That's what I like - a reefer who does his research! :D

I'll PM you my secret recipe, but the basic deal is to marinate the slabs in a Jumbo zipper bag for 4 hours, turning the bag occasionally to assure good coverage. Smoke with hickory and apple wood for about six hours at 225 degrees in a Cookshack or Smokin' Tex electric smoker...Move an aquarium and stand while waiting.
When you twist the bone and the rib moves easily in the meat, slice and serve with sides and copious amounts of barley pop... ;)

electric smoker????

Wow NICE TUNE!

I have had Reef Octopus recirculating skimmers before this Orca - I learned some secrets about tuning in contrary skimmers from the Reef Octopus... the Orca is a real pleasure...

In a few months, I may upgrade it to the "pro" version, with the spongebobby impeller, taller neck and larger collection cup, but right now, I'm pretty happy...

ANNIVERSARY

ANNIVERSARY

Yesterday was the two month anniversay of the begiining of planning for our tank build...

We have so many people to thank for their hard work, advice and input in the tank project!

It's hard to believe that the new tank is settled in our new display wall.

We hope you enjoy our thread, will leave comments and come back often.

The next projects:

1.) Enclose the tank frame in above and below the wall opening.
2.) Install Tunze ATO and Kalk dispenser
3.) Fire up the closed loop (fingers crossed)
4.) Build the water change system
5.) Install and program Neptune Systems Apex controller
6.) Install CA reactor and RSM ozonizer

Other than that, not much will be happening here... :D

Thanks!

would 10 ish be acceptable

Sure.

Hopefully I'll be working on the trim surrounding the tank and stand when you get here... I am expecting good weather on Saturday so I can have my manly power tools out in the back yard to cut paneling and trim...

I just spent 3+ hours going through your tank build and it is unbelievable. I have never seen anything like this before. Every detail was well planned and the tenacity to get the project from concept to (near) completion was outstanding. I think the most amazing part was the speed at which the project came together with very few hiccups. Tank you for sharing your build and am very much looking forward to keeping up with your thread. Shoot I have to stay on my game and read nightly or I might fall 3 or 4 pages behind! Congratulations!

Progress

Progress

We completed the trim rough-in around the stand, but I am experiencing design issues with the section above the tank...I don't like its sturdiness (or lack of)... going back to the drawing board... plus I may wait on my trim expert, peaceinusa, to be available so I do the job right!

In the meantime, I have installed the Tunze Osmolator ATO, and the RO/DI filter is currently filling the ATO reservoir. I won't fill the Kalkwasser dispenser until I have a chance to test out the Osmolator.

Since I can't work on the tank cover today, directed my attention to the edandsandy water change system. Photos of the bare bones later...

Will do my first water change on the new tank (manually) later today. Mixing 50G of fresh saltwater since last night...

OK, back to work.

ATO by Tunze

ATO by Tunze

I have used the Tunze Osmolator in my tanks since the beginning. We'll see if the Osmolator is up to the challenge of a 500G system...

Mounted the Osmolator controller on the back of the tank (next to one of the Vortech controllers)

The reservoir is a heavy duty 27G tub which fits perfectly (dumb luck) in the only available space in the stand. The tub is filled directly from the RO/DI filter by turning a valve at the filter:

Here is the tub with the "cat hat" in place...(kitties love nice cool RO/DI water!) :D

The Osmolator pump and Kalkwasser dispenser:

Not a very good picture, but the dual Osmolator sensors are mounted on the side of the acrylic sump's center chamber. When the water lowers in the sump, the lower sensor detects that it is not touching water, and the Osmolator will slowly pump kalkwasser enriched RO/DI to the sump. A float switch above acts as an emergency cut-off.

Building the water system...

Building the water system...

Here is the beginning of our version of edandsandy's handy-dandy water "management" system:

In the beginning, the layout - our pump will be located between the two tanks... just fits our room position:
071802.jpg

We started by laying out the suction side of the pump plumbing. We are using a Blueline 40HD-X pump. Just one we had left over from our tank moves:
071809.jpg

The saltwater tank will also be able to gravity fill 5 gallon jars if needed for other tanks' water changes:
071808.jpg

The RO/DI side will also be able to gravity fill 5 gallon jars for top off or other needs:
071810.jpg

...and this is the way it looks so far:
071807.jpg

Next I'll be drilling holes for two 1" bulkheads in the top of the tanks -for the Blueline to pump into... then plumbing the pump outflow into either storage tank as well as a sump for direct water changes.

More later.

Nice progress.

How are the tank mates doing?

The black/white ocellaris won the "battle" for the toadstool... the orange/white pair are waiting for Tangaroa to provide them with a home...

Tangaroa is working on it... should have one by Monday...

We added a Copperband Butterfly last week and a Coral Beauty yesterday. There is so much action in the tank, it is breathtaking...

Just finished reading the thread, things are looking nice.
Question, What containers are you using for the RO and Saltwater mixing?

Man I wish I had a "FISH ROOM." Are you part of the COMAS club?

Yes, the fish (equipment) room is very nice. I can splash a little saltwater without guilt.. Having the equipment outside the display room is great - very quiet.

I am a member of COMAS - in fact the 19 folks who helped me move the tank and stand on June 20 were all COMAS members. A great group of guys and gals! See: www.mycomas.com

Thanks again for checking in.
