asmodeus - thanks. Wish I had more updates. But I'm going to order my bulkheads soon and maybe some rock

Anyone seen "short" bulkheads? I saw them somewhere. I want to use the shorties for the sump connections. because I'm going to have two bulkheads facing each other which could get quite long and I want a union in between them in case I have to take the two sumps apart. Shorties would save me some room

Custom aquatics sells them,

BTW thanks for considering MarcoRocks :)

Eric, can you explain how you drilled them specifically? It appears you had an inverted plastic bowl/cup over the area to hold the water in one spot. I like that. When I drilled a tank last year, I just had a hose trickling water over that area, using putty as a dam around the periphery. Your method seems better.

How long did it take to cut through the glass?

i just drilled my tanks and used some liquid nail to make a little dam. great idea lunch. I broke my 55, droped the drill ouch.

jnarowe - Savko doesn't have them I looked online. Aquaticeco might have them. Not sure if these are the right ones

Marco - Thanks man. Found themhere! The shoties are 1 1/4" long Oh I WILL Be ordering some rock from you. Not sure how much I need or could use. I have quite a big of LR already. Probably would need a 50lb box. Shoot me some photos of a typical box would you? What sizes are there usually?

Melev - You are supposed to use plumbers putty to make a dam for water. Well I didn't have any so I cut a tubberware to hold the water. I actually didn't even use it. I just poured some water and got it started and then when I could drill one handed I just kept pouring a slow stream of water from a pitcher. Took me mabye 2 min per hole it was VERY quick. The 40breeder was Oceanic so the glass was thicker which took me longer.

Eric - I was afraid I was going to break a tank. I was in luck it went great w/out any problems. I do need to drill one more hole though so wish me luck :D

Lunch,

Im going to have to do the same thing; connect two tanks in close quarters and keep them close. Have you thought about using Uniseals instead of bulkheads? Or you could turn the bulkheads backwards so that the side that is usually on the inside of the tank is actually on the outside.

I have my fingers crossed for you. You already know take your time at the end and your tank wont look like my 55. Good idea about the union between the tanks.

LB, I am not so sure about those short ones from Aquatic-Eco, although that is what I had pictured in my mind. The fact that they are label as "enexpensive" makes me a little gun-shy.

I would call SAVKO BTW, because a lot of what they sell is not on the site.

ReefWaters I really don't want to turn them backwards. I hate bulkheads already they scare me. I'd like to silicone all of them in but I think that could turn bad.

Eric - I hope mine looks good...but it will be months

jnarowe - I think the inexpensive ones are the economical sched 40's. I really don't want to use those but I don't want to redrill my tank for sched 80's

I'll try calling Savko and see

Thanks
Lunchbucket

I would bet that if you spent a little time on it, you might be able to find BHs with the exact dimensions that you need. There are more than one manufacturer of sched 80 BHs and so many sources to buy from.

jnarowe - I'll check around but I don't think that I can find any Sched 80's w/ a hole size of 2 3/8. I think most are 2 5/8 IIRC. If you ever se anything let me know

I'm not excited about having 6holes in the back of my tank. I mean flow w/ the sequence pump and the OM 4 way will be great but I HATE bulkheads. They make me paranoid. Also, I can't figure out if if I want to do T X S or T X T. T x T would allow me to unscrew the back side if I ever need to replace anything. Slip on the backside would mean I would have to cut it.

Lunchbucket

T x S is better. You only cut off what you must, and then glue on a coupling where you have to reattach.

Yeah I know....just guess I didn't want to :D

I hope to order them in the next week. Still not sure about the sched 40 or 80. Wonder if I can make a 2 5/8" jig out of wood and then use my router to make the holes bigger.

Anyone ever done this? Any oppinions? Options?

Thanks
Lunchbucket

Well I was just looking on Savko's site and might have found an option.

1.5" Sched 80's need 2 5/8" hole
1.25" Sched 80's need 2 3/8" hole.

If I go w/ the smaller size (1.25") I won't have to resize the holes and I can use Sched 80's. But will I really be limiting myself by downsizing .25"??

Lunchbucket

Ok, been looking at aquatic eco, MD, savko. The sched 80's that I found (1.25" for a 2 3/8" hole) are either all T x T or S x T where the slip is on the inside (flange side) adn the backside is thread no matter what. Anyone bought slip on the back side someplace?

Lunchbucket

As I wrote before, get on the phone with these suppliers and tell them exactly what you want. It may mean a little extra lead time, but usually theyu can source what you want.

I think the idea of using UniSeals to be a much better option between the sumps Eric. They'll take up no space at all, and don't leak. It doesn't get easier than that.
