Lukinrats 75 gallon tank thread!!!

I took a few shots of some of the frags that I thought looked a little better

Here a little video I shot with my Vortech making a wave

 Some of us DO see it ;)

Loved the video of the wave... which Vortech are you running, how many (I see one in the FTS) and on what mode? What is the turnover from your sump?

I've been having issues with water movement even running a Koralia 1 (completely useless) and 3x Tunze Nanostream 6025s (non-controllable, but two of them have been flow modded to give me 1100ish gph each) and I really want mid to high flow with a nice back and forth motion like you have, as much as I'd hate to spend that much on a controllable pump, it would be nice to get most of the heat from powerheads out of my tank...

Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to see the tank when those frags grow in (everything in my tank is a frag, so I've got 6 months to a year before it even starts looking nice ;))

Thanks my friend... I am running the MP40W... I just upgraded from the gen 1 vortech, got it back from Ecotech Friday... The only way to make the wave with one Vtech is short pulse mode... You just have to get it set right... It has to pulse, and the flow from the pulse has to bounce off the other side of the tank... Then when it comes back towards the vortech, it has to pulse again just in time to meet the first pulse, and push it back to the other side of the tank again.

You should probably try to do what this guy did with his Tunze

I just hope that I can keep everything happy long enough for it to grow... BTW, I have the Vortech on another mode now, I am just changing it about every 6 hours... I guess that is about as random as I can ever get

Nathan, what is the wire that is tied around your spray bar in the video?

Corals look good to me. :)

I think you need to make some aragacrete walls for the back so your rockwork looks like it goes to the top rather than see the blue painted glass. Either that, or you could get those frag-mags to mount corals on the glass.

That is my overflow, remember, like the one you tried on your angled tank:D

Anyway, the wire is my grounding probe wire... I know how suction cups are, and I know that one of these days it will become sort of hard and not want to stick... So anyway, I just wrapped the cord around the overflow one time, incase the suction cup gives loose

Thanks, I am working hard... You will be proud to see my Suncoral pretty soon... It has been fed every night, since you posted the picture of yours

Agreed!!!:) ... However, if you were to look back at the first of the thread, you will see that I had rocks stacked all the way up... Everybody was telling me that I needed to leave some room for corals to grow out... So, I have just recently redone the scape... I think I like it now, but I will probably do just what you are suggesting... I will either use frag mags, and start growing on those, or I will get some of those magnetic live rocks, made by the same company... Right now, I just want to see how the SPS want to grow, so that I will be able to figure out which route to go... I do not want to start growing a whole bunch of corals on the back wall, just to have them start to shade everything else... I have thought about trying to get zoos to grow on the back, since the PVC overflow shades whatever is underneath... If not zoos, then maybe I could get GSP to cover the back wall... Right now though, I am just kind of getting my feet wet, and trying to learn what the behaviors will be... Quite honestly, I will probably not keep this tank for very much longer... I am really trying to see if I can handle reefs, and I am sure that I can, so far:rolleyes: ... My plan is to get a larger tank, like a 150 - 180 gallon... I have a perfect spot to put it in the wall... I can install it in the dining room wall, where it can be seen almost anywhere... The laundry is behind it, and is actually pretty large... I am planning on moving the laundry room to another location... Then I can use the room behind the tank... That is my grand plan, so we will see!!! If I can keep folks interested in what I have going on right now, then I will hopefully repay everyones help, by doing a large in wall tank thread

Thanks for the advice, which will likely happen pretty soon, just bear with me because I will need opinions

Can anyone tell me what these are? I have seen them pop up recently, as in the last 2 weeks... I have no idea, but they are sort of nice looking

unknown8-30-08.jpg

I posted this a page or two back... I think it was missed in the middle of everything else, but I am still wondering what these are... Anyone know?

Melev, are these in your ID page somewhere?

Thanks Melev!!! I love them, and they are growing on several different rocks

BTW, did you notice that I answered your question from page 5, about the wire you saw wrapped around my overflow?

Yep, thanks for that. If you had magnet ties, it would be more secure that a suction cup.

Ya, I am going to get some small magnets from gaussboys.com for it... BTW check out how I clean my glass

Those are the 60lb pulling force magnets from gaussboys.com, with velcro on them... Very nimble, and when you get up next to the silicone, and go up and down, they act like little sanders... Since the velcro piece on it is square, it makes it spin, cleaning up next to the silicone easily

Anyway, just thought I would share that... I also use them to hold my Maxi Mods to the aquarium... Very handy to have around the house, but watch out, because they are strong... If you get one within a foot of another without paying attention, they will become one in the blink of an eye... If your finger is in the way @ that particular moment.........#$%@:mad2:

I have been sitting around thinking about the fact that I have such a small tank, and that I need to seriously consider the corals that I put... My goal is really to have an SPS tank, because that is mostly what I like... So.................... I am going to let the corals that I have in my tank now, grow a bit, and use them to kind of gauge what shape my tank is in

What I am getting to is, that I want to only put rare or collectable SPS in this tank... I figure that I have a limited # of corals that I can put in here anyway... I am thinking maybe 20-25 different SPS

I am always seeing people who sell corals, in the selling forum, that have some dudes name attached to them... Tyree, Mike Paletta, etc, etc

So what is the deal with that... Who decides that these corals are special, and must cost so much... How do you only put corals of a certain lineage in your tank... Where do you get these things?

