Looking into upgrading skimmer

Thanks Zef!!

I just paid for the MP40W's, and I got em for $715 shipped! Yes, Brand New in Box. I got real lucky. The Battery Backup is not that much of a concern for me because I have a Generator, and also severl Large PC ups;s. At the low wattage I am not worried too much about run time under a power outage between the bat and the genny.

After being on the fence for several days, I finally added up everything, and the one thing I forgot with the Tunze's was that I had to buy the magnet mounts as well. Price was the last factor, and it is kind of funny it became the deciding factor because I was pretty much dead even on pro's/Con's between the two.

I am also, much to the probable disenchantment of Bill I am going to go with with Vortechs. What I saw of them yesterday was jsut too powerful of an impression for me to shake off for the Tunze's. Granted Tunze makes a great product, I like the flow of the Vortech's and want to give them a shot. I only hope I do not have to hear the immortal words from Bill that "He told me so" hehe.

Andy,

If you go with the Vortechs you will not be disappointed. The only thing I dislike about mine is the fact that you can't really control them with the RKE. I love the small footprint inside the tank and the fact that I have no deadspots in my 220, and you can completely change the flow of your tank with a simple push of a button. As far as customer service goes I have only dealt with them once when I upgraded my 1st pump to the gen2, it took 2 days to get the parts from the time I called, Tim was extremely nice to deal with and was eager to answer any questions I had.
If you have any questions about them before you buy just give me a call.

Danny

Thanks Danny!! I did order them tonight. Seeing them in your tank first hand really did help me decide. The thing is, the RKE would not control the Tunze's to potential either, so that became a wash for me. If the Tunze's could be controlled with advanced wave programs via the RKE that would have put my decision the other way.

To be honest, Andy, I am 95% positive Tunze control will be available soon for the RKE. :)

But I'm also planning on going with Vortechs. :D If I get this new job, I'm probably going to pickup a single MP20 or MP40W for my 45g for now and use it on my larger tank later. :)

Well to my surprise I got a not very cordial response from Roger @ Tunze asking just that question!! As a avid Tunze supporter I was quite surprised at the semi hostile response from them seeing all I was wanting to know If It's possible to do. Tunze has a new controller that Is just coming on the market and may have triggered the response. This use mine mentality Is not IMHO good for any MFG to try and force people into products that are not intergrateable.

You probably received a hostile response because the Tunze controllers are WAY overpriced for what they do, which caused other products to come up in the market and compete very heavily with them. Specifically the AquaSurf comes to mind. ;)

Just my opinion, tho. :)

Though I'm not happy with the response I got from Tunze there is not any difference in either one being compatible with the RK Elite Vortechs also only use their own controller!! And though I did not get an answer from Roger doesn't mean It's not possible to bypass Tunze controller and plug them direct to a PC4 and have them work on RK wave maker, I do not know? Lastly I still prefer German Craftsmanship over all and will always use their powerheads over Vortechs, But will not tell you I told you so If your not happy In the long run. Hope they work out great for you!

Andy FWIW I run a vortec MP40 and love it. I also have a small tinze 6025. I have used other tunze's in the past and like the vortec alot better. those were the very first version of Tunze streams that came out around 2003 and they were a pain with the holders they used. But cannot comment on the newer versions. I just need a bigger tank to get the full effect of the vortec though. Great flow....

I agree Rick, I also bought a 6045 when they first came out and had a few problems with It. Low and behold a year or more later Roger at Tunze looked at It and said he would send me a new version at no charge to me , Had It in two days at no cost to me! That Is why I stick with Tunze products I also have 6101s and I'm real happy with them and never had any problems with them. I have seen the Vortechs in person and prefer the flow from the Tunze's better, Though both are similar in function.

What about it? From what I read it takes about a week, and also if he did not align then wet and dry side right it will be noisy. All readings stress take your time when first setting up to get it right. I'm not worried...yet :-) To achieve great results you must take great risk at times.

yep that was the one, 6045. Roger is awesome!! He sent me a brand new 6025 also. Their service is impecable. I really like the controller options for the Tunze's though.

Andy, there is a controller hack for the vortec and aquasurf

That is right, It took about a week and a half and mine is very quiet now. the wet and dry side have to find their perfect union with each other, and it takes a little while

As far as the skimmer goes, I spoke to John again today and it seems they are still researching with the Tunze and will be for awhile, so I ordered an I-200 with the Sicce pump. If/when the Tunze pump comes out I will get a small discount if I want one.

If and when that Tunze comes out, I would be willing to take the Sicce off of your hands. ;)

Brandon

Well that might be doable if I get it :-) Firs they have to come out with it, then I ahve to make sure I budget for it (ok, so I usually can come up with the cash but still the wife has to approve=budget lol), and then we can talk about it.
