Lighting for Reef 92 Gallon Corner Tank

Chris,

The tank and inhabitants are looking good. I love the Kole Tang ... that is one that I would like to add as well someday.

I upgraded my lighting already to 2- 24" VHO's and 2-250 DE MH's. I want to grow more stoney corals and the single 250 did not cut it.

I also had my first "accident" last Friday. A snail crawled into my Durso pipe and clogged the outflow to the basement. I was in VA for business and the hubby found the mess just shorly after it started to overflow in the family room. I lost about 30 gallons on the carpet and it then flowed down to the basement fish room. No casualties occurred ... I'm darn lucky and I need to get a basket on that pipe ASAP.

I also still have some noise from the overflow and I am tempted to break out the saw and drill to create a pipe like yours. I ordered the Durso and it did reduce the noise, but the hubby still disapproves. Is your tank really quiet? I might have to call you and listen over the phone to believe it.

My first soft coral is looking pretty good...

i'm re doing my 92 in the morning... thought i'd post a few pics in case it looks worse then it does right now. Everyone says it looks great, but i am just tired of it...

thats pic is kind of old, and the csl mh bulb explains the yellow. anyways the 2nd pic is from tonight... and i turned the lights on just for the pic so thats why its so crappy looking.

what do u guys think?... i also need to add a backing and pull it a bit away from the wall when i tear it down... should i paint something on the glass, or just go with a regular tape on backing? i could also use some inspiration as to a good rock layout for this type of tank so i am open to suggestions

I actually think it is a pretty cool stack. I really like the way it looks with the caves and stuff.
the only thing I would change is add some more colorful corals and maybe a bit more actinics.... clean the glass... what I did for the backing is buy some krylon fusion paint in black and 2 sheets of frosted lights plastic sheeting and sprayed it black and used velcro to hold it in place. that way it hides the stuff in back and you can remove it to see in the stack....

it doesn't look that yellow in person witht he metal halide on...ahhh i don't know what to do now... perhaps i'll just re do the top a bit and get rid of some xenia and get a few sps... I am also thinking of going with either a reeflux 10k, or a xm 10 k... any recommendations?

I painted mine black (Krylon) directly on the glass. If I had it to do over again, I think I'd do a dark blue.

I too like the caves of your rockwork.

I just re did it today and it slopes more gently upwards towards the back, while still keeping the look of some of the caves... it doesn't look as good right now as it did before, but there are alot more places for corals, and i want to start switching to sps soooo... yeah should be nice in 3 or 4 monmths from now, especially when the coralline algae starts to reencrust the spots of rock that were in the sand or didn't get any light. I'm gonna miss how the old setup had one huge cave... the 4 openings all led to one huge cave under all the rockwork. It still has 4 openings / caves... idunno, i'll post pics soon as it settles down a bit. I also switched the sand to a larger grain size. And i just realized I forgot to put a backing on!!! son of..

did i mention there is now 471 watts, which equals a bit over 5 watts a gallon over the tank... good for some sps right?

I would use 2 - 250 watt MH-DE pendants with 14k pheonix bulbs
Get the good stuff now and you can grow anything without having to upgrade later like most of us.

but the added cost of electricity and needing a chiller prohibits me from doing so
right now the way the tank is with 4 65 watt pcs, and the 175 mh, it tops out at 79, with 6 fans blowing full blast... good thing they are silent... what about 1 250 watt mh? anyone know how much heat increase i could expect?

Chris, your tank looks great! Making that stand took some true craftsmanship. Did you make the piece of wood trim across the top of the tank too? I'm looking to upgrade from my 46 bow to a 54 corner so I am getting some ideas. Thanx

Matt

Thanks Matt.

I did make the top piece as well as the main stand. The top piece isn't attached to anything yet. It falls if I lean on it. I need to remedy that.

Here are some pics of my 92. Good to see we have a thread started. These tanks can be pretty tricky with the small space we have available.

