Lukinrats 75 gallon tank thread!!!

Well, I made it back from the ATL, alive!!! It was fun, and the family and I had a good time just messing around... I am pretty bad at remembering to take pictures, but I did shoot a few... It seemed like everytime I reached for a camera to take pictures, I did not have one because I layed it down when getting my little girl out of the car seat... Oh well!!! Here are the few shots that I did get

There was this little shark decoration by Marco Rocks, I think, that my little girl was in love with

We made it up to the Sundial restaurant that was on the 72nd floor of the Westin Hotel, where Macna was held... The floor of the restaurant rotated slowly, so that you can get a good look at Atlanta... It took it 1 hour and 5 minutes to make 1 complete revolution

We also went to the Georgia Aquarium, but were kicked out after being in there for only 30 minutes... What a rip off!!! We did get to see the only whale sharks that live in captivity, and saw some lucky tourists who got to Scuba in the tank with them

At the trade show, I could not stay away from ORA's display, and their zero edge tank

I feel that my first Macna was a good one, and I can see why people would want to go... Hopefully I can go again next year, but next time, I want to do the whole experience... The speakers, workshops, banquets, etc... I only did the trade show this year, but I still enjoyed that... It really gives you a better idea about the community of reefers... For me, it also allowed me to be able to see a lot of things, up close... Things that I have never really seen before in person

I also got to meet a good many RC members while I was there, and I really enjoyed being able to put faces with those online A.K.As... I got a chance to meet Melev for just a second... Just before the family and I left the G.Aquarium, we were messing around in the gift shop, and we ran into Copps or (John Coppolino)... I purchased the beautiful frags, that I have been posting pictures of lately, from John... John has been a very nice guy, who is willing to help and deal with any questions you have after getting frags from him... I could not have expected a nicer guy... He was very friendly when we ran into each other at the Aquarium, and he stood around for a while talking to my wife and daughter!!! This is one of the first things I notice about people... I am often bothered by the fact that some people will talk to you, and totally ignore the family that is standing with you... John definitely did not do that, he was a gentleman!!!

A couple of months ago, I was on RC trying to get someone to rent me a Par meter for a couple of days:bum:... I was offering $60 for just a couple of days use, and I would paypal the full amount until I returned the unit safely... To my surprise, I had no takers on that offer... I did end up getting a better offer, from GCarroll Greg Carroll... He said " why don't you just buy a meter, and when You get done with it, I will buy it from you, minus the $60... This was essentially the same thing that I had offered, but just reversed... I have been using it to check out my lighting, and the other day when I talked to Greg, he said that he was going to be at Macna with frags from his tank... I decided that I would like to have him pay me with some of those frags, instead of cash... Greg has some really nice corals in his tank, and I consider myself lucky to get some frags of them for my tank... It was great to meet Greg, he is a super nice guy, and I enjoyed just hanging around and absorbing things from him as we talked... I am going to take some pictures of the frags when I get home tonight... I got them in the tank too late last night to worry with pictures, but I did snap a few pics while the frags were still in Greg's frag tank... Here is a list:

Pink Lemonade

Nathan, before you buy that PAR meter, shoot me a PM. It is something I talked about with Greg at MACNA.

I'm glad you had a good time.

When I went to the G.A. in April, I got there at 3pm and by 5pm it was time to leave. Fortunately, two hours was perfect for my visit. This trip, I spent a good 30 minutes in the Titanic exhibit, which was very interesting to me. However, I spent the majority of my time with the Ocean Encounter section, as it is captivating. The reef was nice, but it needs more time to grow in.

