Levamisole In-Tank Treatment for AEFW

Here again guys!
*Is anyone using the Levamisole from charles@inkmkr.com? He said is more pure than Prohibit, he said also that he use 5 grams/300gls, and also that you can mix it with 3 oz of water and you can keep the leftovers in the refrigerator for some weeks.
*Also is any reason why we can't use filter sucks during the 5 hours period of the dosage?
*If the AEFW's eggs hatch in 10 days, I think that we should repeat the dosage every 11-12 days.

Thanks again for your attention and for an interesting and important topic like this.

I got mine from him and I also used filter socks during the treatment. Did my first treatment yesterday and everything went well. However, i thought it was Prohibit... I guess not..

mos90: For prazi, I pour, i cap full per gallon of water. If you think you have other parasites as well, then you are better off with coralRX.

What about your dosage?
How long(hours)you left the medicine in your tank before you add some GFO/GAC?
Then your skimmer turned crazy?

elblond, I mixed one of the 5 gram packs in a small bottle of water. I used roughly 75% of the that bottle, which represents close to my total tank volume.. I left it in for probably about 9 hours before I did a water change and added GAC. I did leave my skimmer running throughout the treatment, but took the cup off. I carbon dose, so I was very concerned about oxygen depletion.. Keeping the skimmer running took away my concerns.. To be honest, my skimmer is EXTREMELY sensitive and it really didnt go crazy as a result of the Levamisole..

This is where we started this journey. I would still do everything the same way EXCEPT I would dose six times every 5-6 days. This alteration is based upon observations made by contributors to this thread.

So after some initial discussion in a different thread about using Levamisole for an in tank treatment for eradication of AEFW, I decided to make a dedicated thread to document my experiences and maybe some others can chime in with theirs.

First I would like to thank Bax for the help with this. His info was what got me to try this in the first place.

Quick backstory, I have been battling AEFW for about 2 months now and have lost some of my prized SPS pieces. Pretty heartbreaking. I have been doing dips every 4-5 days with Revive but they just keep coming back. Finally I have had enough and decided I'm willing to give levamisole a shot, I don't care if I wipe every SPS I have in my tank trying.

Levamisole, as some may know, is a dewormer. People in the freshwater side have been using it for a long time, especially discus keepers. Lately many of the products such as "Prohibit" that are used for pigs, goats and sheep have been very hard to find, due to some issues with the FDA. I managed to acquire it under the name "Vermisol" designed for birds. It comes in either a pill or powder form. I opted for the pills, which contain 23.6mg of Levamisole each, with a bottle containing 100 pills. The powder contains 7.5 grams of Levamisole but would require a little more work figuring out the dosage, but in the end it is cheaper.

I would like to say that I am merely documenting my experience and should not be held responsible if any negatives occur. Levamisole is much more powerful than something like Interceptor and you can definitely overdose it.

To get started I took some information from Bax's post:

Thanks Jonathan and Bax.
Ok no problem!
I have read the thread many times and still continue reading it!
If I understand, by experience and observations yours and from some contributors.
Bax you recommend to treat the tanks every 5-6 days for six times?

Do any of you that have done the prohibit txt have Zoa's, Paly's or chalice in your tanks. Did you notice any negative affects on them? Thanks

Yes, if I were to start a treatment today, that is what I would do.

Keep in mind all systems are different. If you feel your system is stressed, don't do 5-6 days, slide it 7-10, but don't wait too long, and don't do less than the six treatments. It seems as though most people here have not had bad effects from the repeated treatments, but many have not seen enough good effect. That has to be dosing is too low, or not enough doses.

The next thing I am curious about, is should we be slowly increasing the dosage to kill the more resistant AEFWs?

Sorry if I missed it, but has anyone got any results from just treating a few FW's in a glass with prohibit just to see how much it really takes to kill them?

I was hoping to do a test like that, haven't found any flatworms lately though. I have been dipping in revive every 3 days now.

I read on a few reef sites that this treatment is no good , does more harm than good doseing this stuff. I read that it is highly not recommended to in tank dose for AEFW because thay have a defense mechanism when treated with something like this , Thay release toxins i the water when dead witch takes a few week or months thay said. The first sign is the fish not being as active then slowly dying off then a tank crash flowes with it. Thay said dipping is the only safe why to treat AEFW .

Got a link? This sounds like conjecture to me. It's true that if you have a infestation of red planaria and have a massive die off they release toxins. Nothing that some carbon and water changes can't handle. I've treated my tank 4 times starting about 5 weeks ago and my fish are all fine, eating like pigs.

Still following along to see what the long-term results are...

So has anyone stopped treating for a couple of months yet to see if this treatment definitively works to eradicate the system?

I'm crossing my fingers and thank all of you trying this out so that we can finally get rid of this pest! :)

Yeah, i would like to see this thread as well.. I know people did this treatment back in 2007 and no problems. of cause dosing any meds into the tank is not a good idea ,BUT...AEFW is a Bi&&***
