[welcome]

There are hundreds to chose from that are good. What is your price range. I can think of at least ten brands that might suit your needs... They start at about $100 and go up from there. What are you keeping, what are your goals?

Can I piggyback on this? Recently upgraded to a 55g tank from a 30g that had a sump and a coralife super skimmer. The new tank stand does not have the space for a sump due to the center brace. Was interested in a GOOD hang on the back skimmer that won't be an eyesore. Money is not an issue. My coralife though, sometimes it would fill the cup and then overflow, which is why I am not using it now, I don't want the overflow onto my floor. Suggestions?

There are a lot of good ones. Avoid SeaClone like the plague. They work great for about 3 months and then it is all down hill from there.

If ytou are looking for a HOB then a REMORA is the best you can buy. I have one on a 40g and the thing collects green stuff out the wazooo!

yeah thanks my goals are focused on fish with some easy to keep corals for aesthetic appeal need good quality skimmer i am unsure about the effectiveness of a wet-dry filter seems like it just cycles the water i have heard from various sources that bioballs are bad and not needed so i just put live rock in my sump where the bioballs would be in short i am looking for happy fish and supreme water quality

You say you have a 55 gallon tank, and that the center brace is a problem for a sump... well mark gots a good solution to this check out all of his sumps, so you can go ahead and decided on what you really want to do...

here is the website:

Melevsreef.com

Hope this helps you, their is alot of info also from his site, and he makes custom sumps and other things as well...

I would not skimp on the protein skimmer in any case. Good (but somewhat cheaper) skimmers include Coralife super skimmers, ASM, Pacific Coast import octopus skimmers, and Euroreef. If you have the budget, it would be even better if you could spring for a Deltec, like in Hop's link above.

If your looking for the "best" HOB skimmer and price isnt a issue, this would be it.

Deltec MCE600

If your on a tight budget and need a skimmer that will work pretty good, your best chocies are....

AquaC Remora - $160.00
AquaC Remora Pro $230.00
CPR Bakpak - $100.00
CS super skimmer - $95.00

i HAD a jebo brand skimmer and well needless to say i rule them out. worked great for a few monthes then nothing no matter what i did to make it work. i now have an ASM.

Dont rule out the jebo brand skimmers.

I hope this was a joke. :eek2:

Its what i use for an insump skimmer.Ive been using it now for 8 months with good results. My nitrates are 1.6 using the medusa to test. This model has a 600gph pump so its a little better then the average cheapo.I did add a check valve as well.

BTW this skimmer was around 40 bucks.

In my FO tank I used a Prism Skimmer, it was the biggest piece of garbage equipment I ever bought. Currently in my reef I run a CS-2 Euroreef skimmer and it works fantastic. It's a little pricey but it is well worth it. Like someone else said this is one of the most important things you will buy for your tank. ASM is similar to the Euroreef but I never used that one.
