Lukinrats 75 gallon tank thread!!!

Mandarins are quiet fish, and may hide quite a bit. They are scouring your rockwork for food, and tend to come out in the open during the actinic (dusk) period. If you have a fish bothering it, it will be less likely to come out. Mine is 3 years old, and still only comes out a little because the Six Line is always ready to run her off. Annoying, to say the least.

UPDATE

UPDATE

Well, it has been a bit since I have updated my thread... I was really gung ho about it for a while, but figured I would slow down, since it really did not seem like it was being read much... I have a couple of things to mention, and hopefully I can get some feedback/advice about these things

#1... I had my first attack from a pest... I had some white fuzzy looking stuff on several of my montis... I could not figure out what this stuff was, but it did not look as though my corals liked it... I quickly PM'ed GCarroll to see if he knew, and I explained the white feathery looking things... He immediately said nudis, and then I agreed... So, I removed all my montis, even though it seemed to only be on the branching typed ones, and gave them all a bath in Revive... I put them in the mixture, and then one by one, I bathed them with a pipette until I could not see any more nudis... Then I left them all in for about a total of 12-15 minutes each... This seems to have taken care of the problem, but I am keeping a close eye :hmm6:

#2... After my original and very rapid bloom of coralline was over, I started noticing this fuzzy looking stuff growing on it... It is very short and sort of brown colored, probably 1/8" or less in length... It is all over my rocks, but does not seem to cause any problem what so ever... Now it seems as though coralline is starting to grow on it too, as it is not so brown anymore, but sort of grey maybe... I have no problems with it, and figured that it was something sort of normal, and that it could not be nuisance... I have no idea if I am right, and I have looked all over for an ID on it... The only thing I have found that seems similar to what I am describing, was in a thread on RC... According to some of the posters to that thread, it is a pest... This surprised me, but I guess I could see how some would think of it that way... Here is the picture that was posted in that thread... Hopefully I can get some advice on this, so that if I need to get rid of it, I will know... I also wanted to mention that it only seems to grow on places that have coralline growth... I scraped my glass the other night, and the large chunks of coralline that I pulled out were covered in it like it was a mat

Otherwise, my tank is doing awesome, and all of my SPS corals seem to be thriving... I hope it can stay that way

I don't know why more people don't post to your thread, unless it's because of your avatar. Should your daughter be pole dancing that young?

That red stuff that seems to be a branching algae is rather brittle, right? I'd scrape it off and siphon it out. Some fish may eat it, and it does seem to come in waves.

Rofl... change your avatar

Nice thread, very interesting, and great collection of corals. Keep up the good information and the great pictures.

It's funny that turned out that way... I actually put that picture up, because that picture was taken up @ the top of the hotel @ Macna... The Sundial restaurant in Atlanta

I will do my best to get some pictures up this weekend... I have been having trouble finding my SD card

Thanks for the replies BTW!!!

Mykel, I looked all through that page, and never could find that particular stuff... As for the algae sucking, I dont know... It really does not seem to be that bad... Anyone who was not a reefer would just think it was normal... It really does not look bad at all... I will take some pictures, so you can see what I mean

BTW, I forgot to mention that I tried what Melev suggested in his reply... What I found is that it does not scrape off very easily... It is so short that you can't grab it between your thumb and pointer finger... If you do find a way to get it off, then you will pull any coralline that has grown, off with it

I really think I will just leave it, and adopt Paul B's theory... From what I remember reading in his thread is that he has always just let Algae blooms run their course... He thinks that a tank goes through so many algae blooms, just as a matter of course... This stuff that I have in my tank seems to have only grown on existing coralline, and has not encroached on any of my corals... In addition to it not causing any problems, it really is not unsightly or anything... I mainly was looking for an ID, so that I could make sure it was not anything bad.

Ok... I got it done now... I have always struggled with making the avatar 150 x 150 pixels, and still have it stay around 8kb... I struggle no more... I downloaded Infanview to resize them with, and installed a plug in from them that lets you specify the file size when you save it... Worked like a charm, and now my avatar looks good to me

Wait, no more pole dancer? What have I done?! ROFL

Well, it was replaced with a different sin. It's all good. :p

Ok guys... I have somehow misplaced my SD card, and the reader that I need to use to get the pictures from it... I tried all weekend to take some updated pictures, but my efforts were not rewarded... I will get them though!!!

Update, about the aforementioned nudi experience: I found out late last night that all my dipping did not work like I planned... The thing that baffles me is that both times, I have only found them to be on my monti spumosa, and undata... I seem to remember reading that the things only eat certain branching montis... I don't know if that is accurate, so if anyone has info on that please let me know... Last night, I dipped every monti in my tank, with the exception of my monti spongodes... This coral has grown rapidly, and attached itself firmly to a large rock... Should I remove the whole rock, and dip it along with the coral???

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Thanks,
NathanS

FINALLY AN UPDATE W/ PICTURES

FINALLY AN UPDATE W/ PICTURES

Well, I finally found all my camera paraphernalia, and a short lull that would allow me to take some pictures... I hope, one day, to learn how to take good pictures... Until then, I guess these will have to do

I am going to do my best to put comparison photos, next to each other in my post... Hopefully it will work out... The comparison will cover exactly 2 months... The pictures that I put up, right after I got home from Macna, and then the ones I took last night

I am going to start with the worst of them all... My Undata that was attacked by nudis:mad:
I did my best to save what I could, and is now looking much better

This is the only new one that I have... I saw it at the LFS, that I hate going to... It looked aweful, but I tried it anyway... It is really looking better now

Ok, now I know that you guys can see that brushy, or fuzzy looking stuff that has blanketed my coralline... I don't think it is hurting anything, and the looks do not bother me, but I still want to ask about what it is, and whether or not I should be doing something about it

I also have some bubble algae in the tank, in a few spots... What is the best way to get rid of it... I know I should not bust it open, lest it spread everywhere

Any suggestions about these issues, or any other replies about anything else, would be awesome

Your tank is looking great. I'm jelous I recently received a sun coral and it does not look good. I have read about how to care for them and need to start doing it. Your corals look very happy and are coloring up nicly.

Thank you so much for the reply... I was beginning to think that I put took, and then posted all those pictures, just so I could look at them... I hope to get a decent full tank shot @ some point... I just recently added the 2 fish that I have had in QT, to my display... They were a yellow tang, and a lyretail anthias, both very beautiful

I also picked up a very healthy Sailfin tang from PETCO...I was traveling back from Tuscaloosa, Al and had to go through Meridian Mississippi... I usually do not frequent Meridian, even though it is 45-50 miles away... I will probably go to that PETCO next time I want to look for a fish... I have never been in one, and I was very surprised at the neat display, and healthy looking fish... They had about 5 tangs in all, and they all looked happy... This is something that I have never seen @ the LFS in my area
