LPS for beginners ?

Candy cane/ trumpet coral is pretty good but you will have to feed them regularly.
Duncans are pretty easy as well

How about star polyps and zoanthids? I was thinking about starting off with them being I never had LPS or SPS before.

These are all great options. I would start with some Zoas and a Xenia (either pulsing or waving hand). If you go with a Xenia, be sure to isolate it on its own rock so it isn't able to rapidly spread and take over more real estate than you want :)

if you are looking for beginner corals, most softies will grow and spread well.

Here are my recommendations, and some will grow like weeds

GSP, Kenya tree, Toadstools and leathers, Xenias, mushrooms, zoas

some of these will spread so well you may want to put them on their own rock so they don't eventually overrun your tank.

Neither of the 2 beginer corals that you suggest are LPS, Which is what op was wanting to know about .

Branching euphyllia and micromussa lord (formally known as acan lord) are fairly hardy. Duncan's are the most resilient IME, they are also fun to feed and not aggressive to other coral.

Pretty much all of the LPS corals out there can be kept under the same kind of conditions IME, it's just a matter of finding the right spot & giving some of them plenty of room to stretch out.
Finding a healthy piece to start with is also important.

I agree with Haunt. I have had much success with my frogspawn and duncan, but really the candy cane has just exploded. The key is to find a spot they like and will open up all the way, but also enough flow to stimulate them and allow for food to travel past their mouths/stingers on a regular basis.

Some good suggestions above, along with some strange ones.

Easy LPS:
branching hammer
frogspawn
torch
favia/favites/goniastrea
Duncan
candycanes

Some to avoid:
wall hammers
elegance
goniopora/alveopora

Hi. Just curious why you suggest to avoid those? I am still a couple months from adding any coral, but want to know what to avoid and why, too. I like elegance, and was thinking it would be among my first additions. Thanks!:reading:

Easiest lps is branching hammer. Can be fragged by hand-breaking, relatively tough, high light. You will need to supplement calcium: set your params where you want them to stick -0--for this species, alk 8.3, cal 420, mg 1350, salinity 1.024; and put kalk into your topoff water, 2 tsp per gallon. Do that, glue it down firmly (it hates wobble) and don't blast it sideways with flow--just gentle tossing.

For the person who asked about elegance---best left to your second year of success with corals. Go for hardy euphyllia like hammer, avoid even torch, which is 'hot' and stings; and frog, which is a shade more fragile than hammer.

In general, people have difficulty keeping elegance corals. They just aren't very hardy. They probably don't transport well.

Wall hammers: They don't handle fragging or shipping very well. Since they are all one "wall" instead of different branches, any disease or infection easily spreads and quickly wipes out the colony.

Goniopora is also infamous for dying in captivity. Some aquacultured ones, like the red ORA ones, are circulating and seem to do well.

I was stating beginner corals, not specifically LPS... So my bad for not being more specific. But thanks for taking the time to call everyone out! [emoji61]

The op asked about LPS , and you shoot off about what you know and nothing about the question.
I corrected it so other newbies don't think your suggestions are LPS.
