Lone clown laying eggs?

Hello all,

A friend of mine has a small 15 gal tank with a small blenny and a lone percula. He recently (within a month) got a BTA and the clownfish immediately hosted in the BTA. This past week it appears that there are eggs at the base of the BTA. I know that fish in the wild routinely lay eggs that may or may not be fertilized, but I have not heard of this occuring in an aquarium. I would have thought that there needed to be some sort of hormonal trigger or other trigger to initiate laying of eggs. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jamison

A. Ocellaris have been reported to spawn without a mate. I would be more surprised to find that the clown laid eggs that quickly after adding an anemone.

Interesting. I just talked to the curator at UCSB this weekend. They have a female shark there who was mated over a year and a half ago with a male shark. The male was removed from teh tank and she has consistantly produced fertile eggs every 28 days for the last year and a half. They raise the babies and use them in their research. They are also collecting data to see how long she can store the sperm and produce fertile eggs. So far, 1 1/2 years.

I know that FW fish do this as I had a black molly who did the same, produced a batch of fry every 4 weeks with no adult male in the tank for several months.

Lone Tomato Laid Eggs

Yeah, my Tomato clown laid eggs yesterday. I have had it for over six months. Moved it to a 125 about two months ago. :spin2:
