Live rock complicated scenario.

ok, ill run the skimmer wet chief, i just came back to my tank this afternoon, alll the major gunk, sticky stuff, huge huge bubbles, stopped...my skimmer is skimming back to normal...all i have is now 3 shrimp in a fish net tie wrapped in it so they wont come out....i only got .5 ammonia since yesterday and gonna be checking everyday till it drops...So, do you guys suggest a water change after my nitrites go down and nitrates are up? and if yes...maby 25 % ok? meaning more lil ones are better then lets say one or two huge ones?

Today my tank has Ammonia at 0
Nitrites at 0
Nitrates at 20
Tank i feel cycled wayyy too fast, i dont k now if there is a wrong or right way or rather, a proper or inproper timeline of cycling. Leaving my tank running for a week, then gonna do a 25% water change and buy my first fish and some clean up crew.

There's no timeline for cycling a tank with live rock. Live rock is far too variable. Personally, after dumping all that shrimp into the system, I wouldn't worry. I'd just wait a week and do some water changes, and then start stocking slowly.

ah, I might wait a bit more, and take like 6 shrimp, cut them into like 6 pieces each(more surface area) and do the same thing in a net of some kind. If I remember correct, you used like 200 lbs dry rock, and 50 lbs Live Rock? If that is the case, you just haven't added enough ammonia. If the shrimp don't give you any ammonia in 3 days, I would throw in some flake food. You have to try and get that ammonia up, because whole shrimp won't release enough ammonia for a system that large. Especially when using such a large amount of completely dry rock. I would like to see AT LEAST 1ppm for a tank that size.

yeah, i have 300 lbs of dry rock, and i added around 50 lbs of live rock but it was cured sitting in the lfs tank, so not much die off for me in my tank.

the highest i peaked for ammonia was around 1, but with my test kit i downgraded it to .5 as i couldn't tell the difference, then nitrite was up then down almost the next day, found that strange but like how bertoni said, there is no timeline...now nitrite is 0. nitrate is 10, today.

i can see everyday more and more pods in my tank against the glass...swimming around, etc. just going to wait a week then stock very slowly and continue monitoring my levels.

ok, today was the big day.....

Bought one blood shrimp, and two ocellaris clown fish....Just started slow just incase something is off and i missed it. But fish swimming around healthy, eating some pods allready off the glass.....Thanks so much for everyones help, much appreciated. Now just waiting to make sure its all good, till i buy more in a few weeks.

hmmmm blood shrimp? Can we see a pic? A lot of shrimp, especially the non-feeder ones can be problematic. Just don't recognize that name. A lot of non-peppermint red shrimp can be problematic coral eaters.

yes jonathan, its exactly it...blood shrimp or lysmata debelius, 100% is that reef safe? my lfs said it was, so got him...

the cleaner shimps that I know of are fairly reef-safe. I have heard of almost all cleaner/reef-safe shrimp going ape on their corals at one time or another. BUT, you always hear the disasters and never hear the successes. I would say it is fine until you see it eating something. That may never happen.

yaa he never came out of a cave that he called home...hiding all this time, researched the shrimp and forums say he likes to hide more then he likes to go out lol..so there it is..now i need snails, lots of them...did i tell u guys i made my own fish food? clowns going nuts over it..

Guys is there a reason my clownfish are on the top of tank alot, is there a chance they can or will jump out? i had to put a cover over it...any ideas?

they MAY jump. They are not one of the KNOWN jumpers, but any fish given the right motivation will jump.

If they have already become accustomed to you feeding at the top, they may do it as a reaction to you being near the tank. If you want to avoid this, you may try feeding with a turkey-baster which you make sure you put down a few inches down in the water. This will make them sit mid-tank when they think they are being fed. To test this, sit like 15 ft away, within a few minutes they should start swimming lower in the tank.

ok chief, going to feed in the middle of the tank..i took a chance and took away the top cover. I wanted to ask..i seen the white lil pods in my tank.. but now i see other things infesting the glass..they almost look like baby spiders..there tiny white things wiht legs in a shape of a spider....what is that u guys know? cant take a pic, wont focus on them...

Those are a tiny species of jellyfish. They don't do any harm, really, and they tend to disappear on their own.

oh ok, jonathan...cool, thanks...i wonder, how they came about? maby eggs in live rock and they hatched? cause they just came out yesterday and today there is alllotttt more..its like they came out at the same time...not gradual.. Well, im watching to see if the clowns gona eat them, they seem interested and keep going against the glass of the tank.

They might come from the same hatch, as you suggest, but I'm not sure about that. It's a good guess, though.

tank got infested with that species of jelly fish, big time...with the magnet scraper that goes on your glass a few times a day, actually 3x a day for about 4 days there 95% gone, now a few here and there, very few...so getting rid of them myself.

Hi Theo,
I just finished reading about your new set up. Looks Great.

I noticed that you are from Toronto. I live in Stoney Creek, but work in the Toronto area (Mississauga).
I was wondering if you could tell me where you purchased your Euroreef Skimmer ?
I am setting up a new 75g and need to purchase a skimmer for it.

Thanks
Cam
