lets talk heaters

so what heaters are the best value for the $? I never really asked this question but how many watts do you need to heat about 80g? Never has been an issue because my room temp is in high 70s and the heater I have now is doing the job.

I like the Fluval E heaters. They seem to be working very well. I am only aware of one failing and breaking but with the 5 year warrantee I still think its a good rout.

Ebo Jagers are a classic quality heater that works great. I have a handful of them (200 and 300watt models) that have failed. Some don't shut off and some don't heat. Those that don't heat I think just have a bad connection or a break in the coil.

The aquaclear cheaper type of heater have statistically all been great. Not a single one that I can think of failed. But almost all of them end up having some condensation inside.

Finex probe heaters have been bad. I only tried three of four and all broke within few months of use.

Buoy stainless steel heaters have been pretty good. Solid metal rod that will never break. I found two duds (light goes on but no heat) out of over 100 heaters I have in use now.

Overall I have to say that most heater brands and models will have defects. I suggest not going overboard on the wattage especially with small tanks to prevent cooking the fish. Chances of one failing do go up with the age of the heater as connections can oxidize and ware. If possible replacing a heater every two years may not be a bad idea.

3 two hundred watters and a 250 for the main 600 gallon system. They are in the sump in just past where the drains enter. They are mounted on a piece of plexiglass that doubles as a baffle to create a micro bubble purging run . This helps to keep them from floating up or bouncing around.
Like Gary, I can't remember what they are. They are hooked to a Ronco controlller which is set a 2 degrees less than the heater thermostats. This should ensure the heaters go off once the temperature hits the heater setting if the controller thermostat sticks on which it never has over the last years or so.
The controller is connected to a plug in gfci device

Looks like I'm going to stick with Ebo Jagers. I like Mike's idea of rotating them, though I can't promise I won't just let them rot away in my sump. I do use them on a controller with parameters.

With lighting, house heat, and ancillary pumps, keeping it warm hasn't really ever posed and issue for me. Now, in the summer time, I've certainly had issues with too much heat. There have been a couple of nail biter hot days in the past that warranted a "lights out"!
