Losing battle against algae

I've never read anything the said Yellow tangs. News to me, good luck hopefully it helps.
I had a orange spot rabbit fish that ate it, but it also ate alot of corals in the tank too

Here's the tank 48 hrs after scrubbing and manually removing/syphoning everything.

I removed the rocks, frags, powerheads, skimmer, basically anything I could take out of the tank and scrubbed it in a bucket of tank water.

Then I used a razorblade to cut out as much as I could, used a syphon to syphon the particles out.

Then a fish net for about an hour to fish out stuff I missed.

Then I hooked up an aquaclear 20 for 24 hours to remove any particles I missed, along with a 2 phosban reactors with carbon and GFO media.

I still need to do some cleanup on some areas I missed, hopefully daily maintenance will eradicate this outbreak, or keep it knocked down to the point where the tang and magnesium will finish it off.

I'm sorry but everytime I see that dwarf tang the movie
Honey i shrunk the kids comes to mind:lol:

good thing your helping that tang with the algae problem its liable to get caught up in it and smother itself:rollface:

too much TJ too much

I'm convinced you got a tang decal with the last copy of "the little Mermaid " you bought
and just stuck it on the back of your tank LOL

Here's a video of the tang picking at the Bryopsis. I tried to get a video of him picking across the eggcrate, but everytimg I got close he swam and hid.

Ever since I cleaned the majority of it out by hand, he's been doing a good job keeping it at bay.:D

nice video --the tang looks like it has doubled in size since last week
but I can see its strings:lol:

seriously since I introduced the yellow tang and coral beauty very early in the life of my tank I have never seen any hair algae since

Yeah... I'm going to post some small updates tonight... I need to get lighting for it. I'm thinking about transfering the T-5's to it until I can get the MH setups.

after the mods yesterday, my skimmer is finally kicking in great.

I'm hoping to at the very least get the reflectors and bulbs this week.

Updated Levels in the 55g tank... The bryopsis isn't coming back nearly as quick now. I've been running the lights in my fuge 24/7 and the caulerpa and cheato are growing like mad.

Temp: 80.8
SG: 1.024
pH: 8.15
dKH: 11
Ca: 360
Mag: 1350
Phosphate: Undetectable
Nitrate: Undetectable

Looks like you need to dump in some CA additive... 360 is what mine used to stay at with just IO salt and nothing added.

Glad your algae is fading away. It seems like almost everyone gets that at one time or another.

Thanks Kevin

Yeah I added some after I tested. It had been maintaining well between 400-460. I think I forgot to add it yesterday somehow. I 've been using DT's Ca, and the sweet spot seems to be 2 caps a day.

I'm going to try some 2 part on my 90g tank tonight. All my levels are down a little so I figure it's a good time to test it out.

if your levels are done---bring them up individually and then go on the two part. The two part is great for keeping levels where they are but harder to use to bring them up
eg use Kent turbo calcium for calcium and kent super dKH for alkalinity
there is a dosing calculator on the first thread of the chemistry forum which will tell you how much you need and how quick you can safely add it
