A DSLR is a digital version of the 35mm SLR camera. The big benefit is that you can swap lenses when necessary.
For $300 what I'd do is look for a used Canon G5 or G6. For aquarium shooting you really want a camera that is capable of outputting RAW files and one that supports custom white balance setting.