Getting back to Macna... While I was visiting with Greg and picking out my corals, I got to meet John Warner, owner of Warner Marine... I use several things made by Warner, and bought some more things from him after seeing what they do for Greg's corals... I am here to tell you that Warner makes some really nice skimmers... They had one that was about the same size as the one I have, but it had a modded Sedra 9000 on it... This thing was an absolute beast!!!
It was skimming some stuff out of the water that probably would not get skimmed by some other skimmers... The water it was skimming could not have been all that dirty, since it was just water from Greg's frag tank... It did get a lot skimmed out tho, and then, whatever was in the cup Sunday morning, was poured back into the water... The skimmer pulled it out in less than 2 minutes, and it was just as dark as it was before... I can not believe that I got my skimmer last year, and then had to look at this one outperforming it... I may try to get me a modded Sedra like they were using, and then replace my Aquabees:lol:   ... The way I understood it from Mr. Warner... He uses only reagent grade chemicals in all of his supplements, filter media, and whatever else he may sell... If I am not mistaken, reagent grade is as high purity as you can get... I was very impressed by Warner Marine:eek2: :eek1:

I buy a lot of stuff from Aquarium Specialty too, so I really enjoyed meeting Scott Groseclose (owner)... I have dealt with him through email, and on the phone, so it was nice to put a name with that face too... Scott is a very nice guy, and he really strives to sell only the best of the best... Every order I have ever made @ Aquarium Specialty has come to me very quickly, and always packed really well... Communication throughout the order is great as well!!! I purchased an Acan frag from Scott, a few weeks ago... After it had healed, and was ready to ship to me, I suggested that he just bring it to Macna and I could pick it up there... He did, and I did, and to me you just can't ask for much more from a company

I had the opportunity lately to deal pretty closely with Ecotech Marine... I had my Vortech Gen 1 repaired and upgraded recently, and this is another excellent company to deal with... They were very generous about the repairs that I needed on the pump, so right now, I am a religious Ecotech Marine supporter... I even bought a second MP40W, this weekend at Macna... I don't see any reason that I would ever change my preference here... Ecotech seems to always strive for products that can be upgraded, instead of just becoming obsolete... That is very respectable in my opinion... I was able to meet Eric and Patrick... Both very nice guys!!!

I could probably go on and on, but I will stop here... I think folks will get the idea, I had a good time just meeting people, and looking at all the Reef products that are available to me... Now that I got that out of the way, I will look forward to enjoying the whole experience @ the next Macna

Later,

So, I am @ home finally... Been hanging around work all day, and wanting to come home and check on the new frags... I walked in, and right off the bat, I was rewarded with some beautiful looking corals!!!
I am so pleased with my selection, so far, that I might not buy another piece for quite a while... I bet some people will find that hard to believe, and they will probably be right, but right now I just want to sit back and enjoy what I have

Here are some better pictures of the corals that I got from GCarroll... I was in a hurry when I was taking the pictures of them in his frag tank... I did not have anything white that I could set the while balance with either, so these definitely do them more justice

Well I took your advice Hahn... While I was at Macna, I picked up some of those deep water rocks for the back wall of my tank... I really like them!!! Even though I still can't take a decent FTS... Here is one that gives an idea

DSCF3007.jpg

One concern that I have read about, and I think it was Hahn with the concern, is that the rocks were not strong enough to support large colonies... I really do not have to worry about that, because these sort of sit on top of my live rock, but they seem pretty strong... I put the magnets on them to get them in the tank, and then I moved them around to where I wanted them... I have 1/2" glass on my tank, and as I moved the rocks around, the magnets on the outside just moved with them... I thought that they would fall off, but they did not... I would think that, if they ever did start to become overloaded, you could probably get a magnet with a stronger pull to go on the outside

If you put encrusting Montipora, zoanthids, etc... it will be fine. If you put a A. millepora colony on there, that could be interesting.

Of course, you can always frag off the that mag-rock and leave something behind to start anew if it got too heavy.

I was thinking about taking a couple of my 65 lb pulling force magnets when I get home, and trying them as the magnets on the outside... I bet they will give a stronger hold

I will let know!!!

