LFS- has a fish I want but...

The fish has ich... She told me should "dip" the fish and it would be ready to go in a few days..

Now maybe I am over thinking this, but Im not certain I want the fish anymore. I really do not want to have any problems in my tank or with my other fish. Considering its a pretty new tank.

Am I being overly insane about this or what??:headwalls:

Considering it is pretty common to just assume all fish have ich, and QT them, unless the outbreak is really really bad I don't see why not. Unless it is an easier to get fish, then can't hurt to wait on another.

ok, thank you. I knew it was common, I am just being crazy about this tank. I have been searching for this certain fish for a while, with no luck until sunday. Figures it would have a problem and couldn't come home with me.

Do you plan on QT the fish? if so then if the fish still seems healthy other than the ich get it.

If you do not plan to QT then it is a crap shoot either way. Good luck just my 2cents.

No way. She sheds the fish, you get the bill---and she makes a profit if it kills all your other fish and then dies.

Whatever it is, you can order it online, maybe not as cheaply, but life is long, tanks last for years, and this is not the last of its kind, not even if it's a coelocanth. Dip the fish and it'll be ok, indeed---not!

agreed.
i'm not sticking anything in my tank that already has obvious signs of stress.
would you stick a coral frag in that is covered with apstasia and bubble algae? i sure don't.

Ok thank you Sk8r. That was my gut feeling that it wouldnt matter what she did, that some how i would end up dealing with it.

I have been iffy about ordering fish online, but at this time it may be my only option.

Thank you again.

OP, as a newbie who is "obsessed" with his tank, I can relate. I've wanted a Flameback Angel badly since I started up my most recent tank (in fact, I wanted one before I started). One of my LFS had/has one that's about an inch long, active, happy, etc. I said I would wait until my tank is mature to buy one and I have to admit, the impulse has been hard to fight now that I've seen it in person. However, I know I can get one on LiveAquaria or another site when I'm actually ready (set an in-stock alert if it's not currently available). I'd rather have to pay extra for shipping than have to buy the same fish twice because I wasn't ready/ it wasn't healthy.

I lost a coral beauty (bought the first one I saw even though it had clear physical injuries) on my first SW tank over a decade ago. It's tough to fight the urge, but listen to the others here.

What kind of fish are we talking about here?

I knew that was coming..
Don't laugh.. promise.....

It was a tiny tiny itty bitty blue tang for my daughter. She has been asking for one and I finally found a wee little baby one....
It was a sad car ride home.

We have lost a whole tank before.. 150 gallon went bye bye in the blink of an eye because of a boxfish... Ever since then, I am so paranoid.

I wouldn't risk it myself. There are plenty of places to get healthy fish and I don't think I would buy anything from that store livestock wise. She want's to sell it and not deal with it and make money with no guarantee it will live or make it. She needs to treat it and then you can buy it if you feel the need.

I am researching other places to get fish.. Where I am there are not a ton of fish stores. Closest one is a half hour away and they just get farther from there.

But I think I am going to pass on this fish, and just wait till I find another one. I really do not want to chance it with this little one.

What Sk8r said, x 10,000. Especially a Blue Tang. They may very well be the worst fish there is when it comes to being disease prone. In addition, the very small ones have a dismal survival rate even if purchased in good health.

Can you tell us about your tank? Size, age, filtration, lighting, water parameters (with actual numbers).

Perhaps we could offer a suitable alternative.

Regardless, not using a proper QT for ANY fish is sorta like playing Russian roulette with 5 of 6 chambers loaded, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE QT, and think long and hard about TTM (tank transfer method) to prevent problems in the DT.

I feel your pain. All I have in my town is Petco and a Local Pet Store that has been in business for 30+ years. The Local Pet Store is horrible and I honestly don't know how they have survived all these years. The Local Pet Store makes Petco look good!!! So I have to drive at least an hour to get to good quality places to buy from.

We had an amusing thread going re 'Dory' in which it became apparent that kids (and many adults) have a real good imagination and would happily settle for any yellow and blue fish named Dory. The little yellowtail damsel stays a very appropriate size for Nemo, and they can partner forever. Real Dory gets a foot long, fat, and cranky.

Yup we have a yellowtail damsel now that everyone calls Dory, so it isn't a huge deal.
But situations like this is exactly why I dislike taking my children with me to the fish store! haha
