Can they be kept singly or should they have a buddy or two?

They can be kept singly, but they really prefer to be in a school. Even two of them will "school". Here is an excerpt about them from my "Advanced Marine Aquarium Techniques" book:
Lookdown Selene vomer Carangidae
A tropical schooling member of the jack family, lookdowns are more suited to life in captivity than are larger species of jack. Their smaller size and smaller mouth indicates that they pose little danger to any but the smallest tankmate. They do require ample swimming room in order to form schools â€"œ so an aquarium on the order of 900 gallons would be required to house a half dozen adult lookdowns. They are prone to Cryptocaryon infections when first acquired; they are otherwise hardy and long-lived.
