Looking for 40g breeder setups…

Ive decided to go with a 40g breeder tank for my jump back into the hobby. I was thinking a 20g long sump but haven’t seen any threads with info on sumps and most pics are gone due to age I’d imagine. I’d like to be able to possibly set up a refuge in it along with skimmer and top off. I plan on making a thread to track progress once I get past planning stage.

I'm currently in the process of upgrading from a 40B to a 150. When I set my 40 up, I drilled the back glass and installed an eShopps Eclipse overflow. I used a 10 gallon for a sump with a Modular Marine kit to install the filter sock holder and baffles. Obviously, the 10 is too small to integrate a fuge but, with a 20 long you should be able to make a small fuge. With the Eclipse and Modular Marine kit, it was pretty easy to set everything up.

Griss, thanks for the details of your tank. Question did you choose the overflow because the bottom is tempered glass

Yes, bottom was tempered. One bit of advice, the Eclipse overflow templates are designed for a rimless tank. So, if using on a tank with a rim, you'll want to take that into account and make an adjustment to where you drill. It was too late for me and the water level was about 3/4" below the rim. I used nylon nuts/bolts and a piece of acrylic to make a moveable weir on the overflow so I could raise the water level in the tank.

I’ve got a overflow I bought years ago for a 40g but life happened and got boxed up, I’m gonna try and find it today, although not the same style you have

Well dug it out…amazing I found it since it was packed away 16+ years ago. I attached a few pics, just want to make sure it can handle the 40g. I’m pretty dang sure I bought for a 40 but back then who knows what I was thinking at the moment.

What size is that bulkhead?

A couple of things. 1. that looks like there will be pvc on the outside of the tank going direct to the sump so, you won't be able to do a BeanAnimal, Durso or Herbie overflow to silence it. 2. With only one drain pipe/tube, there will be no emergency backup if the pipe gets clogged.

Ok that all makes sense…although I did have to search to figure out what a “bean animal” is. So I’m going to use an external overflow. I was looking at the eclipse like you mentioned but also saw the modular marine. Have you used or heard anything about them? They seem like a good option potentially.
