I'll tell you what. I will ponder this thread tomorrow when I am delivering my own form of lock jaw to the resident lionfish population off the coast of SC. I figure a swift delivery of spring steel through there heads will definitely give them a case of lock jaw or more to the point...... hole in the head disease!

Today was one of the days I skip feeding so I'm not sure if the lion is any better or worse. Otherwise it's acting like it always has.

I hit up an lfs today to pick up the vitamarin-c and I also picked up some vitamarin-m. Once I confirm with you guys that it is cool to dose both then my plan is a little more solid. I ended up running a bit behind schedule tonight: 1:30+ round trip to this particular lfs and I got lost in there looking at their new livestock (which is where I stumbled upon a little barberi) and I had another stop to make on the way home so I didn't get back home until 10 ish. Long story short I didn't get the hospital tank set up tonight but I've got the water mixed and ready and all the equipment ready to go. Tommorrow evening the antennata will be in his temporary new home.

Hey bud, you need to take it easy. Name calling is beneath us all. Pterois volitans is an invasive species in our waters. I certainly don't want to highjack this thread, but all I was doing was trying to bring some levity to the situation and maybe also bring some awareness as well. Mea culpa if I offended thee.

Actually, I hadn't heard of it. I need to replace my Vitamin C, so I'll order some M as well. Awesome!

The antennata made the trip to his hospital tank without any hiccups last night and has settled in nicely.

I dosed vitamarin-c and vitamarin-m in the proper quantities as per the instructions. Lets hope it has a positive effect.

Another silly question here: does carbon remove the vitamins from the water?

an update here...

The antennata went into the hospital tank last thursday. I dosed vitamarin-c and vitamarin-m. Saturday night I threw a ghost shrimp in and received an immediate hunting response from the lion. The problem is that the lion doesn't seem able to open it's mouth. In fact as of this (monday) morning the lion was STILL stalking the ghost shrimp. I haven't seen it come anywhere close to a successful strike because I'm pretty sure it can't open it's mouth.

As I mentioned before it has some kind of protrusion sticking out between it's gill plates on the bottom of it's head. A new observation is that it doesn't seem to be able to shut it's gills all the way so it looks kinda like it isn't breathing properly. Not rampant but noticably increased gill movement frequency.

Has anyone heard of anything like this?

A tumor never ocurred to me. I'm going to try to get a picture of it tonight though I don't imagine it'll be very easy to tell what I'm talking about. The lion has been up against something most times when I've seen it so you can't really see how much this mysterious bump protrudes.

Maybe it had a broken jaw somehow and it hasn't healed correctly? I'm just tossing stuff out there right now.

Ok, I did my best with my cellphone camera. I added some ghost shrimp to try to take videos of it trying to feed but now it won't even go after the shrimp. See the bulge I'm talking about under it's gillplates? What it looks like to me is that that part of the jaw is supposed to be flat but it seems like it buckled and the back end of it is bulging out.

Blech. Thoughts?

Oh.... my. :-( Wow.

That's been either broken and it healed wrong or is presently dislocated/broken.

I don't think you are going to be able to do much for that. I've never seen it so severe.