I have a de 400 watt coralvue pendant MH. Run a chiller. I have an automatic top off reservoir and sump/fuge combo under my tank. Will take pics later. Nothing too nice anyway. I really want to get a calcium reactor but I don't have any room at all and can't plumb into the basement b/c my tank is on my 3rd floor. Might have to make a cabinet to sit beside the tank.

FWIW
Sara did finally get her tank to be more quiet than I originally had it. She did the tube and valve set up and it works great.
She also added the basket to keep the critters out.
She also has upgraded her lighting big time with 2-250HQI 10K Blueline bulbs and PFO pendant. In additon VHO lighting.

Sara will have to get updated pics up. Basement pics too.

Sooo glad to see this thread! Thanks for all the dialogue and diligence with your individual trials and tribulations. I too have a 92 corner. I have it in the front room of my clinic so i must have the glass on the tank, which prevents crumbsnatchers from throwing their crumbs in, "Please dont feed the fish" doesnt go over well with 4 yr olds. I have worked with the lighting issue alot, as hanging lights in the area that im working with is close to impossible, so i originally put on a 36inch coralife powercompact with a 95w actinic and a 95w regular, with a 30inch coralife powercompact 50/50 blend with two 65w bulbs. just ordered from premium aquatics (Jeremy is amazing and they matched marine depots price) two Sunpod lighting systems. I ordered a 36in, dual MH 150's, with a 20inch for behind with a single 150. They work because they are only 8.5 inches wide. I will uses the "feet" that come with them and modify them to be balanced. I will have 450W toall. Not too much but 130 or so more than before and with the good penetration of the MH it should reach the depths of the 92 much, much better. I currently have my PC sitting right on the glass. My temp runs at 80degrees all the time, even with the lights off at night. I am planning to add fan down under to my 25 gallon refugium and hope that the heat from the MH sitting 5-6inches off the tank with be less or the same as the major heat that comes off the PC sitting right on the glass. We shall see. Anyways, it is like finding a lost tribe of people that finally speak your language so that is why im rambling.

92 gallon corner with overflow

I have five 1200 power heads.

25 gallon refugium with lots of live rock, miracle mud that i dont change, and lots and lots of caluerpa (hasnt ever gone sexual, but i dont have any Chaeto sources up here in anchorage),

Post refugium i go to a 1200 pump which then splits into a Aqua C 120 skimmer with a large overflow canister. THe other part of the t goes back to the tank.

130 lbs of mostly Marshall island ( and yes i am concerned about radiation but i havent found anyone that has a Geiger counter to check)

I dont do a deep sand be because of my concern for trapping all the detritus as i tend to overfeed. So beautiful white sand up front.

Fish-
Two true percula clowns
two small yellow gobies
one lovely blue tang
one potter angel, shes my favouite
one flame hawkfish
one bicolor blenny
two small green chromis
one sand siftin dimaond goby
cleaner wrasse

twenty scarlet hermits
10 turbo snails
20 Narsarius
20 cerith
10 bumble bees snails
2 cleaner shrimp
2 pepermint shrimp
2 black ridgid stars that only come out at night and eat detrius.
1 glorious fighting conch

Corals-
blasstamussa
bubble tip annemome
bubble coral
Zooanth
candy cane coral

a few others, will add more with more lighting.

Just glad to join the thread. I have never posted any pictures, so i will try once my lighting is in. Thanks for all the input.

THanks! Jason Harmon

Hey Jason!

Good to hear from you.

Where do you have the 1200 powerheads and where do they point? I've been thinking I should have gone with something a little less powerful. Three of my four are aiming at glass because the flow is too strong directly.

Looking forward to pictures.

How's the bubble tip anemone doing? I'm thinking of one for myself (and Phil and Don (Ocellaris Clowns)). Has it been difficult to keep? Any special needs or words of warning?

TIA,
Chris
