Youll be fine with the single as SJM points out. You dont want a Dual on a 40 Breeder anyway. They are really large. About 16" long from end to end. I got the option with the black internal box. back of my tank is painted black. It blends in really well eventhough it is pretty big even in my 90 gallon. I wouldnt buy another brand personally. Not because they wont work or be as reliable. Some of them are. The LR is simply the best built, definitely overbuilt. I didnt see 200 bucks (for the dual) as an unreasonable expense for something built so well that it will be able to be moved from tank to tank for years to come. Plus the fish room is cramped and it is not uncommon to bump into the overflow and knock it around every once in a while. The peace of mind of knowing it is built so well is also worth every penny for me. If I were on a major budget, I probably would have bought something that cost less. But since I could afford it, it was a no brainer for me. I dont have to spend as much as I can on whatever I buy. Im not like that. But certian important pieces of equipment are worth spending extra to get the better stuff, for me.

I have a dual LR on my 75 that i run a Mag 12 on for a return. I believe the LR overflow will do alot more than the Mag will put out. And also no siphon loss in 2 yrs. I ordered mine with the silencers, the loudest part of my tank now is the fan on my T5 lights!!

Large 1 1/8" diameter siphon tube never loses siphon.
Rugged unit- particularly suited for larger aquariums.
My Lifereef overflow is still running as good as the day I purchased it in 1993. The Lifereef wins hands down for quality of construction alone - it's a rock solid piece of acrylic art. This is true of all of the LR acrylic work that I've seen to date. Some people can appreciate it and others don't.

What's the concept behind the silencer? Or better question... how exactly are they built? Perhaps one might run on any overflow box with 1" pvc?

I use a strainer in the couplers inside the inner box. Hole is drilled in the top of the strainers and a piece of rigid airline tubing is slid down the strainers and held at the right height with a small o ring or tie wrap. It doesnt stop 100% of the gurgle 100% of the time but seems to stop 90 - 95% of it. A longer piece of ridgid tubing or even flexible airline tubing could further fine tune it. The pirces I use are only about a foot long. They seem to work best inserted only a few inches down the drains. But experimenting with longer pieces could only help. Im very happy with an occassional gurgle which is all I hear now. Not as good as a Stockman or Durso but easy to implement and it does work for those who dont have to have a totally silent tank at every second.
Personally, I like the water noise in the background. Not a continuous gurgle, that is annoying, but once in a while doesnt bother me at all. But the general sound of the water agitiation at the water surface and water falling into the filter socks from the drains are soothing sounds to me.

For what it's worth... I had an overflow U tube on my old 46bow. It looks just like a overflow U tube looks like. Can't say they are the prettiest things... but they are what we need if we're not drilling our tanks.