Should I just go for an ORA only SPS tank?

Hey N8,

Actually, I commented on that same subject not too long ago in the LPS forum:

What does it mean for a chalice to be "lineaged"?

As noted by some, it's crap and a way to get extra $$$... and noted by others, it is a way to say where the coral comes from... ORA is a lineage, Tyree is a lineage (some of the Reef Farmers stuff is just kept/grown out by Tyree... others "found" it), ATL, Mike P, Tubs etc.

Really, if you go buy a so-so brown Acro or whatever, and it turns out to be a BEAUTIFUL color (especially if it is an unusual color combo for the type of Acro/whatever and doubly if it is one of a kind) then it could be the Lukinrats Pink Polka Dotted Green Striped Acropora realycoolus or whatever... If you read enough "show me your ___" threads, you will notice some people saying "Wow that ORA blankety-blank looks just like ATLs thus-n-such" too, so very similar color morphs can have two names (or the same coral might be sold under two lineages)

I've got a frag of Mike P's "Purple Porites" (mine is sky blue so far  ) that I bought from Live Aquaria... a bit harder to prove that lineage IMO, but I bought it for the color, not the name... if I ever frag it, I'll say "Mike P's Purple Porites- purchased from Dr.F&S" and leave it at that...

I mean, I just bought a Favia frag from Dr. Mac called "RARE Spinkie Mazoola Favia"... what the heck is a Spinkie Mazoola?? It's so rare that the only place "Spinkie Mazoola" showed up on google was Dr. Mac's site  But it was an interesting color morph and the name made me laugh

I'd say chose by what looks good to your eye (that's what I have started doing now, and some of my less pretty corals will go away as I begin to run out of room)...

I ordered some ORA pieces yesterday (Rose mille, Nathan's mille, Hawkin's Blue and Purple Plasma), got some non-lineaged frags from Miguel at Fraggle Reef when I first started the tank (mimic of the Tyree LE Blue Chalice and mimic of Tubs Purple Polyped Green Birdsnest) , some beautiful frags from copps here on RC (if I sell frags of those, I'll call them something like "Copps Turquoise A. hoek", for example... thus creating a lineage on my own :D) and some fairly nice stuff from Dr.F&S and other e-tailers... Slowly learning what I like... heck, when I started the tank, I didn't even care for the looks of most Acros, now I LOVE them!!

Also remember, some of the older ORA stuff is nice looking but much cheaper than the newer super color morphs (saw a Chip's Acro frag priced at $29)... I'm looking for a ORA Scripps Mille right now, but everyone is out and told me ORA hasn't shipped any in over a month... I really want a piece because I love the way it looks, so I'll see if anyone on RC has a frag for sale...

Prices and interests change, so just because you pay $100 for a frag doesn't mean it will be worth even half that when it grows large enough to frag from your tank

I understand the limited room issue as I'm in the same boat... I'm just going to cull whatever ends up not as sexy to MY eyes, and pick things I like (I want tons of different A. millepora color morphs, as that is currently one of my favorite SPS... and I ordered the ORA Purple Plasma even though it was $70, because I like what I've seen so far of that coral and want to see what it grows into in my care)

Ok, so what are YOU interested in???

Ya, I have been reading up a little bit on all of this... Especially the thread called "does lineage matter to you"

LOL!!! I am afraid that we have come too late in the game... I am sure that there will not be any chance of me naming a coral

I think I am going to go with an ORA/Copps only SPS tank... I got some frags from Copps, and I love them, however I am afraid that I did not get some of the more desirable ones he had... I bought some of the cheaper ones, but they are still nice

Ok, so what are YOU interested in???

Well, I can tell you that I am not Acro crazy as most people seem to be... I really like montis, millis, and poccis a whole lot more... I am only a casual LPS and Softie lover... I tried to go that route earlier, but I really could not find many that I liked... I like hammer coral, and frogspawn... Suncoral, and Aussies... Maybe some others... I will probably fill my tank to the brim with the 3 species that I listed above (SPS)... I am sure that I will end up getting some acros, but to this point, I have not had much success with them

Here is an update on the frags in my tank... They are doing absolutely wonderful now!!! I started KZ Aminos, but I am not sure if they are the sole reason for the coloring, or if they just have a hand in it... I had been running my skimmer very seldom, and was not using PO4 removal... I was feeding heavy as well, but I got the Aminos last Friday, and that is when things started to change drastically... I don't know, but I have to say that it is true that aminos help color... Now I just need something for rapid growth:lol:

Well, I am in Atlanta... I am going to go to Macna in the morning to see what it is all about... I hope they let me in:lol:

Maybe I will get some pictures worth putting up... I know of about 3 frags that I am bringing back home with me, and there is no telling what else I will end up with

I will post things tomorrow night to let you guys know what I think, but I am betting it is going to be pretty cool
