Living in san fran / san jose?

He is from Southern CA so there not problem with out of state costs. But yes, apartments are exspensive. But if you are sharing a room with someone, its not too bad.

I think San Jose State has a good engineering program. It's also close to more companies in your field. You might be able to intern to better your chances of a great job when you get out.

Since you are on the reef forum, there are probably better fish stores in the San Jose area.

Living in SF rocks. There are many many delicious restaurants with affordable food. Public transportation has its quirks, but at least we have it. The neighborhoods are ethnically diverse and you will have the opportunity to meet many friendly people (much more neighborly than San Ho). Renting a room in an apartment is cheap enough from what I hear. You can surf at Ocean Beach, or if you need more nature/hot weather, a 30 minute drive in any direction gets you there. Surprisingly, traffic within the city really isn't bad, it's commuting to/from that can be a pain but that won't be an issue if you are a student. I think most jobs here pay more than minimum wage, even for entry level retail stuff. You're not going to starve. All that being said, I'd rather the secret didn't get out how awesome it is here because I don't want anything to change. We need more fish stores though. Regarding education, if you're a natural in your field, it won't matter which school you choose, but you're only young once, so you might want to enjoy the city.

i know that you didnt ask, but i graduated from Chico state, and if youre interested in business, or construction management, or computer science its an awesome school.

the town is also great, you can get by with just a bike if you dont have a car. Its really laid back, ive been gone for less then a month and i miss it so much already

Hhehehe Darcy, I can't agree enough with some of that. Unfortunately I see new housing popping up all over the place and seeing all the open space closing up. Especially with the cities proposal that says that houses don't need ANY parking within them now. Of course this doesn't really matter for those who don't have a car, but for those of us that need to park around the city it sucks.

That's another expensive point, the Parking Nazis here are among some of the most strict in the nation, and expensive too!

It all really depends on what life style you're looking for.

Also depend on which part of the city you decide to live in. There are good areas and bad area.

If you're going to SJSU it's best to find a place nearby where it's walking distance to school (but having a car is a must regardless anywhere in NorCal) It's dense but I can't imagine myself w/o a car. Finding a parking at SJSU is a nightmare, parking ticket is like 140 bucks a semester.

Standard living either SJ or SF is going to be higher than where you're coming from. Job wise, there are more opportunity, base pay depends on where u go and what u planning on doing. (if you plan on working a car is a must)

Making 8.50/hr is definitely gonna kill you. To share a room is like $500/month, go figure after tax your income barely pays for rent. Unless you plan on flipping burgers, I think $12-13 is pretty average i think.

I hope you have someone who can help you with expenses while you're in school. Not to kill it for you, but don't expect to graduate and land yourself a high paying job and be able to afford to live anywhere here.

No Experience college grads get $30k/yr if they're lucky, find a temp or any job you can find that's related in your field while you're in school. So by the time you're done you'll have experience to show.

Even @ $50k a year would barely get you by if you're by yourself. It's pretty sad, if you ask me. If you can swing it @ some other UC other than Cali that have a lower standard living, I think you'll be a little more comfortable for you. SJSU doesn'jt have the best rep. hell everyone goes there.

Sorry to sound negative, but the truth hurt sometime.

If I remeber correctly, I think we had more people moving out rather than moving in, in the past few years.

SF definitely. You don't want to be in SJ.

Why?? I love SJ.. SF is the last place on earth I would stay. SF is nice for a day trip but I would never live there. Too many people... The house/room is like a 4x4 box. Unless you have a lot of $$ then you can get 6x6 box :D ...

Haha true date... SF is just too crowded and full of crazy taxi.

Ohhh and POT HOLES! So many bent rims. :)

Friend just showed me his new house in AZ today, his house makes my house looking like 2x2 :D

San Jose is not for single people. You'll find it extremely boring if you are single and moving from the big city like Los Angeles (remind me when I first moved up here 8 years ago). You'll love san jose once you are married with 2 kids like me.

well im not going alone. im moving with the GF and thats why i think its possible to survive in the 1 X 1 box i can afford by SFSU.

Why would you say SJSU doesnt have the best rep? Its one of the best state schools out there for anything in the technology field or graphics field.

I have to agree that I would not want to live in SF. Way too crowded, super tiny apartments, a lot of horrible drivers, bad roads, and food is exspensive. It does have its good points though, especially if you are a partier. Bars within walking distance. A lot of clubs and other things to do. But if you are moving with a GF, I doubt you'll be a swinging bachleor, so it wont matter anyways. SJ does have its share of clubs and bars, but they arent as popular as the SF ones. But SF is only 45 min away, so its great to hit up every now and then.

Unless you like cold weather, you will need to get use to the foggy, misty, and cold weather of the SFSU area. I grew up in the Richmond, Sunset, and DC (Westlake) area, there are days when you won't even see the sun. That's part of the reason why I moved out.

For the experience and a taste of something different, I'd personally choose SF. I've lived in SJ for quite some time, and it's not much different than the 'burbs you'll be leaving behind.

You'll end up in the South Bay sometime anyway with your major:lol: It's a decent place to raise a family.

Berkeley? Stanford?

Personally, I went to the University of Toronto ;)

Remember that you can also live outside of SF or SJ, though it may not be much cheaper. However, if you went to SJ, you can live in Fremont or Milpitas or somewhere that is cheaper and commute to school. Same for SF except that you'll go broke on gas and parking.

regardless of where you decide to go, I'm sure you'll have great fun and make it work.

SJSU is one of the best cal states around. its more expensive than the others too. if life is so hard in san fran then why are so many people living there? lol. im not worried about being a no experience college grad because engineering programs offer so many internships. the field is so short of workers. i personally know a mechanical engineer and thats where i am getting this from. he is also a manager of his job so im pretty sure he knows what he is talking about.

i want to go to SJSU because of all the internship programs since its right next to silicon valley. but u guys say transportation is not so great out there. how much is the expense diference from SJ to SF? like give me examples liek a soda will cost this much here and there or something.

You've got the San Francisco Bay Area. The North Bay would be the surrounding cities above SF. The East Bay would be the cities on the Oakland side of the Bridge, on down. I consider the South Bay to be Menlo Park down the Los Gatos.

You'd be in the heart to silicon valley. There are positions for engineers, but competition is fierce. It's such a popular field nowadays, that the market is oversaturated with new grads.

... and by "engineers" he means "Computer Engineers, Electrical Engineers in the computer field" and "Guys with Computer science degrees who call themselves engineers". ie; it's Silicon Valley...

Other "real" branches of engineering are probably equivalent to many other areas of the country where jobs are involved.

BA terminology... the "Peninsula" refers to (*gasp!*) the penninsula where SF is the northern tip and SJ is the bottom. Silicon Valley is basically the area from San Jose up to about Redwood City (Because Oracle is in Redwood City).

For some reason, every 5 miles yields another city! And when you get up here you'll be shell shocked when you drive by the headquarters of Apple, Oracle, Cisco, etc, etc, etc ... but the novelty will wear off.

Incidentally... you have to set up a fishtank when you get here... ;)
