Hey guys! As I begin my saltwater journey I have already began the process of choosing what kind of stock I would like to be in my tank. I have came up with a list (below) but I feel like im missing a really cool fish something that's unordinary and will stand out. If you have any ideas throw them my way!

1-Royal gramma
1-Tiger snapping shrimp
1-Carpenters flasher wrasse
1-Yellow watchman goby
2-Ocellaris Clownfish
1-Flame angel
1-Starry Blenny
1-Tile Sea Star
1-Blue Tuxedo Urchin

Canister filters aren't really used in saltwater. They collect detritus which rots and turns to nitrates. Protein skimmers are the most effective. I don't think you'd be able to get away with that many fish without a skimmer. Reef octopus makes good skimmers for the money. Not too hard on the wallet.

How about changing your current list a bit instead of adding. I am also planning on an Ocellaris pair but I'm shooting for a Wyoming White and a Black Snowflake. Also I see the pistol shrimp but no goby...? I have a Yasha Goby and a Randall's pistol shrimp that paired in my tank. IMO, the randall's is more colorful and poses much less of an issue to the smaller fish in your tank. The tiger pistol shimp gets quite a bit bigger than the Randall's.

I have been thinking about finding a different set of clowns that will be a lot cooler than the norm! Great idea! I have the yellow watchman goby listed. are the randalls the ones with purple on the claws?

opps missed the YWG. Do a google image search for the randalls pistol shrimp red and yellow no purple though.

Golden assessor basslet or candy basslet

The clown variations are a waste of money, the simple orange occelaris or percula are the nicest IMO.

Depending on your budget I'd get the nw110 or sro1000. Feed once a day, do regular water changes, and run carbon and gfo. They can be found used all the time. Bubble Magus makes nice ones as well but I've never used one so I can't comment on which one would be suitable.

Hey Colin and welcome to the hobby... I mean... addiction. For the most part, I like your stock list and, with this being your first, I wouldn't deviate much from that and upgrade to the more unique and more expensive fish once you're comfortable. The main thing I would suggest is to get that tank drilled and have a sump. With this, you get versatility and concealment. You can add a refugium if you desire which can grow Chaeto (for nutrient export and growing pods along with a place to put a fish that is a bully), it can house your skimmer (which I agree is a must), it can house your heater and give you room to expand if you so desire in the future. I would look into the bean animal overflow to give you a failsafe and silence... http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=14058977#post14058977

I'm not too familiar with the Tile Sea Star but most can be a bit touchy whereas the Chocolate Chips Stars are cheap and hardy compared to the rest of the family. You could start with one of those and change out at a later time. Also, I have never had the Blue Tuxedo, but I have had the Long Spine and removed it from my old FOWLER after being unhappy with how much it scarred up my live rock by eating up the purple corraline algae and how brown and green algae grew where it scarred.

+ on the Randall's Shrimp. They are more colorful and just as hardy as the Tiger. You could pair it with a Randall's Pistol Shrimp. They are white with orange stripes and will have a very similar behavior as the Yellow Watchman but are less temperamental.

I would also highly recommend picking up a 10 gallon tank, small heater, powerhead and hand on the back filter and give yourself a small and inexpensive quarantine tank. It will be a good investment in your peace of mind.

As for substrate, I would go with something fine like aragonite. You may want a wrasse that likes to burry itself or a sifting goby that will need this. Larger and more coarse substrate doesn't hurt anything but may eliminate something you want in the future.

Lastly, I would add the Flame Angel last since, while it is a fairly easy fish to keep, it is the least hardy and most prone to get parasites of your stock list.

Wish you the best of luck!
Mike

I'm almost done stocking my 75g. Almost all the fish have differnet colors and none of the fish are too big making the tank feel small. Here's what I got in mine...

flame angel
pair- onyx percula clowns
midas blenny
purple firefish
bluegreen chromis
blood red fire shrimp

One of the smaller dwarf angels or butterfly fish could work. I'm a big fan of Toby puffers too, LOTS of personality.

+1 sounds good! I didn't intend to be mean by my first comment by the way, I mean that once you get one coral, the addiction is impossible to overcome!
