Luminarcs -- Excellent!

Just a quick question....
I'm contemplating whether I should purchase just the LA3 reflector for 90, or the whole package for 130.
I'm planning on using a PFO dual HQI ballast.
So which would be easier?
1) buying the package and then hooking it up to the ballast
or
2) buying just the reflector and then fitting the PFO socket assembly and cord into the reflector (since this plugs directly into the PFO ballast)
Any feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Need help deciding what to do about the lighting in my 125 gal tank. 24" deep, 24" wide, front to back. I'm running three 250W MH 14K Radians and two 48" VHO's.

Should I replace the MH's with two LAIII's or should I put in three Mini's?

Opinions??

Do yourself a favor and buy the reflectors w/mogul sockets. You can splice the wires w/ the PFO connectors, and seal them w/shrink wrap.

I'm in too. I love these reflectors. Excellent coverage for a 30" wide tank.

carereefer - that tank is ridiculous...such nice growth. What are the dimensions and are you satisfied with the coverage?

The reflectors are 19.5" x 19.5" and I would have to say about 10" deep, I never measured them tho. Coverage is outstanding. These 3 fixtures replaced 5 ROIII DE pendants. 30" is just too much width for a single row of pendants. I really do like the ROIII pendants and will use them over my frag tank when it gets up and running. Soon I hope, I need to do some pruning as you can tell.

Ok so I have a 30" wide by 21" deep (the rest is overflow and rear corners with no coral) area I want to light. I think the mini would fit better in my current canopy, but if it won't light the edges of my 30" well, then I'd hate to waste my money on it by not getting the big one. Any thoughts?

do you still need the vent holes if you have a fan blowing across the water surface?

if i'm hanging it about 8-10" do i still need a glass cover?

thanks guys

I wouldn't use the vent holes unless you planned on utilizing them with the dryer style duct work. I wouldn't use the glass with any configuration. Too much of a PAR loss IMO.

You would have to do some research on bulb/ballast combinations. With a magnetic ballast you should be ok. With electronic ballast I would think not. Check on Sanjay's site and try some different combinations. XM 20k on an HQI, PFO or SLS would probably be fine.

I'm planning on using five Lumenarc's with glass for my 400w 10K Ushio and HQI ballasts. I think keeping the reflectors clean, free of saltcreep, will offset having an open reflector full of saltcreep and film.

You have a good point, and i beleiive sanjay said its worth the loss of par from glass because its better off down the road from what ya said about the film and creep. I have mine suspended with no glass, and its about 12 inches off the water, and i dont get too much crud on them. I do clean them every 2-3 mos.

Has anyone mounted VHOs to the reflector or inside the reflector? I have a cube and am trying to figure out how to use VHOs with this reflector, since it is so darn tall!!

This is how we did ours;

The nice part is that the Luminarcs hang independent of the VHOs. The whole rack is on pulleys so I can raise and lower it when working on the tank or acclimating new bulbs.
