i cant believe that all the so called rays fans are gone. my wife won tickets to tonights game(friday night) and the stadium was was at most 60% full. last year they went to the world series!!!! now they are in a funk and cant sell tickets. its friday night against their arch rivals(boston redsox) and they cant sell out. that is a shame.

Yo, I got a little bored watching the Rays masacre the A's last night, so I did a little research. So far this year, home game attendance is up 40% over last year. Hmmm...

you might be right but dont forget NOBODY went to the games til the second half of the season when they were winning. sales should be up for a team that goes to the world series. my statement was that on a friday night against the redsox i was surprised they didnt sell out. half the fans were sox fans.

people just don't seem to understand that you CANNOT compare attendance for the Rays to teams like Boston or the Yankmees. The stadiums for those teams are right in the middle of HUGE cities. Half of the attendence to their games are people that just walk to the stadium. The location of Tropicana Field is what hinders fan attendance. I am a huge rays fan and the drive is just to far for me from lakeland. I go to a few games a year, but that it. Must suck for all of those boston fans to always come watch thier team lose at the trop.

1st of all, i hate boston :). second, i understand your point but was responding on the post of "So far this year, home game attendance is up 40% over last year. Hmmm...". he is basing his stats on the beginning of last year when no one came. this year sales have gone up as they should have being the rays went to the world series last year.

also, for all the true rays fans that are out there, i tip my hat to with respect for supporting your team even if its only a few games a year. you can also support your team with buying rays gear.

That is exactly what I was thinking! Not to mention that the historical Yankees aren't selling out their stadium and the attendance is down all across the board. Just like most TYPICAL fans, nothing is ever good enough I guess. Any owner of a business would give up a kidney for an increase like that!

Lightning never spent money and always semmed like they were changing owners and was going to move and then we got new owners and few decent seasons and then the chamionship and then....strike. After a few years off with no hockey they gut the team and wonder why the fans aren't coming? Bad product=no customers. Oh yeah, hiring Barry Melrose and getting rid of Tortorella was brilliant.

lol. the difference between a 40% of last years NO FAN RAYS and last years yankees profit is significant. the only thing is its easier to have a 40% increase on a team that couldnt sell tickets in the 1st half of the season last year. also mr. jax, yes the yanks arent selling out but they are averaging 44,493 a game while the world series runners up are averaging a measly 25,603.

And what is the population of the NY Metro area vs the Tampa Bay area? What is the average income in the northeast compared to Tampa? Do you think any of that might make a slight difference?

Look, they have been bad for a long time. It is hard to build a fan base that way. But there are a lot of factors in Rays attendance other than just how much their fans like them. With the economy as bad as it is, cities with lower average incomes (Tampa) are hit harder than other cities. When things get tighter people have to make choices. And unfortunately, a baseball team in a poor location with a poor history of play and ownership is often one of the first things off the list.
Just think what the attendance would be if they didn't make the Series last year.

i see your point about the ny metro area. what about the COST OF LIVING in fla?? im from connecticut so i know what the expenses are. granted the wages are lower in fla but in this bad economy can you imagine competing for a job in ny. fla isnt the hardest hit state in the economy. yes, the rays have been bad for a long time. 1 good season and everyone says they have been rays fans forever.

Do to the fact that in the NY BOS CHI area there are a great deal more downtown businessman and companyies that buy alot of the tickets and give them out or take the opportunity to go to the game if only for a few innings in the middle of the day in the middle of the week. Having the stadium in St. Pete and not even remotely close to downtown Tampa you will not get any those ticket sales. As as mentioned the population in comparison, not just cost of living is a huge factor! Are you a Rays fan?

Chicago is in Illinios, Boston in Mass and NY is in...well NY. Hmm?
Boston Population 4,482,857
Chicago Population 9.6 million
New York city Population 19,490,297

In Hillsborough county 1,200,541

I think our ratio is pretty good.
