Looking for proof LEDs work - post pics if you have them

WOW. Nice tank. I can only hope to get mine to look like that some day.

Thank you

Truly incredible tank.

Thanks!

@ros_sco; nicely done :celeb1: what are your setting on the Sunbrite?

Thank you.

They are all Gen 2 Sunbrites in my custom canopy, Sunbrite controller.
I have the following mix:

1 x 440nm 7:30AM - 11PM

1 x 470nm 7:30AM - 11PM

1 x 20,000K 11:30AM-9PM

5 X 16,000k 7.5 hours each staggered 5 minutes start and stop times starting with the first one on at 11:00 AM and off at 6:30PM

2 x 12,000K 11:30AM to 4:30PM

Nice tank Scott. Do you have a dedicated thread to keep track of your tank's progression? I'd like to follow your tank's progress seeing you are also using LEDs only.

Here is my 75. I have been running the same LED fixtures for almost 3 years. No new corals added starting 2010 (second pic in progression shots). First picture in progression shot was taken when I was still running 3 x 250 MH. I don't remember the bulbs used since I changed them so often. I remember using XM bulbs mostly. If you see new corals, that is because they were rescued from dark recesses and placed in more visible locations after removal of some larger colonies. If you look closely, you can see how many colonies and rocks were removed in the past few years to keep the open look that I prefer. For anyone interested, the thread I created to document the switch and build at the very beginning is located here. Another thread was created to document my observations, as well as some progression pics after two years.
There are many who have had success with LEDs (as defined by them). It's obvious LEDs work. Some may not like the way corals look under them. Each to his/her own. Since aesthetics is a subjective matter, it is pointless to argue what is best...

i dont think anyone is arguing the fact that LEDs cant grow corals.its that they are not keeping certain colors like red, pink and yellow

Well I have to disagree with that statement. I have a red planet I have grown from a small base frag and it is red pink no problem. I will say and agree that LEDs tend to have color weaknesses and I think each fixture has its own problems.

I am doing red, pink, purple, green, orange, and yellow great. If I'm missing a color lmk but looking at my tank now and I see all those and r very good.

I will say I have noticed that the LEDs seem to have trouble in some corals bringing out the base color. For example my superman Monticello have min blue compared to when it was under MH also the red planet has trouble bringing out the green base behind the polyps.

How red, how pink, or how yellow someone prefers their corals to look is subjective. I am fine with my reds, pinks, as well as yellows. However, if you see my tank, you may not be fine with how those colors are represented.
If you are having problems even getting colors into the general ballpark with a quality rig, then you have other problems such as water chemistry/quality.

I personally don't like my corals to look radioactive, but some may prefer that. Compared to how they look in the ocean, my corals still look very much radioactive.

If you ever go diving on the reef, you will see that colors of corals do not look anything like what they look like in most of our tanks. Obviously the majority of people prefer the current status-quo over what they look like under natural sunlight. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with that. It's just what people want.

I started my new 210 gallon tank 11 months ago. Lighting is 10 x 72 inch Sunbrite LED tubes. Most of the corals started out in my 75 gallon under halides. Many were cut way back for the re-start.

The tank has had to endure a major (89.5 Degrees) overheating event due to home A/C failure in April (during the one hot weekend we had while I was out of town of course) which browned out alot of the corals - and killed a few. Some of the corals have recovered and now look better than they ever did, some not so much yet.

Growth has been phenomenal. I recently cut 3 inches off the left side and 5 inches off the right side of my Red Planet (last picture, middle). It was actually shading the ORA Bellina to the right and touching Joe the Coral on the left. The purple acro next to the clam has doubled in size. All of the Montis in the lower right were 2 inch pieces 6 months ago. The Red Dragon (first picture, bottom middle) has grown from a 3 spindly branched mini colony to a nice large colony with an 8 inch spread. The Green Slimer has grown 6 more inches, the whole right cluster is new. The blue Speciosa (right picture, far right) has grown at least 6 inches.

First, the new tank

right8-21-12.jpg

The old tank was way overgrown at the end, hence the fragging back of the corals. Many of the corals were getting shaded out or had damage from flow changes.

As you can see in these comparison photos, some of the coral I had in the old tank did not make the transfer. I believe several reasons to play a part. Flow changes on the large colonies. Total light type change coupled with the corals not facing the light the exact same way as before. Large colonies spending the day in totes and then being put in a cycled but young tank with existing rock and the life and accociated dye off on the rock which was also recieving flow and light from new directions.

Dude there is a lot of cash to be made from that over growth..... Amazing.... how long did that kind of growth take? If that is 11 months that is amazing...

Most of the large colonies were about one-third to half the size they are now for the re-start. I kept the nicest pieces of the colonies I downsized, but I did do a fair bit of trading at the LFS's and gave some to the crew that helped me on move day.

I will try to put some growth pictures together when I get time to take some current single colony shots.

Thanks for the compliment. That shot is from the old 75 under MH lighting, the first 3 are the new tank now under LED. I am hoping to get some current growth pics taken soon.

Personally I think the LED side looks a little better. The MH side looks a little washed out. Looking back at old pics of my tank I see the same thing.

In person, the LED side looks a little washed out. Right now... neither side looks like much. The tank is going through growing pains.

As promised, I have put together quite a few growth pictures. In addition to all the acros pictured, Montipora - both Digi and Cap types have been growing and look as well or better as they ever did under MH. Acans, Chalices, Stylophora and Seriatopora as well. Thanks for looking.

wow..the growth on the red dragon is phenomenal. I thought mine wasnt going bad but it might be growing at half the speed of yours. Although mine has grown tighter....but I prefer the branchy'r look you've got. Just dont breath on one of those branches....so delicate.
