lighting on a 30g

yeah... thats what i think this thread was turning into, is a debate between MH vs T5 when i personally feel givin the list of corals planned for this tank, both would be overkill and a less expensive lighting setup would do just fine.

nah, I wouldnt say that. I suggest T5s or halide based on the tank dimensions and what the person wants to keep. Given this tank's dimensions, I wouldnt suggest T5s. Given what the person wants to keep, a 150watt halide would be my pick. Besides, the penetration of T5s (or more their coverage) would melt alot of the shrooms, etc. A halide casts more shadows and diminishes more with depth...perfect for low light corals down below and around the corners, and perhaps some higher light corals in the center...like frogspawn, hammer, or toadstool...or an anemone. No doubt about it...the halide would be the way to go. I would say it would be much better than a PC fixture as well...PCs spread out the light too much...not enough shadows for shrooms to retreat to.

i see what you are saying. the dimensions of a 29g would favor a point source light rather than linear. i havnt had a problem with my PCs and shrooms yet, but i get what your saying.

Now, if this was a 30L (36x13x16), or a 33L (48x13x12)...pretty much something at least 3' long, if not 4'...then I would be suggesting T5s...only 2-3 bulbs at most (to not melt anything).