Macna Corals

Macna Corals

Two Non-GCarroll Corals

Two Non-GCarroll Corals

Here are two of the corals that I did not get from Greg, but that I brought home from Macna... The first one (SPS) is a coral I grabbed at the Mr. Coral booth, as I was walking out... It looked fine when it was bagged, but by the time we had made it Birmingham (3 hours from ATL), it had RTN @ the base... I had it in an insulated box, and carried it with me to only climate controlled places... I got it home, and fragged the bad tissue off, and it looks really good now... I do not know what it is, but I think it looks pretty nice... Anybody got any idea ???

Unknown.jpg

This one came from Aquarium Specialty... I had ordered it from them about a month before, and Scott and I had been waiting on the temperatures to get a little better before shipping... We then decided that he would bring it down to Atlanta since we were both going to be there.

It was pretty much colorless, when I got it, but after regular feedings for the past week, it is starting to show some improvement... I only bought 2 polyps of this coral, but when I picked it up, it had 2 large polyps, and 3-4 more smaller ones... I think this is going to be a spectacular looking coral... It is my first Acan

I want to do a little side by side action for this post... Some of the corals I have had for a while, are starting to show some growth, and I want to see how much...So, this is more for my purposes, but maybe some of the folks that actually look at my posts can enjoy it too!!!

These are Copps frags

Hey N8,
Nice growth on your Copps frags... mine are just starting to show the tiniest bit of encrusting... can't wait to see what they look like in a few months

Nice Acan!! That should look great when it grows out and finishes coloring up... I've got my first Micro frag (2 polyps) that I'm hoping will grow in nicely, and I've got my eye on one or two Acans for next months coral budget... very cool corals IMO...

Don't know what to tell you about your Mr. Coral frag... RTN in that short of time makes me think wild collected piece... from what I've read here on RC, they don't do as well with shipping, so my guess is the move to MACNA followed by the trip to your tank was enough to stress the frag out badly... hope it pulls through for ya!!

Your stuff from Greg looks good too... I want a few of those myself!! (lime in the sky, acroberry and ultimate efflo)

I'm up to 40+ frags now... at this rate I'm gonna need a bigger tank sooner than I'd thought  Heck, it's enough to make me want 3 tanks... one for SPS, one for LPS and a Zoa tank (saw a Zoa only tank on here once, very sexy looking IMO)... I'm think I'm gonna need a second job :D

I finally got a mandarine for my tank, and I have been stressing over whether I had enough for it to eat or not... Well last night, I was feeding my suncoral and acan, and I saw all these little critters up at the surface... I am not sure if they are copepods or mysis or what... I took a little video and thought that someone could tell me

They look like itty bitty helicopters

Those look like baby peppermint shrimp to me. Your reef will eat them.

Thanks Marc... I love the videos... I guess those might be skunk cleaners since I do not have any peppermints, but I have 2 of the skunks... There certainly are a bunch of them in my fuge now though, or there were last night... When I turned my return back on, I saw some of them taking a ride down the waterslide

I am going to do a little update... I think that this is really just for my purposes, so that I can have a record of things, as I go forward... Reason I am saying that, is that I am sure most of what I will post, will seem sort of trivial/meaningless, so just disregard if you guys want

