Anyone know of one with out spending over $300? I was planning on buying one today but if i could get pointed in the right direction i'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Nick

I'm not a camera guru, but I was in the same boat as you. While you can get a great point and click camera for general picture taking on that budget, nothing beats an DSLR camera for aquarium photography. And because of that, they run a lot more than $300. I made the mistake of getting a non-DSLR because I was on a budget, and now I'm kicking myself in the butt.

A DSLR is a digital version of the 35mm SLR camera. The big benefit is that you can swap lenses when necessary.

For $300 what I'd do is look for a used Canon G5 or G6. For aquarium shooting you really want a camera that is capable of outputting RAW files and one that supports custom white balance setting.

I wonder how a s2 or s3 stacks up against a G5/6.

I sure hate the lack of raw on my s2

I called canon and asked the question to "best macro camera they carry" = S3 IS, he also mention about the release of the TX1.

No mistaking the S2/3 is an excellent macro camera, but I know I am losing a lot of detail from the lack of raw.
Search some of my posts, most come out of an S2 and I do 90% macro.

A DSLR would be best but if you are on a budget I would recommend a Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z10 .Well that is actually a few years old so maybe a newer version Z5 or z6.
I have been very happy with the design. I can get over 300 flash shots while using the display on the 4 rechargable AA's.
fast start up and fairly fast shutter reaction time! great macros.
here is a few shots to give you an idea of the camera quality .this is only a 3 megapixel I am sure it would look better with 5 or 6.

Oaky iwas going to get the S3 IS but it doesn't have a waterproof case so instead i am planning to go for a G7 instead. Is this a good choice? Its a little bit higher than what i wanted to spend but i want this camera to last me for a while and i want to take underwater pictures for when i go snorkeling in mexico on my honeymoon. Plus i want to take macro shots as well. This camera seem like it can do everything i am looking for. So is this a good idea or no?

I am also looking into cameras at the moment and pretty much rounded it down to a fujifilm s6500 or s9600, they both cost a little more but they seem to have very nice features, operates like a dslr but can't change lenses, so it will be a lot cheaper than goind dslr where you would need a number of very expensive lenses to get a similar zoom range.

If you arent going dslr, I really like the fuji S series. I had the s7000 a few years ago before I got my first rebel.
