Lots of extra rock! What should I do with it?

I ordered dry rock then I came across a bargain for some live rock and bought it. Now I have a heap of rock that will not fit in the tank. What is the best thing to do? Put it in a big drum, fill it with sw and a pump and filter and leave it. Sell it? I'm new to this stuff so help please [emoji53]

Where do you live? Are there other reefers starting out near you? Do you belong to your local aquarium club? There's so many possibilities.

But yes, you can put them in a big plastic garbage pail and use them as a covered dark refugium. This will grow all sorts of sponges and worms and stuff that like to live in the dark and will do wonders to clean your tank water.

rocks

Dry them and put in tubs ... if u got a good deal and plan on going
bigger as u know the price is huge to buy lots of rock...or sell them
to fellow reefers for a going price per pound if u dont have the storage
space.... keep a few in case u need to switch out some rock in your tank at a later
date....

Ok will keep in a drum circulating with sw. I'm in Australia so the postage might be worth more than the rock to get to Ohio lol.

I can't attach it to my main tank. But I need a qt tank so would the best option be: to buy a cheap small tank, and let the tank filter through the rock in the drum. How much circulation would it need. What about water changes?

QT should normally not have any rock in it. Only because if the fish has anything, it might get into the rock. Then you would have to take care of the rock to make sure there is nothing in/on it.

Just a thought.

I would look for others around you and maybe offer it up to a school wanting to make a reef tank.

Can you not connect the rock bin as a remote refugium to your main system? I'd loop it in and out of your sump. Since you're not trying to raise corals in it you should be able to get away with 5x volume per hour.

I'll put it in a bin with a HOB and a power head. Ill try layer the rocks on shelves of grate. Would this need lighting and good temp control or dark and fluctuations with temps would be fine.

good temp control YES... no light. (unless there is something that requires light like coraline) Good flow... yes.

The rock won't fit in your sump but an inlet pipe and outlet pipe to/from a remote refugium w/ pump would fit.
