Local Canopy Builders? Anyone want to build me one?

Hi folks,
I'm a very long time MARS member and mostly lurker. Even spoke at one of your meetings once about nano tanks. I need a canopy for my Oceanic 33 cube. Anyone know of a local craftsman or shop willing to build me one? I'd compensate you nicely.

Depends on how you want to configure it and what qualities you find important. Check progess on my 75g reef build thread. I'm planning some serious modding to my canopy including a DIY 12v fan array and hopefully gas struts to lift the lid and keep it open.

I'd build you one, however my wife feels that my canopy looks like a 2 year old made it. However i would rather build it than pay an exuberant amount of money to someone to build it. Give it a shot. If nothing else it's a learning experiance.

I also build one, not the greatest but it looks good, if you want I can help you build yours
here you can see a little of it

Looks good to me!

So this tank is this exact one I have.

I wouldn't need the doors like you built. Just 4 sides, with no top. I just want something to conceal the return plumbing and light fixture. Think you could do that? Any idea on price?

The dimensions are 20.5" x 18.5", and I need it 8" tall to fit the lights.

No top? Just a 'box sleeve'? Easy... That much nice oak and some corner brackets would cost around $40-$60 at Home Depot. Doesn't include stain or paint.

Here's a pic of the current state of my canopy mod on my new 75g. The middle section of the canopy is my construction to add height to the stock rig.

Woohoo. Now I just have to pick an avatar.

I plan to 'rip' down the height this weekend and add spring lifts, then cut holes for fan array, install fan array, paint, reassemble. No inside pics yet. I'll be glad to share when the canopy is rockin' though.

The secrets to nice and clean corners: Lots of patience -- But you're a reefer, you should have plenty. Real straight wood - oak is good usually. Good saw that doesn't have any slop. Any residual gap is usually negligible but can be filled with any paintable putty. Another trick: Cut your 45's. Put the boards together at 90 degree angle (as they would be in final assembly) and run the saw down the middle at a 45. The two sides will fit perfectly. Measure and cut the part of the board that will have a straight cut at the back last.

So Juan:

Check out the status of my canopy. Do you want one? I can whip up a 'sleeve' version eeeeasy. Maybe we can work out a trade or some other deal?

On the grill:. I thought about it -- But it would impede airflow and if somebody puts their fingers in it they deserve the "zip" they get... Shouldn't be enough to do any 'real' damage. Other than that I actually have weighed the cost of those gummi gaskets dudes put between fan/case as dampers to further reduce noise.

I thought about mounting the damper 'in reverse' (ex: Low end = front, high end = back) but REALLY wanted easy access to tank with no strut(s) in my way when I needed to man-handle some base rock! (hint, hint)

Hey Kevin - what every you do to your base rock in private is your business.

Regarding the fan grills - I doubt they would impeded much air flow at all. I don't know what type of fan you're using, by Panasonic makes some really quiet case fans. It doesn't move a lot of air but they are super quiet.

I'm using Vantec's "stealth" series on a variable voltage power supply. They fire up on the 4.5v setting -- Which to me is inaudible. They really move air at the 12v setting. I don't know yet if they'll be any louder than the rest of the equipment at the 12v setting when everything's running together.
