Looking for Mangroves

Send reefer20 a PM he's waiting on the trees where he lives in Puerto Rico to sprout seeds. I am waiting myself!

I just have a 58g. I was thinking 5-10 of them.

I don't know how many it will take, but I don't think it will be a much more than that (if any).

Steve

jnsnams,

The mangroves do the same as chaeto (macro algae) in a sump.

They help complete the cycle of food:
-We feed the fish
-the fish then turn this to waste
-the waste turns into ammonia (somehow?)
-the sand bed and other things like live rock and such turn the ammonia into nitrite
-the deeper portion of the sand bed turns the nitrite to nitrate
-the plants (macro algae or mangroves) use the nitrate as food
-then you can remove access macro and toss it
-thus completing the food, poo, food cycle

Something like that anyway. I probably have something mixed up or missing, but that is close.

Steve

I have always pondered about getting some mangroves.

Curious though, do you house them in a DSB, for rooting?

I've seen them in a sandbed and I've seen them stuck through a sheet of styrofoam and floated.

I don't know which way would work best.

I'll do more checking on that or maybe even try both ways and see wich ones grow best.

We purchased 20 off of ebay and they were about $1 each or close to it....we put them in the fuge in miracle mud and sand.....we have always had an issue with nitrates could not get them down to 0...always like 20-40....

within like 4 weeks they rooted, sprouted and the trates are undectable.

love them!! Made a believer out of us

I read somewhere that 1 for every 5-10 gallons. When I got mine off of ebay they came with 10.

Glad to hear they're working out for everyone. I considered trying mangroves once but was scared off when I read that they eventually depleted one of the essential trace elements. Can't find the article and can't remember which element it depleted, maybe magnesium? Anyhoo, seeing this thread has made me want to try it again and I was wondering if any of you mangrove users test/dose for it. Thanks

we have noticed that the magnesium has dropped, but we test and dose bout once a week....to stay within desired range

Thanks for the pictures! What is your lighting schedule on the sprouts? Is it on a reverse lighting schedule and what type of bulb?

Thanks!
