Lfs in so cal

Wow ... all the fish stores in that area are making me so jealous! (I'm on the east coast ... MA)

Anyway, we're planning a short lay-over in LA; any recommendations on fish stores worth visiting?

I went through the entire 11 pages, and have this list:

Can someone let me know if there are any other good ones worth visiting, and/or if some of these have closed?

Obviously we won't be able to visit all :-P but would def. love to pick and choose .....

Thanks!

how long is "a short lay-over"?...

IMO, Vivid is a must see...but Reef Hot Spot is long gone!

Don't want to look through all eleven pages to find, what do you guys thing of global aquatics in Ontario?

Always wondered how they stay in business. This place has so much potential. A wholesale like environment but price are double from what local LFS are charging. $50 for mid sized yellow tangs is one example. This place has all the wholesale packaging equipment. Only thing missing is the wholesale like pricing

Does anyone know if Aquarium Works in N. Hollywood is still open? I called and the line was disconnected.

They're closed. I drove by a month ago and it's all boarded up... You can check out Scales n Tales; it's close to the closed down Aquarium Works however I haven't checked it out yet.

Oh wow.. That sucks, I used to go there often. It was so close to my work. Jose and Steve were really chill.

Maybe I'll check the Scales and Tales soon. Thanks.

Just went by Scales n Tales today. Not bad store, has mostly fishes for SW and FW. Didn't see any coral selection but their specialty is reptiles.

Cool, maybe I'll stop by soon.

I went to The Aquarium over the weekend. I *thought* I saw a thread some time back and most people had negative feedbacks..

My review is they are a hidden gem of an LFS. They had corals from small frags, mini colony and full sized colony. *If you are an SPS fanatic this store is not for you* The price seem fair to average compared to other LFS. I picked up 5 astrea snails, single head purple centered green rim blasto welsi, 10+ head blasto merletti and a 7 huge headed duncans for under 90 bucks.

They are somewhat small but I prefer smaller LFS with good selection of corals so I like it.

I'm in need of some really nice live rock. Maybe it's because I'm a SW newbie, but the places I've been too seem to all have the same rock. Coraline rock that grows purple algae. I don't really want an all purple fowlr tank.... or is that the norm? /clueless

I've been to TATs in Thousand Oaks, Vivid in the valley, and Peters tropical fish in Simi.

Where the eff can I get some nice colorful rock with a lot of life on it? I'd prefer to stay closer rather than go far, and I don't care about cost.

Anyone near Inglewood area?

About 7 years ago or so I used to go to a huge warehouse style store in an industrial area near the airport. I can't remember the street it was on or what it was called. It was big like a wholesale place and they had tons of fish and a seperate dry goods room with a HUGE display tank that was loaded with fish. I don't think they had corals at all. Anyone know the place I'm talking about?

If so is it still there?

Ha!! That's it. Looks like it's still in business too. It's probably changed a lot since the last time I stepped foot in there.

The prices here are ok, but look them up on the web and they have a coupon for 30% off most livestock making some pretty good deals to be had. I would post up a link but i think it is against RC's rules.

Aquarium World on Century Blvd.

Good to know. 30% is not bad and I might have to get a clean up crew when I'm in LA this weekend. The snails and hermits seem pretty cheap.

Lek was always cool to me and hooked me up a couple times if I remember right. At one time I had a porcupine Puffer in a fish only tank but it outgrew my tank. I loved that thing because it was like a dog. It would follow you along the tank and eat out of my hand.

I took it to him and said he could have it because it outgrew my tank. I think he could tell that I was attached to it and he offered to put it in his huge display tank instead of selling it. It was awesome because I could always give it a visit and check him out whenever I went to the store. Gonna have to stop in to see the new location for sure.

That place is going down the drain. The owner Lek talks down to EVERYONE. I know he has history in the industry but come on, to be so rude to much of your customers is unbelievable. Use to walk in there and his employees were always negatively talking about him. The place has changed a lot from 7 years ago. The left hand side of the warehouse, what use to be the tank showroom and the spot of the large tank you speak of; that is all now wholesale stuff coming in and out I believe. The right side now carries everything. No huge fish tank other than the shark tank they've always had. They have set-up a handful of reef tanks though.

Vivid Aquarium in Canoga Park is a perfect place to buy corals/frags. I personally buy my fish from rainbow pet shop in Arleta, they seem to have better pricing on fish and are closer to my house, the staff is helpful and customer service is up to par. Rainbowpetshop has also expanded their coral selection in the recent months at great prices. They are located north of Van Nuys in the the San Fernando Valley. Vivid aquarium is located on the western part of the sanfernando valley, near woodland hills.

I just stopped by Vivid for the first time on Sunday. Pretty good selection of corals but more colonies than frags. Prices were pretty standard I guess but definitely not great. Overall a pretty good store with tons of additives, foods etc. just don't expect any bargains.
