
I only use 2 Maxijet 1200's on a wave timer now, which isnt going to cut it in the bigger 120 gal tank.

For flow I have an OR 3500 return pump from my 30G sump, a closed loop also with an OR 3500 through an Oceans Motions Squirt two way and two Koralia #4s. The Phoenix bulbs are very popular around here and have good color. I supplement with 2x140w VHO Super Actinics so it might be too blue for me which is why I chose the 10k bulbs. I may find the 12k Reeflux too blue but I'm going to try them, if nothing else I will eliminate the VHO or switch one VHO tube to an actinic day if its too blue.

The back wall of your tank is awesome, like a living wall. Hope you never have to move your tank.

Very Nice. I too run the starboard in my 30 gallon BB reef setup. My new 120 will be BB but Im strongly considering just skipping the starboard and just putting the rocks on the glass bottom. I figure I can use some of the reef epoxy putty to build flat "feet" for the base rocks so that there is not any areas with a lot of weight on a single point on the glass.

BTW, I appreciate your service to the cause of freedom.

Have you thought about the possibility of doing an external box for the overflow? I did one on my new tank setup and love the fact that i don't have to stare at an ugly overflow tower in the tank. Not to mention the added bonus of the surface skimming of the water as well. My build thread is here:

and i got the idea from this thread:

Thanks for the links! (and nice tank BTW)

Im probably going to do some sort of a 'slim' Calfo style overflow box inside the tank. This tank is glass and I dont think that I will chew up too much room inside the tank if I go with an internal box. This tank is 26" tall so it wont bother me too much to have a 5 or 6" overflow box inside along the back wall.

I think Im going to go with the 3-pipe drain system that Herbie and BeanAnimal are using. Silence is a critical requirement for this system.

On another note, I was able to dispell my fears that the back glass of my tank was made of tempered glass. Since Marineland bought Perfecto, they now have the tank specs posted in .pdf format on their website. Notice that the only tank that they make that is ALL tempered is their 55 gallon, which they clearly indicate on this chart (yellow highlight). The green highlight is the tank that I purchased, which lists the BOTTOM as the only tempered pane of glass.

This is great news!!

Thats great news!!! Now I wont be so scared of drilling mine. Are you going to drill it yourself or have someone do it for you?

I have a set of diamond hole saw bits and have drilled a few holes so I think I will take care of the drilling myself.
