Looking into upgrading skimmer

I am seriously towying with upgrading my skimmer and Powerheads.

I have been looking at some potentially good deals on ASM G2 or Octopus DNW 150-200 skimmers, but the ASM's are a little better priced and more readily available.

I also am in line to get 2 brand new Vortech m40w gen 2 wavemakers for under 800 bucks.

Thoughts?

Look into I-Tech skimmers, They are the best New skimmer out there and are reasonably priced. Had I not found my Reeflo I would have bought one of these, For your needs I'd say a 200 model will do you fine! Are you coming to S. H. any time soon or do you want my Addy, regarding what we talked about the other day. Want to order my RK ASAP. Tunze over Vortech IMHO much more bang for the buck and customer svc Is way better, They replace with no questions asked when there Is a problem, Which Is seldom Roger Vitgo Is always ahead of the curve for the best cust/svc around.

I agree with Bill on tunze, excellent product, controllable and customer service is just super. I am using a ASM G3 skimmer and it works just great, but any good skimmer will get the job done.

I really like the concept of the Vortechs, but it burns me up inside knowing they are selling the same bloody pump in the 20w and 40w but limiting the current in the 20w to make you get the 40w instead, or by buying the "upgrade" kit.

Unless I can find a good reason for this, I'm not going to support companies that do crap like that.

those I-Tech skimmers are amazing, wish i had waited for that instead of buying the Octopus Extreme 160 but im very happy with mine.

They are very affordable also. Usually would have to spend atleast $1000 to get that kind of performance.

Here Is the thread on the I-Tech

Looks like a nice skimmer, however it is a little pricey for the size. They are also moving to replace the Sicce pump with a Tunze designed by Roger, which will increase the rpice a little, but supposedly perform better and allow for warranty where Sicce really isn't warrantying their pumps bodies if modified for skimmer use.

Pricing o the current 200 was $530.00 with the pump, and will be around $590.00 with the tunze when it releases soon.

Money well spent, Seeing as you won't need to replace that one any time soon. You can get that skimmer with any pump you want to use on It not just those two you mentioned. That Is as good as some that are two and three times the price for no better performance. Either way better than ASM or Octo by a mile IMHO.

So what pumps would you think would be good? I don't know a huge amount about the skimmer pumps out there. I am learning quickly though :-)

Depends how much you want to spend, Although money should not be the deciding factor If you want the best performance! That being said you have many to choose from Red Dragon, Askoll, Sicce, Reeflo, Atb, and I'm sure with research I can find more. If your interested In I-Tech the owner Is real good about talking to people to select the right setup for your set up. And I would give him a call and talk to him personally. Oh Yeah the Tunze pumps also may be the best selection for two reasons, Power cost, Longevity, And just plain old quality.

I did talk to John down there at itchyfish. Nice guy. The pumps he uses are Coralvue PSK's (ATB). I will have to mull it over.

I have done some pretty heavy research, and although the Tunze 6105's ar slightly less than the vortech, te cost is somewaht comperable when you factor in the controller aspect. I am iterested in the Vortech becasue of the low pressure yet maassive flow capability, and that many forums are raving it up over the Tunze. No one has stated any quality or customer service issue with tunze, yet they tout very high praise for Vortechs customer service as well.

I also like the idea of not wires being inside my tank. Much cleaner. I had the opportunit to see the MP40w's first hand and was wow's.

So I am deliberating on what to get. I like the long standing reputation of the Tunze.

I think I am going to go with the I-tech if the numbers (my budget) works out right on Friday. The videos ad every thread I have read is overwhelming in evidence of it's amazing function. The cone skimmers are definitely awesome.

I am also, much to the probable disenchantment of Bill I am going to go with with Vortechs. What I saw of them yesterday was jsut too powerful of an impression for me to shake off for the Tunze's. Granted Tunze makes a great product, I like the flow of the Vortech's and want to give them a shot. I only hope I do not have to hear the immortal words from Bill that "He told me so" hehe.

Yes, been there many times. Great place. Nice little shop. The pizza store next door has good food too hehe.

Nice frag tanks, they had a gigantic clam that was awesome.

Oh cool!! Did you see one of his I-tech skimmers in action?

Unfortunately, I didn't pay that much attention to the equipment. Mainly stopped in to look at corals and whatnot. The store was right down the road from my office, maybe 5 miles. If he uses those skimmers on the store tanks, you won't regret getting one- from looking at the pics of what they can pull online, they seem like they're quality. All the tanks in the store were extremely healthy and the SPS frag tank was amazing. It makes all the stores here look like a joke (sorry.)

Andy,

If you go with the Vortechs you will not be disappointed. The only thing I dislike about mine is the fact that you can't really control them with the RKE. I love the small footprint inside the tank and the fact that I have no deadspots in my 220, and you can completely change the flow of your tank with a simple push of a button. As far as customer service goes I have only dealt with them once when I upgraded my 1st pump to the gen2, it took 2 days to get the parts from the time I called, Tim was extremely nice to deal with and was eager to answer any questions I had.
If you have any questions about them before you buy just give me a call.

Just give a postive on the vortechs pumps and customer service. I had a problem with the controller and send it in for work and load new safeware in the pump. well send it in fridaymorning and monday night it was back on door step fixed. so fast turn around I would say.and answer my e-mails with in hours.
and main problem I had at frist was keep my tank temp up. and for flow I have 2 mp40w gen2 in a 125g 6ft long tank on each side that give me more than enough flow at 50% power to the powerhead and make a 1.5in wave, and also you can get a backup battery for them i run mine 2 mp40w for about 30hrs.on the IceCap battery.
so I ever had tunze so I can't compare them. hope this helps with your pick.
you get a package deaal from marine depot 2 mp40w with 1 back up battery for 999.97 Im sure you be able to find a better deal somewhere.

Also if you like to come by sunday and see my vortech in action you are more then welcome to just call before. Im right by Opyrland hotel

and one more thing eco tech is comeing out with a nano vortech powerhead mp10 for glass thickness 3/8 or smaller. cant wait to this in actoin
