LRS REEF Frenzy Food review

Hey reefers,

I was at my LFS a few days ago inquiring about live stock and food. They mentioned a product called LRS which is supposed to be a mix of everything, the new super food so to say.

I was wondering if anyone uses it and how you / fish like it?

Do you see any benefits to it?

It's more expensive but is it worth it?

I don't have any fish yet but just gathering information.

My fish and corals go absolutely frenzied for it!

But in all seriousness, its a great frozen food that is very low in phosphates(for a frozen food), and it has a little bit of everything in it. Everything from stuff for algae grazers, to hearty meaty bits for corals and fish.

I've been using it nearly exclusively for my corals every other day with no ill effects on my water parameters.

Great particle size. Awesome nutrition. Clean. I could only do better by making my own food.

An advantage of LRS is that you don't necessarily need to strain it first. It is frozen in it's own juices rather than a preservative of any time. Most frozen foods need to be thawed and strained (I cant think of the right term right now).

Now, a lot of people will still do this with LRS. I personally don't, I just thaw it in a little cup of tank water and dump it in. I've had fantastic success with LRS. Now if my tank wouldn't have died from an ich outbreak, they'd still be loving it...

Ridiculously overpriced, come on? What are you eating that cost $80 a pound, this hobby really does produce a sucker a minute.

who are you quoting cougareyes?

Just my own thoughts, I like doing the absolute best for my tanks. I research and am willing to spend top dollar for anything I think I will get positive results. But come on, this product is just preying on people.

My fish loves the food. It is not more expensive. In fact, I think it is a lot cheaper than cubed trays. It is densely packed and last long time.

I like the large size bag, and I don't like the nano sized bag. I always buy the large bag, but last time I was in the LFS they only had the nano size. The guy told me it is exactly the same as the large bag in smaller package. Not true. The food inside the nano bag is more finely chopped. Too small for my medium sized fishes.

Please enlighten me/us on how it is preying on people? I use LRS in my reef, heavily feed, and have zero issues with algae or phosphates that I did with other "better" brand frozen foods. It is loaded with PE Mysis, Seaweed, and other items not found in other foods unless you buy individually. It's great to by cynical but unless you have first hand experience it is best to remain hush about a product.

Interested in what you feed your tank.

Let's see a 4oz pack including moisture weight for $20. That's $80 a pound, subtract your moisture weight and bet you're at a $100/lb. Likelihood this is not even human grade ingredients. Add processing and packaging, that's a hell of a profit. In comparison you can buy human grade ingredients and enrich them how ever you would like and the cost would be about $2-3 for the same 4oz. Sorry but that is quite ridiculous, if you are willing to spend that - go for it. It's all relative, I'm ok buying a fish for $200; others think that's ridiculous.

we are a country that buys bottled water but shrills over the price of gas. Go figure

So you have a subjective opinion rather than an objective one over the LRS food. First, their 8oz package is $20. Second, there aren't many who have the time, inclination, or an understanding wife to blend their own food and then freeze it. I would rather spend $20 on a high quality, well known and reviewed food than spend an hour blending my own ingredients, packaging, and then cleaning out our blender (which wouldn't happen because my wife would kill me).

I feed triggers, puffer, angel, tusk; I buy 1 lb each fresh human grade shrimp, scallops, and squid; 3 lbs for about $20. It takes way less than an hour to chop up and package for the freezer. I use less than $10 of zoe and selcon to enrich the entire 3 lbs. So for 3 lbs of fresh human grade enriched chunky seafood for my carnivores it cost me roughly $30. Comparing a 4 oz. LFS carnivore diet from my lfs at $20, it cost me $2.50 for 4 oz with no water weight and less than an hour to prepare for about 3 months. It would cost me about $250 in LFS for the same results. My fish are happy, vibrant, energetic and go completely nuts when I feed them. I also feed other stuff and have other tanks and fish that I feed.

Well my original question was about the LFS food itself, not a debate between prices and making your own.

On that note, do you need to add anything to the LFS or is it good for all fish? Would I need to buy any supplementals such as flake or seaweed food?

I don't mind paying 20$ for the package. With 3 kids at home, one 7 weeks old, a full time job where I'm on the road 50% of the time I would rather buy already made. Hell Half my weekly grocery is already prepared food for my family and I.

For me time is of the essence.

That's why I buy it... I made my own one and got the not going to happen again in the food processed look from my wife. I'll pay extra for that.

I think my wife would be ok with it as long as it is human grade food AND I wash heavily when I'm done. If that only happened once every couple months and I was saving a bunch of money, she'd probably applaud my efforts. That being said, I like LRS. I use the nano because I have a nano and small fish. My LFS uses it for picky eaters like Copperband Butterflies and Moorish Idols and says they all eat it quickly without turning up their noses. I only go to this LFS because he is honest, has the best selection around and his prices beat most of other places in town, plus he'll sit and talk with you for hours. I have no reason to believe he was lying to me, because I wasn't showing interest in LRS at the time, he was just sharing his experience with it because he was excited about it. My fish certainly go bonkers over it. I only feed it as a treat once in a while, but they love it.
