Luminarcs -- Excellent!

Thanks RER.

Mojo, are you around? How long have you been using them?

Are you using the glass too?

Ordering today so I need to know.

Thanks,

Todd

I just purchased two of the venting ones and I'll post pictures when I have them installed this weekend. I plan on using clothes dryer ducting and a 5 inch computer fan to cool them down.

Thanks Ricka. Did you get the glass shields too?

Todd

Yep. I'm disappointed because they are just regular glass. I'm going to talk to the local glass shop about getting a low iron equivilant.

The bulbs are 400W Radiums. Here are some shots:

And the reflectors themselves:

This is quite a long thread, and I'm not going to read the whole mess, but on the chance that it hasn't been mentioned to protect these reflectors I just ordered two pieces of 18" square 1/8" glass. There are convenient holes in the reflector that will allow for me to insert these pieces of glass and hold them in place with some pieces of wire. I've learned the hard way that small amounts salt spray over the years will seriously corrode any reflectors. It's a lot easier to clean glass, or if the glass is permanently damaged, a lot cheaper to replace the $8 piece of glass than the $100 reflector.

FWIW, here's the lighting system I set up for my 400 gallon (8'x3'x30inch deep) tank:

The system was built using 1" and 3/4" square stock aluminum from Home Depot, about $10 worth. The fixtures are Reef Optix III for DE MH bulbs and the large reflectors are the Diamond Lumenarc reflectors for SE MH bulbs. I'll be using 400 W 20 K Radiums with the PFO HQI ballasts and in the DE fixtures I'll be using 250 W 10 K AB's on the Ice Cap ballasts. This lighting fixture will hang above my tank and run back and forth on a light rail system to better distribute the light. Fixture is ~5 1/2 ft, tank is 8 ft.

Below is a shot of the reflection of the bulbs from the bottom glass of the tank. The two DE bulbs on the end are not on because I will have to wait until I shutdown my 110 SPS system to 'harvest' the IceCap ballasts for them. You can see the ten-zillion reflections from the Diamond Lumenarcs.

Dave..
I ordered my first LA3 in Feb of '04.... Came with glass and vent hole....

I ordered three more in 12 of '04 ... they were not offering the glass or fan vents...
Now they are again? Or did you not order it that way and it just came that way?

They just came bent to accept a pane of glass. The first ones were not. The vent kit was offered to me as a option but as mine were open air I didn't need 'em.

Glad I found this thread..

Does anyone have any pictures, or know of somone supplementing with actincs WITHOUT a canopy?

I tend to think that would be a pretty ugly setup. Light would be everywhere in the room unless you setup a aquaspacelight type hood with PCs in it.

I use 400w 20k bulbs & no actinics. Theres also people using 14k type bulbs without actinic. I run my bulbs 8 1/2 hrs. staggerd by 1/2 hour.

You can use actinic.........you just have to create a free hanging fixture box for everything to fit into.