9/18/08: Did some mesh modding on my skimmer pumps last night... Strange results were to follow... I had done one of them earlier in the week... My goal was to get each of my Aquabees to pull 500 L/H of air... When I did the first one I used two pieces of Enkamat, and I put them right on top of the pins of the pinwheel... I pulled them pretty tight with low test fishing line... The first piece that I put on the impeller was cut out in the center, so that I could get the mesh to push all the way down among the pins... The second piece, I just sat on top, and found a good hole for the ceramic rod to go through... Pulled it all down real tight, and then started to trim the mesh down... I only trimmed the mesh down enough that it would not rub on any part of the volute... I stuck her in, and fired it up... When I hooked it to the scfh meter, the little indicator ball was bouncing up and down a bit, right in between 18 and 20... So I am calling it 17.75 scfh, because that = 502 L/H of air… Since my goal is 1000 from the two pumps I called that good… So last night I decided to do the other pump, and I did it exactly like the other one, only this one would only register around a 15 on the meter… Needless to say, I was not happy
I pulled the impeller to inspect it, and it looked exactly like the other one, so I studied it a little while longer and decided that maybe this pump just needed an extra layer… I re-did the mesh mod, and did it exactly like the first one, except I used 3 layers of mesh… I had to trim the mesh down a little bit more than I did on the first one, because the pump would not start unless I did… I hooked this one up to the meter, and amazingly it was registering the same… Around 18-20 scfh, but I am calling this one 17.75 as well… So my skimmer is now a 1000 L/H +++, skimmer… I can see the difference it made, and I even changed the configuration of the plumbing on the inside
I went to Lowe’s and bought some ½” elbows, and a piece of ½” PVC… The original plumbing had the input just shooting straight against the opposite side, and it had 45 degree elbows on the output of the re-circulating pumps... This seemed to cause problems, because the water entering the skimmer seemed to disturb the bubbles as they were reacting with the water... The input was blowing right through the middle of them… I changed the input plumbing, so that it would put the water down towards the input of the recircs… I added a 90 degree elbow pointing straight down, and a short piece of PVC, so that the water would not enter the body until it was down there… The way it was, I think it was causing too much turbulence… On the outputs of the Aquabees, I also put 90 degree elbows pointing straight down, so that the bubbles would have much more contact time… I think this will make the skimmer much more efficient than it was… The thing that is so good about that, is that it was really efficient to begin with, so my tank should be that much more clean from now on… This should really help when I have it filled to capacity

9/19/08: I am still using the KZ Aminos, with great results so far… I have also added another supplement to the mix… I picked up some Elos Pro Skimmer… I think it may be similar to the Aminos in a way, but is marketed as a “coral energizer”… It calls for 3 drops per 26 gallons of true water volume… I started supplementing it the day I got home from Macna, but I started by adding only 1 drop total… I am slowly working my way up, and plan to stop at the point that gives the best results, and that is assuming that I see any… If I get to a certain point, and can see no benefit , then I will stop using it… Right now, I am up to 4 drops total… I plan to move up to the 5th drop today… Between the two supplements, one of them is working quite well, as my corals are really colorful at this point… I mean, before the Aminos, my corals really were washed out looking… Even when they were not bleached, they just seemed to not be happy… They are all very very happy right now… They have amazing colors, and SUPER polyp extension… I guess I can’t ask for more than that, unless I was to ask for a more rapid growth… However, I enjoy watching them change slowly, so I would not even think to be wishing for rapid growth

I guess that is really all I have for now… I have had no issues, events, or happenings with the system… It just seems to be existing happily for now, and I hope it stays that way… I continue to use limewater for all top off, and I add 2 teaspoons of baking soda every 24 hours to keep my Alkalinity stable… I use carbon in a bag, and it is tumbled around in the skimmer compartment of my sump, by a maxi mod... I use Warner Phosar in a TLF reactor, and there is barely a trickle moving through it right now... I am thinking of putting some carbon in an additional reactor, and then running the output from the GFO through it... This is just a thought, so that any harmful chemicals that may come from the GFO, could possibly be removed by the carbon... We will see how long it takes me to get that done ;) ... The chaeto in my fuge has finally started to grow, but if I have one complaint about my system, it would be the fuge... Man does that thing stay dirty... I really can't stand it, and want to clean it every time I look at it... The only thing that stops me is that I feel that would defeat the purpose of the thing... I would just end up sucking any life from there, right back out into a drain

9/19/08: Oh, one more thing... I did add one fish to my display this week... I added a mandarin, and boy is that one beautiful fish... The only problem that I have is that this fish will not stop hiding... I can't stand the fact that I have such a beautiful fish in my tank, and it never comes out  ... I mean, are these fish always like that, or did I just get a bad one?

NathanS
