Live BlackWorms: Best Fish and LPS Food Ever?

you guys are very lucky, absolutely no one sells black worms in canada!

I've never been able to find live ones either. A couple of years ago we did a group buy for frozen blackworms from California and my fish loved them. I haven't been able to find anyone who wants to do another buy. I did manage to find a company in BC that sells freeze dried blackworms and I've been using them for about a year. The fish seem to like them, but I don't know how nutritious they are.

Thanks for the offer, but my wife is very ill and I really don't have the time or inclination to start culturing live worms these days.

I soak the freeze dried ones in a jar with a few thawed cubes of Mysis, plankton, roe, etc so I guess that they absorb some nutrients and flavours. In any case, my fish devour them. (yes, I did get them from JLAquatics)

I've tried to get all of the LFS in Ottawa to bring in the frozen ones, but no one is interested; the demand just isn't there.

im tring freeze dried loose from Australia ,soak them for a bit ,fish are liking them,i also have freeze dried cubed from California but haven't tried them yet

Instead of starting a new thread, I figured it's better to just resurrect this beauty.

Shorty story:

I just picked up some BW to feed my new Waitei anthias that have not eaten yet since I got them. They were acquired from Live Aquaria and are going through day two of the TTM. Before I fed the Waitei, I figured I would throw some in my DT. Needless to say...my fish sucked them down like a shot of tequila.

The kicker is that when my auto fish feeder kicked off a few hours later, my clown fish spit out the pellets, which he has been eating for over a year. Crazy. Now I am wondering if this is going to be an ongoing thing. If so...that means I am going to have to build a PAUL B feeder, and join the Live Black Worm Club.

Not complaining by no means....this just reinforces that the BW are definitely a plus to incorporate into your feeding regiment.

Oh yes.... BTW....the Waitei are now eating. SCORE!!

I give blackworms as "dessert". Main course is my usual mix of frozen, roe, and pellets. Then they get some live worms. They still eat everything, but they definitely all like the worms the best, which is why I feed those last.

But I don't have anthias and only feed once a day. So my fish are definitely hungry by feeding time and are not picky when they see food that isn't alive.

I am a huge fan of live and fresh food for my corals and fish. Between black worms and white worms, cut up clams, shrimp, fish, and squid, my animals have never been healthier. I wish more people would feed their fish quality foods instead of flakes and pellets. It is not that demanding, either time or financially, to keep the fish well fed. It pays off in the long run.

Anyone feed red worms/big crawler type worms if they can't find black worms local.

Corey

I don't but have read that people use earthworms in food that they make? I have also read about people using banana and other food you wouldn't think to feed your marine fish

Earthworms are very good and some fish love bananas but you should freeze them first. For some reason they like them better that way. My Moorish Idol and batfish loved them but not all fish will eat them.

Any other things that are at the grocery from the fruit section or other that you would suggest feeding?

I had a worm compost that use a species of earth worm that are tiny. Thinner than pencil lead and only about 2 inches long. Next time when I have a hard to feed fish that need, I may try these worms. Can't go wrong. Easy to keep alive and you can order a small amount 100 of them for $14. If somebody try this please let all of us know how it turn out. I would not suggest continue feeding with non marine type food continuously and long term, but short term in a pinch, I don't wee why not, especially if the alternative is no food or not eating enough.

What an old interesting thread. Wonder if Paul B is still in the hobby. Only thing I can get my blond naso to eat right now is black worms. He goes crazy for them. Will not touch anything else. Just curious how everyone else is doing feeding black worms
