Lighting-Starting Over

I read where some people have trouble with coral bleaching when running T5s - is that something directly related to bulb selection, fixture(ballast/reflectors) or both?

Have you that run T5s had any trouble with bleaching?

IMO, this is most likey a result of having changing lights over to something more powerful than what the corals had been under previously. This can happen when changing to any form of light that has a higher output of what the corals in the tank had been living under or accustomed to.

Agreed, there are lots of choices these days too. For things I have read and from my experience the UVL Super Actinic beats out the Geiesmann(I think it has like 25% more par or more). I am running 2 of the Giesmann Aquablue Plus's( it is a 60/40 bulb and looks pretty white to my eye)and 1 of the UVL Super Actinics and I like the look.

For blue bulbs though seems like many like to throw at least one of the Actinic + by Geismann. It is a bright blue bulb which spikes at I think 460nm where a regular Actinic is at 420nm. Personally I dont care for it unless supplmenting white halides or running with 6500K T5's as it is too blue for my liking.

Are both bulbs available for my unit?

Hi,

If you are running a closed hood over your 75 gal. tank be careful of heat issues. I am running 2-175W MH over my tank in a vented hood along with 2-110w VHO bulbs. My tank does get a tad warm in the Summer months. 250W MH might overheat your tank unless you hang them as open air lights or very seriously vent your hood(like aircraft propeller fans). Just my 2c worth.
Looks like LED bulbs will be the light of the future.

I think people underestimate T5s with good reflectors and don't acclimate corals to their new lights.

Yes... You can get any of the 3 bulbs offere from UVL, 4 from Geismann, GE 6500K(very bright bulbs but have a hint of yello as they are a 6500K bulb) as well as bulbs from Current and ATI among others. As long as they are 54 watt T5 bulbs you are good

sorry to hijack the thread but this is the result im getting with NO T5 bulbs 2-10,000K and 2-460nm actinic

You found my other thread! You never did answer my question on the other thread. You do ask a good question here. If I had to guess I would think you couldn't add the reflectors since the unit has one big built in reflector already on it. That is just a geuss though.

There is not enough room for the reflectors really. The bulbs need about twice the distance apart they are or so to be able to fit them in
