You probley posted this and I just missed it, how much of a water change do you do in a tank this size on a weekly or biweekly basic?

I will do a 50G water change on a weekly basis...

My SW mixing tank holds 65G, but I will just fill it up to 50G - about 10% of the system's total water volume (including the sumps).

Thats going on my list for my 375g Build. That is awesome how you can control certain functions with your phone or the internet. (Technology is amazing isn't it?)

EdandSandy Water system, LL version

EdandSandy Water system, LL version

Here is the roughed in water management system which I started last evening. This is pretty much the final form, though I might route the saltwater outflow switchable to either or both sumps... I'm still thinking about that one...

Overall view of the system:
H20final03.jpg

I need 5 gallon jars of RO/Di and saltwater from time to time, and my version has little filling stations for either on the front of the system...

Detail of the suction side:
H20final1.jpg

And the outflow side:
H20Final02.jpg

A quick study of the valve configurations shows how the single pump can be used to pump out of one tank into the other, or to circulate water in one tank or the other, or to pump saltwater into the sump(s).

Here are the pipes that attach to the bulkhead with a true union inside each tank. These pipes pushe water to the bottom of the tank, where a 90 degree elbow turns the water in a clockwise direction.

The saltwater tank (left) will also contain a modified MaxiJet 1200 pointed toward the surface to give extra mixing to the saltwater solution...

Thanks again to EdandSandy and Glassreef for their inspirational build threads and all the ideas they so willingly shared...

Tomorrow I'll tear everything down, slap several coats of polyurethane on the plywood and ut it all together again. We will run the obligatory freshwater leak test under pressure before putting the system on line for next weekend's water change...

Ok, so before I get out the purple primer and glue, what have I overlooked?

Will it mix in the salt and do the water changes for you also? LOL I know there are systems out there that will...but they are super expensive I'm sure

Do I look like the director of the Jenks Aquarium??? :D

It will turn the pump on and off, but I couldn't afford those electric valves...

LOL...Add this to your christmas list.

"The machine changes water at a rate that I set. It monitors the water salinity with a conductivity meter and adjusts it accordingly. No mixing, no checking specific gravity or temperature, no draining or dumping water." You just add salt and walk away..

I'm probably a little thick but I can't follow the flow on that plumbing. Where is the in-pipe from the tank? Or is the system separate? I thought the idea was to run two tanks, one of which runs with the system and the other for mixing so you just flip a ball valve and flow goes from tank 1 to tank 2 with the new water. And Tank 1 can then be drained.

Maybe I'm thinking of someone else's system and not edandsandy's.

I received an inquiry about where to purchase the threaded rods I used for the light rack/rail assembly.

They are available at Home Depot in the hardware section - back with the aluminum and steel stock. They are 5/16" threaded rods, available pre-cut in two-foot lengths.

They screw right into the rollers. I put a 5/16" nut in the roller as a precaution and for extra strength...

thank you for the reply. went to home depot to check them out today. now i need to order the tracks. thanks, tom

Wow... simply amazing build! I just spent the past hour or two going through (skimming) and I've got to say I'm really impressed!

I will be tagging along to see where this goes from here. Very interested to see your progress!~

very very nice build thread. Keep up the great work, cant wait to see it encased in wood and finished.

Me, too. I just hope the wood frame I built will work as planned... a COMAS friend, manitou74, dropped off a router last night so I can make some slight modification to the frame. If the mod works, I should be able to get the frame mounted to the wall above the tank opening tonight...

Welcome!

Welcome!

Welcome aboard, Dave's Reef! Come back often. Make suggestions, ask questions, make yourself at home. While the tank is installed and running, there is still so much to do... ;)

How is it possible I never heard of this product before? Thanks for the link!

You know, I looked closely at their website, and I never found a price tag anywhere... imagine that!

Maybe if I win the lottery... ;)
