Luminarcs -- Excellent!

I bought mine from a second hand source, sticker on reflectors says Diamond. It is the same product. I've had to lower my photoperiod yet another hour down to 3.5. I have 3 of these reflectors over a standard 180 and actinics mounted below them.

Raise your lights or shorten your daytime cycle once you get these mounted. Your corals will bleach if you dont, at least mine did. Excellent product. Next upgrade is my closed loop, 3200gph from under the rock work.

Will they ever create LM3's for DE bulbs?

I currently have 3x ReefOptix III pendants with 250w PHOENIX 14K and love them but i would like more spread since my tank is 36" wide.

What do you guys think?

just in case you guys wanted to see something different

John,

Are you running a 250 on the 60 cube? Is it enough? Would you rather have a 400? I'm probably going to set up a 36x24x24 and was going to use one LA, but I'm debating the 250W/400W issue.
With the LA, I think 400 might be overkill but I'm trying to get some more opinions.

In fact, if anyone else wants to chime in, please do :D

I have a 30"x30"x24" cube which I just put a Luminarc on. Right now it is a 400W XM 10K, but I may go 14K because my VHOs had very little room to fit so I'm not sure they are doing much for the color. I figure I can go up in color temp and still have enough PAR to grow at a reasonable rate since I'm using the 400W lamp. I think if you went 250W, you would want to stay in the 10K region for growth purposes.

i didn't go 400 because of heat issues. Maybe at a later time i'll upgrade if i feel 250 isn't enough.

I was thinking 10000K Reeflux (although a little skeptical of CoralVue) or, if that fails, either 6500K Iwasakis with 4 36" VHO actinics or 10000K Ushio with 2 36" VHO.

Yeah, I'm having heat issues on my 20L with a 250W so I'm trying to be cognizant of heat issues on the 90. Also, the electric bill :D

Just build your canopy tall enough. I put my LA into what I had made already and I think the bottom of the reflector is only 2" off the surface of the water!! Like I said, amkes using the VHOs difficult.

If the LA3 is only 14.5x14.5, I'm not anticipating space problems in a 36x24 canopy, although I will have the LA3 before the canopy is built, just for CYA.

14.5x14.5 would be the dimensions of the "LA3 Compact" model vs. 19.5x19.5 for the standard LA3.

Doh! Thanks for catching that Scott.

Can anyone chime in on comparisons between the LA3 and the LA3 Mini?

heres mine, wish i would have got the air duct on it. I might still do that if i can add it on ...do you guys think i can put the air duct fan into these still??

Hey guys,

Great thread, but I still thought I would ask for input about my system.

My 150 is coming down in the next month for a new floor in the room, so its time to consider upgrades.

Currently I run 4 250 DE units, 2 10 k and 2 20 k, with an extra 20 k 250 that is only used sometimes. I am considering switching to 400 watters with luminarc reflectors. To do it, I would have to cut big holes in the canopy, but that isn't a big deal. What I am worried about is losing flexibility.

The multiple 250 DE's give me the ability to run them at different times during the day, which is great for electrical savings. Switching to 400's limits that.

Any thoughts in general?
Do you think 2 400 with luminarcs are enough to cover a 60x24x24 tank?
How high from the water do you suggest?
Do you think the switch is really worth it?

TIA

RR :D

Lefty I do not think going to 400's on a 150 is worth it. 250's can reach the bottom of a 24" deep tank. It's when you approach 30" that 400's become more attractive if you want high light animals on the bottom.

On the other hand Luminarcs are always a good move. You will get complete front to back coverage on a 24" tank. Two however will not fully cover the 60" length. They will come pretty darn close but looking at Sanjay's reflector analysis on the L3's you are getting about 24 sq inches of high light before it tapers off. So you would potentially have 10" that are lit no doubt but not with INTENSE light.

I would mount them so the bulb is 9-10 inches off the water.
