Lionfish X Three

So i ve been mourning the death of my first lionfish. It was a beautiful radiata that was banged up from shipping and didnt make it:sad2:

I was very upset and then i thought to myself what could have prevented this. The only thing i can think of that could have made a huge difference was the shipping. The Fed ex delivery service in my area is sub par on a good day. But having a live fish that is sensitive to shipping roughhandled by frustrated employees because of christmas and all the extra work, probably wasnt a smart thing on my part and is something i wish i had forseen.

But now that the christmas rush is through, i have an order from LA for 3 lionfish!!! One Pterois Mombassae One Pterois Radiata and One Pterois Antennata!!! I am sooooo excited. They should be here on wednesday. In the mean time i have been looking over The Lionfish Lair. It is kindof all i can do because i am recovering from knee surgery and am going crazy just watching tv all day!!! I am so impressed by Greg And Rene's dedication to this addiction(cough) hobby. Their site is outstanding. I hope they are reading this. Since i have no critter photos to share and since i have nothing else to do i did drawing of a lionfish from i picture i found on The Lionfish Lair. It is of Greg and Rene's Antennata lion.

Sux about the Lion's death... Radiatas just don't do well in shipping. RIP to him :(
On the other hand, you've got a lot to be excited for... Three Lions!? It just doesn't get any better than that!
That's an AWESOME picture! You're very talented.
 
Don't beat yourself up over the Radiata, they don't handle being shipped very well, and even if they do it's still tough for them to acclimate. I just bought one at the lfs that looked perfect, but still died a few days later. They're just really tough to get settled.

Good luck with the new ones! That's going to be an awesome tank!! They will look great together. What size tank?

Thank You all for all for the compliments. The lions will be going in a 100 gallon marineland cube. I really am looking forward to them and wednesday cant come soon enough!!! At the moment i am making preparations to set up a 5 gallon bucket with an air stone to fill with ghost shrimp until i can convert them to frozen. On the subjest of ghost shrimp, i have never enriched them or gut loaded a live food as these are my first predatory fish. What should i use to boost their nutritional value? I was thinking of using marine pellets and/or some frozen brine/small/mysis shrimp. Is this a suitable diet for the ghost shrimp? I am also looking for any other type of live food that will be easy and to find locally and not too expensive. I know that goldfish, and there relatives are a no no. Im trying to remember the other no no fish. Is it rasboras or rosy reds? Anyway, any tips on feeding or useful information would be much appreciated.

My plan is to get them settled in and get a feeding response with the ghost shrimp and then use the method greg and rene have invented with the stick and the monofilament. What are your thoughts on enriching the frozen food? I am really interested in this because to me it seems it would be really easy to enhance their diet once their on frozen but would it be too much of a good thing?

Congrats on the new lions! I feed my ghosties formula 1 pellots and then feed them to whatever I need to. Flake food would work too once it sinks.

As for the radiata, I had one on hold at the lfs and it didn't even make it there. They are a tough acclimate, but LA should be good for you. I will most likely order my next one from them too.

Thank You all for your kind comments. Unfortunately for now it is more like lionfish squared =( Liveaquaria couldnt ship my whole order so they just shipped the antennata and the radiata. The mombassa apparently wasnt in stock. What confuses me is is the fact that when i went to look at the availability of the lionfish the day i got the email saying the mombassa wasnt in stock, on the site it was instock. I have been looking at it frequently and to this moment it states it is indeed in stock. I am a little frustrated and confused. What do you think happened?

Any way, my two lions came in around 3 today and they are doing good so far. They have shown no interest in eating, which i figured. The radiata doesnt look nearly as banged up as the last one so im hoping it will do well.
I tried for so long to get some pictures of them to share with you but they are still hiding just out of reach of my camera.
I do have one picture to share of the antennata which i caught i quick pic while it was out before it went into hiding.

So i have been working extremely hard and exercising abnormal patience when it come to getting pics of my new lions. They however seem as reluctant as ever to come out and greet the camera. Which is a little disappointing since i got this camera for christmas and have been itching to try it out!

The antennata seems to be a little more bold when it comes to showing himself. The radiata is still being a pain and hiding where i cant get a decent pic of him.

Oh well, here are 2 pics i took today. After seeing these pics i now understand how a lionfish can be adorable=)

Hopefully (keep your fingers crossed) the radiata is just going to be fashionably late to this photoshoot lol.

I do have a question. The radiata arrived at my house in good condition. It had great coloration and everything. This afternoon i fed the tank and the other fish went crazy as usual and they kinda spooked the lions. The antennata seemed fine right away. It was just a little freaked. But the radiata went and bolted to the opposite end of the tank and looked VERY pale in coloration. It stayed like this for about an hour and i just went to check on it and it was back to normal coloration and looking vibrant.

Is this a normal reaction or should i be worried?
