Looking for a 10g+ tank

I have a new baby snake I found in one of the greenhouses at work and I'm looking for a 10-30g tank (nothing "tall") to hold him over til we re-release him in spring, no lid necessary, doesn't even have to be waterproof, just priced nicely and reasonably sized for a tiny tiny snake. DM area.

I dunno actually, the guys at work claim it's a bullsnake, but it looks more like a garter to me. We do get shipments in from Cali and Florida a couple times a week though and they regularly have anoles and tree frogs, so it could have come from a shipment. Either way, he's the size of a nightcrawler so I don't need too much space.
 
Hey Rachael, Have Ryan send me that pic. I'll try to identify him for you. Doesn't sound like he is a Garter or a bull. Is he aggressive? If not probably not a bull, they are mean little buggers. A large portion of the snakes in Iowa identified as bull snakes are actually fox snakes that are much more docile.
 
Could even be a kingsnake if it comes from cali......just don't feed him in the same cage as your holding him in!
 
Rachel - you could also check aqualand on 6th and Euclid - I think they have 5 gallon tanks for pretty cheap...they also have some other reptile stuff (like maybe food? what do you feed a snake that small?? ants??)

Or you could just go to Dahls/HyVee and get him a bigger "Gladware" container than he's in now :lol:

PS - your profile (under your screen name) still says D-Port - now that your tank is in DM you can probably change that!

Pretty sure it's not a bull snake. Beyond that I'm clueless.
 
If it is from Iowa I am thinking a Smooth Earth Snake. I will look in my DNR Snake book tonight if I can find it. Not a bull snake or garter though.
 
It looked a lot more green with purple markings last night, obviously under different lighting...

Very cool pic Ryan! How many did you have to take until his tongue was out like that??
 
No red belly Nykademus but gosh, that picture looks like him.
Thanks for the ID Joel! I think I'm leaning towards a Northern Brown Snake AKA DeKay's Snake though - there's so much variation within species region by region that I can find a picture of almost any species that looks somewhat like this one, and I've seen a couple of the smooth earth snake that look really close, but the pictures I'm finding of the DeKay's snake are most consistently the same.
Now if only I knew where to find slugs when snow is on the ground...

It is still early in the year. Lift a few flower pots off the ground and I bet you will find some slugs there. If in fact it is a Northern Brown Snake, it is a protected species as well.
