ive been taking frags to my lfs for a bit where they get sold and i was getting some cash....

their reef tank is pretty rough, lots of algae, lots of cyano, but things tend to get sold fairly quickly. those that dont, well, end up dying.

instead of cash for frags i began to ask for dying corals.......and then taking pics as they are revied or....die.

first try was with a elegance that was all closed up at the lfs....

in two months....FAIL
you can see where i put the skeleton in the back

dedelegance.jpg

anyway, i traded a big frag of galaxia for the elegance

galaxia.jpg

one month later it looked like this

mothergalaxia.jpg

that is cyano not tissue that is red....all tissue on skeleton is receded......

two weeks later with some tlc (im serious, just two weeks)

galaxiasavedalreadycoloringup.jpg

good

okay, next i had a small frag of xenia (they CANT kill that) that i gave to them and they gave me this porite(?)

i didnt know it was an sps but i saw a one or two neon polyps sticking out and i thought it was cool and it still had some color on one side (the other was totally bleached, so i figured that was what it looked like when "really" dead

now here it is, again, two weeks.....
not a drastic change but....

2weekporite.jpg

btw what iis this? is it sps? i thought porites were super finiky...
my tank is all dirty with delicious fatty acids and proteins....

ok....
for one of my frags of xenia (another lfs) and some shrooms i got a brain.......i kinda had to explain the frags were worth it, she said it was healthy
i said "mam, thats his skeleton poking through his flesh and algae growing on him"

in the end it cost me the frags and 25 bucks (but i had to save em)

ill update soon on him and the rest

Enjoyed the pics and your thread. Keep us posted with updated pics.

I'm trying to bring back a candy cane from the dead. I was ready to take a hammer to it to make rubble for my blue spot jawfish. Upon further inspection, I noticed some fleshy tissue on some of the heads. So I thought, what the hey, I put it in the tank and put some brine shrimp on one of the heads, and it ate it! This "dead" frag has about 6 heads on it, so I'm trying the TLC method as well!

brain swole up, not such a testament to my skills but more a lack of on "someone" elses part

new people in my hospital
frogspawn

mushroom (told it fell on a rock.....it looks like it fell on a buzzsaw...) very cool shroom though

Very nice aquisitions and the prices seem to be just right ;)
As to the id, I lean more towards an avelopora than goniopora. Aveloporas have 12 tenticles while gonis have 24. Very nice find. BTW, they like nutrient rich water. It is one reason that the two species often have survival problems in sps tanks. Sounds like you have the right type of tank for it.

love them
frag them....
the brain.....when he is all better i might frag (around 6 months i think should be enough)
the hammer (its not a frogspawn) will def get fragged
i might just sell the alveopora....
the shroom totally gettting fragged,,,,
same with the galaxia,,,,,

i already fragged it and it was easy,,,,
im thinking about setting up a nano cube as a frag tank, but im poor. hence buying half dead coral...

heck im fixing to get a bleached out favia that is cool from the lfs, the owner wasnt there today so next time.....

If you have room, put another tank tied into your current system. With one return pump I was able to add a drilled 40g to my other tank's system. The lights in the canopy are 6500k GE "pigtail" bulbs that are sold at Wlamart and Target. I used individual shop spot light reflectors to house them. Although the colors would be better with actinics, it is still a decent color and the growth is great!

I'm always glad to see someone buying the sick and half dead corals from the pet store. A littles TLC is often all they need for a chance at life. Good job

which is kinda cool....

will post next month everyone unless i get another sick coral (which i need to stop doing)

plate is totally receded.....
all skeleton....gone.....

however the hammer has babies.......
the cynarina is huge....
the alveapora is getting brighter......

but i will wait about 6 months to chunck the plate.....it might have babies.....

last update with the cynarina (unless it colors up)
recovery1.jpg

hammer is still chillin (but it has two babies on its skeleton, but the mamma wont grow for me)
hammer2.jpg

the alveapora is just like it was, but greener and a little fuller.....
that buzzsawed shroom melted, but we will see if it left any presents for me (ie ill take a pic when one of em pops up somewhere on the rock, hopefully)
soooooo shroom = fail, elegance = fail,
galaxia = awesome, alve = awesome, cyan = awesome
hammer = nothing really doin
all that was 80$ total..........which i got my money back when i gave the galaxia back to the lfs which had gotten new t-5 lights (they listened! yeahhhh)

anyway, new hospital admits....
