List of red sea fish.......

Hi Folks,

Giving the idea of a red sea biotope some serious thought for my new 240 (8'x2'x2'). I have been searching around for a "list" as it were of red sea fish - so far my "list" comprises:

Emporer Angel
Regal Angel
Asfur Angel
Maculosus Angel

Purple Tang
Sohal Tang
red sea sailfin
naso

Semilarvatus B'fly
Red backed B'fly
Red Sea Heniochus

Anthias
Chromis

Whats that little purple guy called again.... kind of like a gramma?

Obviously I do not intend keeping all these fish - just thinking outloud about what there is to choose from. If there is any other fish species that you feel is worthy of consideration, please add to the list - along with comments if you wish.

What about the Red Sea Bicinctus Clownfish? They have a really gorgeous yellow coloration and get some nice size to them. They are being bred now commercially and are more obtainable than they used to be but are still uncommon.

I think you were talking about the Fridmani pseudochromis. Great fish.
 
Hey there Matt, here's a list by Bob Fenner on Red Sea aquarium fish. I think thats a great idea for a biotype aquarium. Are you thinking reef or a fish only?

I've kept the Asfur and maculosis angels, purple tang, and the sankey's pseudochromis, all great Red Sea fish. The Red Sea has a bunch of great pseudos like the sankey's, orchid, sunrise, springers, and the neon dottyback. dont forget the Red Sea racoon butterfly, much better looking than the regular racoon. In a tank that size I would do a school of squamipinnis or lyretail anthias for sure, one of the commonest fish in the Red Sea.

You have dozens more to go.....just google it....too many to list....if i throw a couple at ya you are still gonna need 50 more
 
I have several red sea fish in my reef tank as I also wanted to do a red sea biotope. I cheated a little and have a few fish that are not endemic to red sea but most of the fish are from Saudi Arabia.

Here are the red sea fish that I have:

(1) Sohal Tang
(4) Puple Tangs
(1) Asfur Angel
(1) Eightline Flasher Wrasse
(9) Lyretail Anthias
(1) Red Sea Mimic Blenny
(2) Red Sea Regal Angels

I have been considering a Red Emperor Angel but I am afraid that it will fight with the Asfur.

Some other options are Golden Butterflyfish (C. Semilarvatus) and Red Sea Zebra Angel (Genicanthus Caudovittatus).

JonTarutis - yep, guess a good idea is hard to keep down! Truth is that I'd like to try a large reef tank, but at the moment (and for the foreseeable future) my budget would not stretch to all the equipment that I'd need (or want). So in the mean time, a red sea biotope is the ultimate for me - along with a carribean / western atlantic biotope. By the way - thats a pretty exhaustive list!

Wrasseguy - yeah, I have to do some reading up on flasher and fairy wrasse - I believe there are quite a few from te red sea.

JamesJR - you predicted my next question..... what clownfish could I try..... gonna search that now.

Kahuna (Mike) - good to hear form you. I wouldn't go as far to say teh tank wil be FO, rather that I will not have corals to begin with until I get the gear to start the corals in a big way....ie lights, reactor etc. definitely gonna look at the pseudos, and also the lyretail anthias.

Angel*Fish - thanks for the recommendation - definitely on the short list!

Serioussnaps - its more a list of recommendations that I am looking for really.

Triggerfish - thanks for the input - nice triggers on your gallery - 600 gal tank.... I see a vision of a semilarvatus school!!!

Thanks for all the input folks. I suppose ultiamtely I al looknig to extablish a core of fish that will ultimately be reef safe in the future. I may include one or two choice species like a pair of semilarvatus - if I go reef I'll just have to trade them. But I am open to all suggestions as nothing is cast in stone yet.

If you keep an anemone for the bicinctus clowns it is fortunate that bubble tip anemones are a natural host for them.
 
Oh man how could I have forgotten the Red Sea mimic blenny and bicinctus clowns, some of the best clowns available for a reef and the coolest blenny ever.
 
I'd really like a bubble tip and a pair of clowns - that would be great.

I suppose I cannot set up a proper red sea biotope if I want to keep corals - you simply can't get "red sea" corals in my neck of the woods. Guess I'll have to just settle for red sea fish and corals from elsewhere.
 
I have just got back from diving in the red sea and have bought a leaflet containing popular fish, I could scan it for you if you would like.
 
jakealien - if its not too much bother, that would be cool. I'd be interested in seeing the leaflet even if I were planning a red sea tank.
 
Ok, I will scan it tomorrow for you, the scanner isn't linked up to this computer and I lost the drivers for it so I'll do it tomorrow.
 
I wouldn't worry too much about the corals being native or not as there are lots of them that are either hard to distinguish from their cousins living in the indo pacific or are even found in the red sea and indo pacific.
 
If not already mentioned, I think a school of cardinals with an urchin would look pretty neat. And I second the zebra angelfish pair.

I gotta admit, thats just about the coolest puffer I have ever seen!

Trying to stay away from anything that will eat snails. I want to keep a decent number of snails to keep algae at bay.

yeah, teh urchin and cardinals would be cool - will look into it.
