Before everyone gets bent out of shape please remember we don't know the history on this anemone. For all we know this could be a return from someone who had it for a while and it just out grew their tank. Besides we all take stuff from the ocean for our tanks don't we? I am all for responsible reef keeping and conservation as I think most people are. When a reef keeper starts complaining about one animal being removed from the ocean then turns around and buys stuff for their own tank that was removed from the ocean it just seems a little silly to me? Why even stir the pot?

size of a coral does indicate age.... i would think a 2foot anemone, probably even bigger, would take over 10 years to grow that much in the wild. even if it was 10-20 years, thats also a very long time and something that big shouldve have been taken out of the wild.

And the anti collection advocacy group in this thread need to perhaps take a look at the hobby they are in. :fun2:
 
seriously, i love carpets, and here is my personal take on it. i would not want to put such a huge carpet in my tank, it lost it's beauty and appreciatetion after a certain size, even in a very large tank. so that is why some folks here think it's best left in the ocean, maybe in the wild, this thing can spawn and reproduce more carpets for us to collect? such large size would be hard to sell and if fall in the hands of not-know-how reefer who can afford it, it will not thrive and eventually meet it's death. even in the hands of experienced reefer, how long can it live? 5 or 10 years? then what? imagine how many babies this thing produce in a 5 years span.......

ever wonder why large black tang is less desireable than smaller ones?

Or stick to buying tank-raised or aquacultured animals, which has the dual advantages of keeping you in the hobby while not plundering wild reefs for ecologically valuable animals with low reproduction rates. ;)

It's a similar argument that fish size limits should be max size, not minimum size. The bigger fish reproduce more and add to the population better. Instead of limiting to 8 carpets a day (or whatever the limit is), it could be 1 of 12" or greater and 10 of 12" or less, its an idea probably for a different thread.

Either way, it is a beautiful carpem nem and I would love to get one of that color, let alone that size.
 
alright i stand corrected on age but i still believe a giant beauty like that should stay in the wild. im just saying almost everyones tank will get a problem sooner or later and can cause it to die
 
Anemone tissue is interesting because it does not seem to degrade with age. Although size is not an indicator that this anemone IS 100 years old, it certainly could be. There are anemones in captivity that have been kept this long.

I don't understand why comments like "those who criticize collecting need to take a look at the hobby they are in", like that gives us permission to be reckless. As hobbyists, we have greater knowledge and greater responsibility to make sure that our hobby remains sustainable.
 
How do we know that this anemone wanst bought and traded in?This anemone may have been 6 inches when bought and someone thought it got to big for their tank so they traded it in!WE JUST DONT KNOW!

The owner told me he wouldn't sell that large RBTA... :(
However, I did buy the electric green GBTA about 5 feet to the left. And the carpet looks way bigger in person. It was a dark pink when I saw it. I would have bought it if I had MH... But since I don't I just got the electric green GBTA. I went there yesterday, so I'm sure they still have it. I think I might be going back tomorrow to look for RBTA... :fun2:

I also liked the small GSM clown swimming in the basket with the RBTA!

That was exactly my original point! Sadly, the "worst casers" come out in every thread with the worst case senerio. Despite having no history of this anemone whatsover they have already given the animal a name and can tell you without a doubt that it has been abused every day since it's collection. They have seen a single picture so they instantly "know" it's collection date, collection location and that the evil diver that pulled that poor thing off of the reef must have beat it with a baseball bat all the way to shore. :rollface:

Oh, and by the way, they have three anemones in their own tanks right now that will inevitably crash eventually sometime in the next 5 years but that doesn't count because they really "care" alot!

I think more about this and it seems like the most logical explanation....I mean how would this thing be shipped? Not to mention the collection on a creature like this would be extremely difficult.

And I agree BUT outside of CITES whose job is it to determine what is collected? It is completely subjective as to what is "reckless" and what isn't. Honestly...if that anemone was collected at that size it is really no different than the thousands of others collected every year.

congrats! it was actually 5 feet to the right from this perspective haha... but that carpet was amazing as well.... much smaller then the pink.purple one but still very very big. if you dont mind me asking how much did he charge you for the carpet? if you could pm that would be great.


and for the record... i dont think any other place in the bay area, other then the monterey bay aquarium, is equipped to handle such a large anemone and im glad that this lfs was able and willing to care for it. im sure they didn't ask for it to get taken from the sea, if it was even collected from there, and im sure they knew it would be near impossible to sell... but they took it on either way and are providing it the best home available here in northern cali
