Lily Dale

I actually haven't personally been there, but I had a Great Aunt that was a registered medium there for a few years and several family members that have been there multiple times. My Great Aunts gifts were far too uncanny and specific to be meer coincidence.

I actually just got back to Rochester today, Ive been in Buffalo for the last week and wasn't in the yard for the couple weeks before that. I'll check them out tomorrow ;)

I think that I posted this before....

but I think it's time we had a few beers together.

I've been there once before. Lily Dale is the exact opposite of what most would expect. I walked in expecting a good laugh but truth be told I was very surprised after talking to a psychic. I went in revealing nothing but my first name and the woman knew more about me (and my family) then I would ever think. It was a very enlightening experience. I wasn't even charged for my session which only made me believe in what I was told even more.

Some can argue that it's "made-up", but like Ryan mentioned, your opinion may change someday. Check it out! :)

We'll have to do that Gary, Im up for it any Monday Tuesday or Wednesday night. Thursday is go home day, so Im pretty much looking to head for the hills any time afternoon.

I'd like to see the guys at Mythbusters take this one on. Might make for an interesting show. My mind tells me that it's a load of horse stuff though I cannot completely convince myself to dismiss the plausibility of it. I'd have to say that even with a highly "gifted" medium that I'd likely remain quite skeptical in the absence of any scientific evidence.
:hmm3:

beers are cheaper at my place and you can see the aquarium. How about Tuesday (tomorrow) afternoon?
If not... maybe some other time but Tuesday afternoon would work really well for me.
I'll PM you my info.

That sounds like a plan to me Gary, Im free anytime after 530 or 6ish, by the time I get cleaned up after work.

Penn and Teller have a show called "Bull ****" that takes on all these types of things. The show is obviously biased, but is pretty good entertainment no matter which side of the fence you're on.

A little off topic but they did an episode on organic food where they cut the same banana in half and told people one half was a regular banana and the other one was organic. It was really funny watching people talk about how much better the "organic" half tasted :lmao:

if you've ever read my posts on RC you know that I'm one of the world's biggest skeptics.
I need good scientific proof and accurate ID's :)

imagine a forum where everyone kept an open mind. (I know it's not possible because I'm here and I'm a skeptic!)

the banana thing is a ridiculous comparison to what this thread is all about.

I wasnt making a comparison at all. Just a humorous note about the show! (hence the "off topic" remark)

I have been there and it was great. If you are "into" this kind of thing, you will truely enjoy it.

Re: Penn and Teller... They did the same thing with fancy spring water. They filled a bunch of name brand water bottles with water from the garden hose and had people at a very fancy restaurant "taste" them. Snobs suck.

I have seen ALOT....i mean ALOT of amazing things. I personally loved going there as a child...i really felt "connected" somehow. But there is always that risk of running into a scam or two, however, I believe that there are some VERY STRICT guidelines and "inspections" of the individuals that work out of or reside at Lily Dale.

Just as an added insight...i have been abroad on missions trips and have actually seen people regain sight, walk again...it is NEVER out of the realm of possibility that we as human beings are capable of a great many things that are out of our grasp of explanation.

I'm pretty synical about most things, but I've seen and heard things from a person that is a trusted family friend since her birth. She has nothing to gain from her "feelings" or "signals". The stuff she pulls out of thin air is nothing less than miraculous. It's no party trick and she is frankly embarrassed by a lot of it. But it is what it is. You either buy it, or you don't. I'm smart enough to know I don't know everything and there just MIGHT be some stuff out there we can't explain.

No doubt there are charletons. It'd be my guess that many of the higher profile folks are at least embellishing their so called skills. There are those that prey on people who have experienced significant loss. Dispicable. This only takes away from those that are truly talented, or really good guessers for those nay sayers out there.

This will always be a divided topic. And someone will always say "why don't they pick the lottery numbers everyweek and make millions???" To each his own, I spose. But from what I've seen....it don't work like dat.

Not to stay off subject Gary, My 2 friends that went to Lily Dale had a tremendous time and said they would do it again in a heart beat.

It truly is a circular topic...

The defender will always say "It was a life changing experience"
The detractor will then say "You've been fooled"
The defender repsonds "You dont understand"

And so on and so forth, until the end of time :D

Agree with that J... except I think in order for one to be able to judge they need to have walked a mile in different shoes. It's a very blind decision to form an opinion on something without opening yourself up to all aspects at some point in the process. I'm keeping an open mind on it. There was a guy at a shop on Monroe Ave here that "read my cards" and he was so far off base it was apparent he was just there to amuse and entertain. The reason I don't rule it out entirely, because I have witnessed sisters knowing something was wrong with the other and calling to find out what even though separated by hundreds of miles. People saying they got a horrible feeling about a relative only to find out the person passed away. Yep, some are certainly full of it. I have a hard time rationalizing how all of them should be discarded though.

I'll have to take a trip to check this place out at some point in the future.

The people that dismiss all of them do it on a matter of principle It's something that doesn't jive with their take on life and I can understand the sentiment. But that's the difference between overtly scientifically minded people and more open minded people. One opinion isn't better than the other, but questioning people that dismiss psychic phenomena on principle is the same as questioning people who believe

Interestingly enough... I think open minded people are among those we can thank for much of our science. With this hobby, I base a lot of actions on scientific evidence. With the bigger picture, however, science has rewritten itself a few times over the ages as we advance into being able to research things that were previously beyond our reach. Questioning people and beliefs is a very natural human process. Judging others or trying to "convert them", however, is a great folly. Everyone has the right to come to their own decisions, whatever they may be.

Totally agree... Maybe scientific vs open minded wasn't the best way to categorize it. It should have been "stubbornly scientific minded" vs "loopy open minded" with most people falling in the middle :p
